  • Atkins first timer

    Hi
I just started on induction yesterday after years of being overweight. I am a recently turned 40 guy currently at 252 pounds, and according to my doctor I should be about 154 pounds - that is some weight to lose!

A couple of years ago I lost about 60 pounds on WeightWatchers, but most of it has gone back on

Last Monday I had a hospital appointment and the surgeon said he can't/won't do the op I need until I am a much more healthy weight so I have that as an incentive. He very strongly recommended Atkins which is why I'm here. He also said I should take a nutritional slpuement course too - quite expensive I reckon at £30 a month, but I guess I must follow his advice.

I know I'm only in day 2, but I feel a little wooly headed - like a hang-over. Is that normal?

There seems to be lots of friendly and helpful advice here so thanks in advance for any comments.

    Here's to it

    Hi Jon and welcome aboard!
Yep, that "hangover" is the Induction flu! Your body is detoxing. Hang in there, once you get through that you will feel MARVELOUS!!
My doctor advised me to do Atkins as well. Do you have the book? If not you really need to invest the few dollars(pounds?) and read through it and keep it handy!
Are you stocked up with induction friendly foods??
Hang in there, you will be amazed at what this way of eating will do for you!!!

      welcome to the adbb, jon!

certainly do hope you have the book, like barbie asked. there is a chapter in it about the supplements and nutrition.

measure!!! it's always good to get those numbers. we all know that sometimes the scale doesn't tell the changes your body is going to go through.

in the FAQ'S forum you can find a list of threads that might come in handy since you are new to atkins and to the board.

you'll want to get started with exercise also and a new 6 WEEK EXERCISE CHALLENGE begins on coming sunday. look for the 6 WEEK EXERCISE FORUM to sign up.

Welcome! You're very lucky to have a doctor that is PRO-ATKINS. I've had some surgeries in the past year and my doctors also are thrilled at my health since losing the weight.

The wooley-headed feeling is the way your body is fighting its addiction to the foods you've eliminated. After induction will go much easier for you if you break your habits now. The book is Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, edition 2002. It is how to do the program straight from Dr. Atkins. Read his book and come here to the ADBB for the support and knowledge from others who are making it happen. Make sure you take your measurements as well as weight. Soon you will see a big difference in your weight, inches and feel more energetic. Best wishes, and keep us posted!!!

Welcome, Jon. I'm in day 11, and it really does get better. In a few days, you'll be amazed at how much your cravings and appetite in general have decreased. Push through these next couple of day, and you'll feel so much better -- this is the hardest part. You can do it!!

Wow, what a friendly forum - thanks for the warm welcome.
I do have the book (got it the night I had been to the surgeon) and I also got The Illustrated Atkins New Diet Cookbook which gives loads of extra great recipes. My head feels clearer tonight. The hardest thing seems the huge amount of water I need to drink, but I see how important that is from the book.

Thanks so much for all your support - I know I will need it in the months ahead.

Welcome Jon. Hope that you are doing well! There are some great examples of men doing Atkins here on the board. Among them is Richt and Kent along with many more. It won't be long before you are noticing success, as well! Best wishes!

                        Welcome Jon!
You are so lucky to have found this particular board! There's all kinds of wonderful support here! We are a huge loving family of losers! (giggle!)

If you are STRICT with your induction you will not ever regret it! It's only two weeks and you'll really find out what kind of metabolism you have if you do, what they call a "clean induction!"

I don't think I had that pooped feeling until almost a week into induction but I do remember being so thirsty that drinking the water wasn't a problem. I might have been salting my meat too much.

Thanks again for all the advice and encouragement. I'm a week in and haven't been tempted to cheat, although I do miss fruit and sweet things. I don't miss caffeine which I thought I would, and I really haven't felt at all hungry. So far I've lost 8 lbs - is that what you would expect? I'll need some advice as to when to come off induction. I'm a teacher and off work for another 2 weeks so doing an extra week would be OK although it will be harder when I go back to school.
