Hello everyone! I'm new to the bulletin board, but old friends with the Atkins lifestyle. I started the lifestyle, AGAIN, this morning. This is my second attempt at changing my health and way of living. The last time I started Atkins was 2 years ago and I successfully lost approx. 50 lbs. However, I was blessed with a second child 17 months ago and of course went crazy with eating during my pregnancy. My thinking was, "this is my last pregnancy so I'm going to enjoy it and eat what I want!" HUGE MISTAKE!!!! Of course I'm paying for it now at 220lbs. I am a "sweetaholic", anything pastry related is my weekness. It doesn't help that I have a part-time business making pastries. I work full-time in the home taking care of my two children and also make pastry to bring in a little extra income. I know I can have my business and live the Atkins lifestyle since I succeed last time. But for some reason it seems more difficult this time. I decided to join this chat group because I believe I need the support of others who are going through the same challenges I am. I would also like to give support to those who are struggling with lifetime weight issues like I am. Are there any sweetaholics out there? Thanks for reading this and good luck with all of your journies.

    Re: new member

Hey there! I feel ya on the pregnancy and eating, when I was pregnant I thought "Now I have an excuse to be fat" and I ate whatever whenever it didn't matter, I had gotten to my highest weight of 272 and I swore I'd never get that high or even close to 300 but there I was. After my third baby was born I decided I needed to do something about my weight and I'm glad I started Atkin's and you will too! As far as the Pastry cravings you'll definately get past that, after a few days you won't even crave anything sugary. When I'm pouring my kids their bowls of lucky charms in the morning I don't even think twice, before I would have been eating it! But rest assured you'll definately get past it Great job on losing 50 pounds before, it's a lot of work I know, but if you could do it last time you can do it this time just keep focused and ask lots of questions

Just wanted to say hello and welcome! I have an 18 mo. old and also went crazy eating with the pregnancy. We are at similar weights so maybe we can exchange motivation! Good luck on your induction weeks. I know you can do it!

Welcome to the board - this place is full of people all ready to offer advice and support.

I, too, ate for two during my pregnancy; as if my unborn DS were fully grown in the prime of life eating like a horse and fit & trim...LOL

Having to make pastries may make things a little tricky, especially the first few days of induction and around your TOM. You will sometimes have cravings, and having them around will make it difficult not to cheat and throw you back out of ketosis. Could you make something else for your business, like homemade veggy soup or tuna salad, or is it required you make pastries?

Oh wow ~ i am a major sweet-aholic too! And when i was pregnant i went crazy on carbs & sugar too... i was crazy hungry all the time and used the pregnancy as an excuse to eat whatever i wanted. As a result, i gained 85 pounds while pregnant!

It sounds as though a lot of us were in the same boat! So you found the right place for support & empathy, that is for sure! Welcome to ADBB...

THANKS to LISA M, ATKID and MICHELLE for your latest response and support. I started atkins, again, yesterday and weighed myself this morning. Probably shouldn't weigh so soon, but needed to see if there was a positive change to keep myself going. Well, I'm down 2 lbs. from yesterday! I know it's only water weight but it makes me feel good to see the 2 lbs. gone and to know that I ate correctly. Do any of you remember doing the low fat diets in the past? I do, and I remember it taking A WEEK to lose 2 lbs. It was so discouraging. Atkins way living is a better way to go for me. It's hard to stay positive when results aren't seen within a few days, especially since I have 80lbs. to lose - 78 lbs. now!!! Thanks everyone!!!!!!!!!!!

                        Re: new member

You know, Sweet', one of the amazing things about Atkins is once I've gone through that food list and picked out things that I absolutely love and have denied myself, I get carried by a wave of yummy delight over and past the things that are no longer allowed, such as pastries.

The first week back on Atkins I didn't lose an ounce. For good reason: I was in macadamia nut-ricotta cheese heaven. Plus bacon and sausage and all that jazz. But I was happy, let me tell you! I didn't gain, but what I noticed was how my emotional level was so reasonable. That was the biggest plus.

Then somebody here recommended FitDay.com [Free!] where you can track your caloric and nutritional intake almost down to an art. That really opened my eyes to the fact that I was taking in WAY too many calories to lose, even though I wasn't gaining. I made a few adjustments (i.e., probably not a good idea to eat a whole jar of macadamias and a full cup of ricotta each day for three days running), set 1500 calories as my upper limit, but still with great foods, and bottom line has been:

No dastardly cravings for foods that work against this particular diet.

I tried a great salad yesterday for anybody who likes smoked oysters!

1 3 1/2 oz. can of smoked oysters, drained
                        1/2 chopped/cubed avocado
                        1/2 small chopped tomato
1 1/2 tablespoon red wine vinegar
                        2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese

Mix everything above and serve with whatever kind of salad greens you like.

That salad made me so happy that I'm on this particular type of diet!

Wish you luck with looking at those pastries with a cold (or at least neutral) eye!

How serendipitous that you and your husband like smoked oysters! Double the recipe above for two people, by the way--you'll need two full cans or tins of oysters. Let me know how you ended up liking it. I'll definitely try it again next week.
