  • Hey Every1! Newbie Needs a lil help/advice!

    Hey Every1!

May I just say you are all doing so well, and such an inspiration!

I have decided start Atkins as of tomorrow!

I have bought the pack with three books in, meal planner with it etc.

I have been reading up on these last week or so. Also have supplements and 14 day starter kit for induction.

Im just a lil worried as I cant figure out the ratio thing every1 is talking about, and how you calculate your own?

Im gonna go read my books again in a min to try and find it! sorry if its in there!

And also, I bought quite a few products from the atkins site, which said they are suitable for induction.

But I have read a lot of posts saying that these foods are no good and can 'stall' your process?!!!

The last thing I want is that! I really want to stick to this, and believe if I see results that will obviously keep me going!

Thankyou in advance for any comments!!!

Re: Hey Every1! Newbie Needs a lil help/advice!

Hi Kelly, welcome to ADBB. While the Atkins site can be a good resource, you've found the best place on the web for Atkins advice. IMO second only to the book "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution" copyright 2002. Make sure your version is copyrighted in 2002.

Take the time to read the entire book. Keep it handy, you'll refer to it often!

As for the ratios, I believe someone plugged all the sample menus from the book into a website that keeps track of carbs, calories, percentages etc. called www.fitday.com and what they found was that the ratios of fat to carbohydrate to protein were 65%, 5%, 30%. You can get a free fitday account for yourself. It's a FANTASTIC food journaling tool to use. When you come up with your own menus, you'll want to attempt to hit those same ratios.

As you read DANDR, you'll see that it very rarely talks about using low carb shakes, bars, etc. Dr. Atkins said they were only acceptable in an emergency, and even then to be aware if they caused stalls. You don't need ANY of those products to do the Atkins plan. I think most low-carbers realized this, and didn't buy those expensive products that caused them to stall their weight loss efforts. I think that's why most of those products have mostly disappeared from store shelves. But, not to worry, you don't need them!!

Stick the the list of acceptable foods and ONLY those foods and you'll be set up for success. Come here and post often and we'll help you.

Hi Kelly. Welcome to the ADBB. Joy is right, get a fitday account and you'll be able to calculate your ratios properly. I have been on Atkins for 2+ years now and have never used any of the low-carb products. They can not only cause stalls, they also deter you from breaking the habits for the foods that caused you to gain weight. If you do a clean induction - you should eliminate the cravings and make it easier to change your life-style and eat healthier.

The ADBB is a great place for you to get knowledge to do the program and make friends who will share their weight loss success with you. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you don't understand something. You are not alone. Everyone here wants to see you succeed and reach your goal.

When I first began, I made two copies of the acceptable foods list. I carried one in my purse and hung one in the kitchen. That way you'll always be aware of the foods you should be eating. Be sure to take your measurements so you will see the inches melting away. Make sure you include exercise in your program and drink lots of water. Exercise not only burns calories, it helps you keep a positive mental attitude.

We're very happy to have you join us. Best wishes and can't wait to read about your success soon!

          Hey Just an update!

Had Chicken with lettuce and mayo.

Still drinking a lot of water...

Just entering details into fitday, so far today_
          Total Carbohydrateg12.44------Dietary Fiberg1.25

Am I right in thinking that you deduct total carb - fibre?

So total net carbs being 11.9 ? Please help lol...

Re: Hey Every1! Newbie Needs a lil help/advice!

Yep, subtract fiber from the total for your net. You need to stay below 20 net.

Keep in mind that "salad" is anything from the "salad vegetables" list. It does not necessarily mean lettuce. Lettuce doesn't have a lot of nutrients or fiber. There are lots of other veggies on that list that will satisfy you more, give you more nutrients and fiber and just a LOT more flavor, texture and satisfaction. I'm happy to see you including vegetables in all 3 of your meals in a day. That's what we're supposed to do. Good job!

I can't weight to read your 'It's day 15 and yippee I lost xx pounds' post!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
