  • Hello from Ireland!

    Hello everyone!

I've been lurking for a few days so thought it might be time to say 'hi'. I've never tried Atkins before, always heard how it was 'unhealthy', but a friend recently loaned me her Atkins book and I was amazed at how much sense it made. The day after I started reading it, I started my Induction. I'm currently on Day 4.

I have always had a problem with my weight, tried every 'diet' under the sun, then 10 years ago I tried a low carb/high protein diet (Slimming World) which worked wonders for me and I lost 84lbs in 9 months. I managed to maintain my weight for about 5 years - my downfall was giving up smoking, when I put back even more weight!

So, I know low carbs work for me and I'm really excited about the Atkins way of eating, I'm only on Day 4 of my Induction but it has been so much easier than I expected - the real boost was finding this website and seeing all your inspirational photos. Last night I asked my hubby to take some pics of me - I nearly died when I saw the ones taken of my backside!!! I just didn't realise how gross I looked! When I have lost some weight I will post them up in the pictures section - until then, I am far too ashamed to inflict them on an unsuspecing public!

Another reason for me needing to lose weight is my health - I've recently been diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetic, just diet controlled at the moment, but I found I was having such a difficult time keeping my blood sugar low, even when not eating sweet things - I never realised (and was never told) carbs could have an effect on it. I have noticed a drop even over the last few days and have been busy quoting from my Atkins book to my mum who is also Type 2 Diabetic - she's also noticed a slight drop since watching her carbs too.

    Nice to meet you all,
    Jackie.

      Hi and welcome.
What the stupid diet doctors never admit is that Atkins is the perfect diet for diabetics. Just look at it logically: diabetics have a problem with carbohydrates - correct? Yes, well nobody disagrees with that. So they should not eat sugar, everyone agrees there too. But Atkins says, why stop there? Refined sugar isn't the only thing that raised blood sugar - potatoes, refined flour, fruit juices, parsnips all do that too, so why give your body a hard time? Do without them, and you won't need as much (or any) insulin.

      Good luck

Welcome and best of luck to you, Jackie. Sounds like you are approaching this right -- and for the right reasons. Reading the book is the first step -- so working on that while proceeding with induction is a great start. Keep it up, and keep us posted!

By the way, I too, was motified, when I saw my before photos (I'm about the same size you are). That reminds me I should have had a "from behind" shot taken. (But the ones from the front and side were scary enough!) Am looking forward to being able to post some "progress" shots soon!

            Thanks for the kind welcome!

I'ts the start of the second week of my induction today and I was over the moon to step on the scales this morning and find I'd lost a total of 9lbs in my first week - such a boost and encouragement to keep me going, although it hasn't been anywhere as difficult as I was expecting it to be. I can't wait for next week's weigh in now!

                Re: Hello from Ireland!

Hi Jackie. Welcome to the family. I weighed a bit more than you when I first started. It took me a while to post my photos, but as I got to know people here and learned what a big support system they provide, I gave in and posted. I'm glad I did now as it is a constant reminder to me not to go back, keep going forward.

Glad you read the book, it will help you to understand the program. Take your measurements as well as recording your weight, that will really amaze you to see your body shrinking. There are lots of fourms that will interest you in the ADBB. Keep active by posting and making friends. Knowing there are people who care and are sharing their experiences too keeps you moving in the right direction.

Can't wait to read about your success as you make it happen.

Jackie, Becky couldn't be more right... the connections you make here are INCREDIBLE support, motivation and incentive. As you move along, you develop this feeling that you not only don't want to let yourself down, but also your fellow ADBBers who have shown a personal interest in your progress.

Congratulations on 9 lbs. -- good for you!! That's terrific. And, I'm so glad to hear it hasn't been terribly difficult. That's what continues to amaze me... my lack of hunger and how that enables me to stick with it.

Best of luck in week two. Keep us posted!

I'm glad you found us and are doing so well on the plan.

I saw that you have an Irish Wolfhound. I've always thought these dogs were beautiful from all the pictures I've seen of them growing up. We have several dog lovers on the board and here's a couple links if you would like to post a picture of your doggie: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26629
