  • discouagement from friends and family

    Hi friends,
I am 26 year old/f, height 5'5, CW 146Ibs.I desperatly wanted to do atkin's to loose 35Ibs which i recently gained (binge eaating in depression).Yesterday i went to get shopping of all meat, eggs, mayo and cheeses.I was very motivated to start it from today, though in past i had cheated several times on day 2 or 3 and never completed even 1 week.My friends are very discouarging, they keep on telling me that its a very unhealthy and unbalance diet and doesnt work on a long term basis. But i am so desperate to loose those ugly pounds quickly.I am very depress and completly avoiding social gatherings and parties and have a extreme fear of facing peoples who use to appreciate my figure and now what they will say.I feel like crying.I also read the book on atkins.I seriously wants to start.
My family is also not helpful, when i was eating eggs in the morning my dad ask me to throw egg yolks.
I am really inspired by success stories and wants to become a success story as well.Plz advice

    Musu,

The first two weeks of induction are very strict, but after that you can start adding back foods little at a time. I don't think there's a single natural, wholesome food that you can't add back eventually. The people that say Atkins isn't healthy just don't understand it. When you follow the book and make it a lifetime way of eating it's healthy, you get the nutrition you need and the weight stays off.

Please don't let your friends and family discourage you. Read that book, learn all you can and do what's best for you. You'll lose the weight you want AND be healthy.

    Oh yes... EAT YOUR VEGGIES!

1 Honey where are the veggies in your basket?
2 this is for you not your friends or family so just do not talk about it to them
      3 do I look unhealthy?
4 remember you are doing this to change bad habits not just to loose the weight if you do this for the bigger picture ..you will be so much healthier
5 egg yolks have tons of nutritional value if you toss them you are loosing out!

      good luck

Re: discouagement from friends and family

Welcome Musu. Congratulations on making the decision to change your life-style and get healthy. You've come to the right place. I totally understand your frustration at being overweight. I started this WOE at 285 pounds. I never went anywhere. I did my grocery shopping in the middle of the night, never participated in any activity outside my house and sometimes would go in my room if we had company to avoid being seen. I was so ashamed of myself.

The good news is that I found the ADBB. I gained the knowledge I needed here and met fantastic people who shared my desire to lose the weight. As for the people who tell you that Atkins is unhealthy - they do so out of ignorance of this weight loss plan. This plan works. My doctors are amazed and very happy with my health and numbers. I started out borderline diabetic and very unhealthy. My life-style has changed completely. I am not afraid to go anywhere or talk to anyone. I have gained self respect and energy to live life instead of watching others live.

You can do this. We are all here to help you. Read Dr. Atkins' New diet Revolution, edition 2002. Read the forums in the ADBB. Participate in the posts and challenges. Make friends and strive to make it happen. You are the one who has to live in your body and find peace with yourself. Don't let anyone stop you. YOU CAN DO IT!!!
        Starting Date 3/12/04 285/165/145 - F

Dedication gives wings to our dreams and keeps them in flight! In One Word...COMMITTMENT.

          Hi Musu,

It's hard when friends and family don't understand. But just think of how you'll prove them wrong when you're thinner- and healthier!

I have faced criticism when saying I am doing the Atkins way of eating. One of my coworkers said "I just don't agree with depriving myself of so many foods." I told her with Atkins you don't get deprived...in fact you eat lots of veggies. And later, you are allowed more carbs.

I think a misconception about Atkins is that a lot of people envision it as ONLY the first stage, the most restrictive. But actually, you gradually eat more carbs (to a certain point) as you lose more weight.

The hard part I think, is telling people that fats are not bad. Trans fat is bad, which is different from animal fat. It explains this in Dr.Atkin's book...if you haven't read it, you might want to pick it up. It'll give you lots of "ammo" for when anyone tries to discourage you.

Sending positive thoughts your way! Best wishes and keep up with the good work!

          Lisa

Why not print out a few Atkin's sample daily menus (there's some in the book and lots around these threads), and show them "Here's a typical menu for me now", "in 2 weeks this can be my menu" , "in a few months I can eat this on Atkins" - then ask them to show you what's so unhealthy about it. Better yet, do so while they are eating something unhealthy.
LOL They will have a tough time!
