  • New from New York

Just want to say hello and admit some excitement here because I know that I'll be back on track right away.

History: Lifetime of dietary ups and downs. A romance gone sour blindsided my best sense as I salved those wounds with carbs for three years. I suffered many pounds gained, but also a continually growing sense of weariness. No surprise to those of you who have been there/done that too many times.

Although I've lost ten pounds in one year by just cutting back (a little) on food, I knew that steering myself back to the Atkins' way of living would probably help me emotionally and with much more success in losing a little faster. Consequently, for the past week I've been getting my kitchen shelves and refrigerator set for the style of eating that suited me best in the past before soured romance went sour.

I hope to find a few kindred spirits here who may have gotten off the wagon only to find that other diet plans/life plans just don't work emotionally the way Dr. Atkins' does.

    Adios for now,
    A Siberian husky lover: ladysiberian

    Hi Ladysiberian ~

Welcome to the ADBB! You've come to a wonderful place. I am certain that you will find the kind of support and tons of kindred spirits here to help you along your journey. When are you starting Induction? Have you done Atkins before? If so, check out the Second Time Around Club. It may have what you are looking for.

I love New York ~ are you a city girl? I went to college in Ithaca and i really miss the beautiful trees and the drive between NJ/Ithaca. (I am a Jersey girl who has now ventured out West.)

    Welcome to the group!

        Re: New from New York

Thanks for the welcomes, and, yes, this is my second time around. I'll check out that board, DFM. The first time I was kept with Atkins for over a year. Lisa M: You look great!

Dragonflymoon: New York: Niagara Falls area--the watery-weeping part of the state. I know Ithaca, too, and those slate hills are beautiful. No city girl here!

New Jersey: Do you know the Cape May area?

Back to diet: I tried the FitDay site someone here mentioned and it is fabulous! I've been on Atkins for a week and one day now, but after keying in everything I ate yesterday, I realized that I was hitting an unreasonably high number of calories, even with Atkins. After looking over the dietary analysis on FitDay, I spotted several areas that I don't have to be quite so lavish with fat calories.

Coffee: I'd completely forgotten about the caffeine problem, so yesterday I bought a half pound of orange coffee beans mixed with a half pound of de-caf maple syrup coffee beans to wean myself off again. That first time around I did get off coffee after a few weeks.

I haven't lost anything yet in my first week, but, honestly, I think I was pushing the envelope calorically after seeing the FitDay analysis/totals. I'll be honest: one day I ate a full cup of ricotta! And that was just snacking. I'll get real here, really.

But the best part: I don't even care that I haven't started to lose weight yet because my emotions have leveled out, not that I was a basket case or anything like that, but I was just uneven--and it bothered me. By tossing out high carb foods and focusing on protein and fats, if too many at first, emotionally I'm level again, which is very important to me.

Thanks for writing here. I'll check out, as I wrote, the second time around forum.

Hi Ladysiberian ~ Sounds like you have a good attitude! That is cool. Have you re-read the book yet? I just picked it up again this week. Funny, i was sure i had a copy and i guess i never did! So i am not sure what i had read the first time around. Maybe an old copy or something because i don't remember this 2002 edition at all. I will say that it is helping me gain a sharper insight as to how this works. In the past, on Atkins, i was sneaking little things in (e.g. ketchup - how i miss it now!) and still calling myself on induction. There were other things too...

I love Niagara. I've been there a few times. It is so beautiful. I have been to Cape May a few times too, but i am from Northern Jersey so i don't know the South very well. I do miss the Jersey shore though!!!

                Re: New from New York

                Again, thanks for the responses.

I posted yesterday in the technical forum, but received no response. I'm confused about how to get the ticker in my signature. I've tried img in various forms of brackets and IMG capitalized; I do remember to put the /img in brackets after the ticker address. But so far all I get in the preview is the [img]urltickeraddress[/img] itself. I don't see the ticker image itself.

Can anyone walk me through this down in the technical forum? I've read all the advice posted there, but nothing worked.

Thanks for any help either here or there.

                LS

                  Welcome to the Board!

I'm so glad you decided to join us!

Oh, BTW, we just got a Siberian Husky mix and just love her so much. We think she is mixed with German Shepherd...but she has the best personality and is so good in the house. Her and our other dog get along so well!

Tell us about your babies if you get a chance.

P.S. Sorry I can't help you on the tickers. Images: I can do.

Welcome to the Board! I found this board a few weeks ago and it is an invalueable resource. It keeps me motivated. Would love to hear about your dogs as I am very fond of the Northern Breeds, I have an AKK and a Malamute.

As for the ticker in your signature this is where I got mine:
http://www.choosing2lose.com/ once you have created your ticker, copy the url listed inside the box below where it says bbCode you would copy from where it begins with [url=http: and copy every thing until you get to the end [/url], then paste it into your signature within the user control panel.

Save your signature and preview it, it will look just like the one you created on the website.

                      Re: New from New York

Siberians: We've had two Siberian huskies in our family--Nikita and now Laika. Nikita lived nearly fifteen years.

Laika: Now she's something else. No fear. Unfortunately we have to keep her on a leash, unlike Nikita, because Laika's breed-characteristic to run is way over the top.

What I love about Siberian huskies are the following traits:

Love, love, love for human beings
                      Speed
                      Minklike quality of the fur
                      Comic's sense of humor
High intelligence--quick learners till bored--then, forget it!
                      Exquisite beauty
Natural tendency to keep themselves immaculately groomed, except when shedding, which requires a lot of determination from owners--my Siberian can't stand to have even a small twig in her fur
Their lovely scent--light, sweet as the wind, non-'doggy'
                      Their fancy, prancy, lovely gait

And I guess the best part about Siberians is what is best about, I suppose, all dogs: Say, "Do you want to go for a walk?"--and she is the epitome of enthusiasm.

During the months that I just couldn't get the motivation to get my diet under control, my Siberian's enthusiasm for walking at least kept me outdoors and happily walking her. Otherwise, I would have won anybody's slug fest.

Dogs are great for pulling us back on track...steps in the right direction.

Thanks for the info about the signature, Lucy, and, Kat, if I didn't love huskies the way I do, a shepherd would be second on my list. You've got the best of two worlds!

                        How are you doing today?

                        Any pictures of your babies?

                        Here's some of ours:

We can see the German Shepherd in her (or so we think) by the saddle pattern on her coat.

Then we looked up a website on Husky colors and she looks like some of the Sable Huskies, which don't look like the typical Husky that you normally see. I think her face is smaller and pointier than a Husky or a German Shepherd, so we think she may have a third breed in her too.

She's got very light blue eyes (so light they almost look clear).
