  • Aloha - Again

    Hi there -

I'm Ellie in Hawaii and I'm back on the board and about to attack Atkins for a second time. I originally was on in Summer - Fall 2003 and was doing quite well when things in my life went haywire - lost my job (quit actually - jerk of a boss) house was robbed (by someone we knew - housesitter let her 'friends' stay there while we were on the mainland - cleared us out of about $14K of stuff over a two week period at Christmas/New Years) and we were working hard on trying to concieve a second child.

Fast forward to 2006. One big move, two job changes for me (and starting a home business with Usborne Books), two job changes for my husband and TWO NEW CHILDREN to pack a lot more than two pounds onto me. Its time to get back on track.

The newest baby is only 12 weeks old today and as I'm breastfeeding I need to figure out where/how I should start since I cannot head straight back into induction - I do not want to risk my milk supply. I'm starting back up on Tuesday 10/10 - Why Tuesday - because my oldest daughter will be back at school after her fall break this week and Columbus day break on Monday and it'll be me and the two little ones again - just an easier start time frame.

It is really nice to see a lot of familiar names (Bren, Brooke, 2Big etc.) from 3 years ago still posting on the board - long term success stories of folks who were there is wonderful to see.

If anyone has any suggestions / experience on doing all of this again while breastfeeding I'm all ears. (I will post over on the pregnant/nursing thread as well).

PS - Its also great to see how much this board has grown!

Congratulations on the new children and your new business. I lived on Oahu for 3 1/2 years, just loved it. We have a forum on pregnancy and nursing which will answer a lot of your questions, its under the Health section. I look forward to hearing more about you! Best wishes!!

Ellie, welcome back. Glad you found us again. Reread DANDR section about breastfeeding Moms as he wants you to do Maintenance. I really believe you can still lose weight by portion control, exercising and drinking water.

          Re: Aloha - Again

Thanks for the welcome back. I know about the doing maintenance part but as I never got to that point I'm not sure what 'my' carb level should be for maintenance - I was eating between 50-60 when I dropped but I was in OWL at the time. I do need to cut out a lot of them as my whole family has gotten into a trap of eating carbs again too much (we live in Hawaii where rice is served with pretty much every meal and we had done really well getting away from that but it creeps back) and then the finances have been tight - we all know that pasta is cheap... etc.

As for the water - I'm currently drinking about 150 oz. of water a day - I live in a very dehydrating place and nursing so I'm pretty much always drinking water - I've dropped nearly 20 lbs since baby number 3 was born on 7/14 and have recenlty started excercise again (with doctors blessing and I'm premitted to diet in moderation) so that's helping.

Where I really need some more self control is when I do my Usborne Book parties at people's house and they have snacks - I'm usually running there to set up during dinner time and then snack the evening on what the hostess has, sell my books and then don't eat a real dinner.

I did visit the pregnancy/nursing board and there was some interesting info there. Dieting while nursing is a tough prospect because it has to be done even more delicately than regluar dieting - but it can be done.

Thanks again and you'll be seeing more (and hopefully less) of me around.
          Aloha

            Hi Ellie, welcome back!

It looks as if you are all geared up ready to go - well done!

As for the 'eating while selling in someone else's home' thing, maybe you can take your own 'snack food' to make sure you will be able to eat 'legal'.

If you are at maintenance levels then virtually anything except white rice/flour and sugar are allowed, so some whole grains and the lower GI fruits/veg/dairy/nuts etc should give you plenty of variety!

And no hostess will be offended I am sure if you tell them you are on a special eating regime which you need to stick to for the sake of your health.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Check out our Low Carb Recipes website and add to it!!

welcome back. Cong4rats on the new little ones. Brook was breast feeding when she started and her doc told her as soon as she was not the childs primary source of food she could start with induction and keep nusering.

talk with your docs about it. ketones do not harm babies as some hysterical folk will tell you and are actually the primary building blocks of neonatal brain tissues
