  • Chris in Japan

Hello everyone. My name is Chris and I live in Japan. Originally from the US but have been living abroad for several years. As one might imagine, reading labels in a language such as Japanese can be next to impossible. However, I have learned the most important kanji such as sugar and carbohydrates. The Atkins diet is difficult to maintain in Japan. Japan is dominated by carbohydrates such as bread and rice. However, grilled meat such as yaki tori(on a skewer) and yaki niku (BBQ'd) abound, so that's good when you are looking to eat out.

Anyway, I just completed my first week on Atkins and have had great results.

Start weight: 316.8 lbs. on August 17th, 2006
Current weight: 301.4 lbs. on August 24th, 2006

That's a whopping 15.4 pounds in the 1st week... Of course I'm aware that this kind of progress cannot continue long term and I have prepared myself for slower progress in the future. It looks like I have low metabolic resistance. I am determined to stay on Induction for about 3 months.

Well, that's me. I wish everyone luck in their pursuit of a healthier body.

Hi Chris. What part of Japan are you in?

Be careful eating the Yaki-tori and Yaki-Niku, the sauce contains Mirin which is a sweet rice alcohol and it may also contain honey or a maple syrup type sweetener!

You should have easy access to Shirataki noodles though, those are great for a low carb life style!

Thanks for all the replies. Japan is a challenge. While there are a lot of fresh vegetables to be had, reading labels is a pain in the ____! There is a Costco nearby which helps out but it takes a while to get there by bus. Yes MotherofGizmo, one must be careful with sauces for yaki-niku. Most restaurants serve it up with an oil salt/pepper mix which, although not as good as the sauces, is ok. As for the yaki-tori, I stick with the non-sauced selections such as buta-bara. I recently found some salad dressings made by Kewpie that are made with sucralose (.2carbs/serving). Well, I'm trying to do my weigh-ins just once a week so I'll wait and see what my scale has to say for week 2... Thanks for the kind words.
