    Re: Hello!

    Good morning!

So, it's day 7 now. Can't believe I'm nearly half way through the first 2 weeks. So far, it's been relatively smooth. First few days, I had some pretty bad withdrawals. They weren't pleasant, but I took them as part of the process, and they didn't dent my resolve; just made me uncomfortable.

Until late last night, I hadn't had any sugar cravings to speak of. When my wife decided to have a low carb Atkins bar (too many carbs for me during induction), it set off some unexpected longings. I'd used up my carbs for the day, and tried a couple of pork rinds. Wasn't really in the mood for pork rinds though, so I mostly gutted it out. Just before bed, I remembered someone telling me cheese was good for cravings, so I had like a half ounce of asiago. That seemed to help.

This morning's a nice day. The holidays and a cold that I picked up in the middle of them, had prevented me from getting too much exercise over the past couple weeks. Got out before dinner last night, and played a couple hours of doubles (tennis). I'm only a little stiff this morning, and will probably try to get out this afternoon to hit with my wife for an hour or so.

Scale finally stopped its rapid descent this morning; guess I'm done with the water loss. I'm going to put it away and only take it out weekly from this point forward I think. Well, maybe every 3 of 4 days.

I actually never owned a scale until the night before I started Atkins. Weighing myself was always bad news... or if it wasn't bad, it was never great news, so I avoided scales like the plague. It's nice to have some confidence in the approach I'm taking, so that I'm okay with measuring results. I know that there will be good weeks and stagnant weeks over time, but I'm feeling good that I'm headed in the right direction, and that I won't have many truly bad scale experiences, so long as I stick to the plan.

Anyhow, enough rambling for the moment.

    Cheers,

You should check out the no weight challenge. I think they are down to only 2 or 3 people. Good Luck.

        Thanks for the suggestion Tracie,

Having been so averse to scales for so many years, I'm not yet concerned that I'm addicted to them, so I may hold off on that one for a while. But, your suggestion prompted me to search around, and I found the "Challenges" forum. While I'm currently finding my 20 carb per day limit enough of a challenge, I'm thinking that after I've successfully navigated induction, I may just jump in to one of those challenges. I've always exercised fairly regularly, but maybe a challenge that pushes me to take it up a notch.

        Cheers,

Your are doing fantastic! Good for you for sticking to your guns last night even though you really wanted something. I know how hard that can be at times. Believe me, it will get easier. I am a carb/sugar addict and Atkins is my rehab!! LOL! I hardly ever even think of sugary stuff now! You are going to get there too!

Great job on the exercise too!

              Re: Hello!

Drats! Misread my carb counter, and confused "freeze dried" leeks for what I was actually putting in my omelette, which was raw leeks. A 4.5 gram mistake. Now I'm half-way through my carb quota for the day.

Hi there Obob and welcome to ADBB! Sounds like you've got it together. Since you like to cook, once you get through your first two weeks, go get George Stella's low carb cookbooks. There is some great stuff in there. He's a chef, and he did Atkins. A lot of the recipes are for the ongoing weight loss phase, but boy are they good.

Also check out Linda's Low Carb site for induction friendly recipes that are delicious.

                  Re: Hello!

Thanks for the recipe pointer Joy. I think I'm going to like cooking on Atkins.

Just a quick post to note progress. Decided to ease up on the weighing to every 2 days instead of every day. Just wanted to not be thinking about it quite as much as I was (although I'm sure it's natural during induction to devote a lot of mental energy to this).

Went to bed feeling kind of big, and was starting to worry about this morning's weigh-in, imagining that I'd be the same (which would have been acceptable) or possibly heavier. I guess I just feel like with all this fat, meat and eggs, how could I continue losing...

... but alas, another 2 days, another 3 pounds! What a great way to wake up.

                  Cheers,

Seriously. I felt like a "Doubting Thomas" last night. So nice to have my faith restored in the morning.

                        Re: Hello!

Congratulations! It is amazing we can eat so well and have the weight fall right off of us, isn't it? It doesn't always work that way with the scale though...be prepared because there WILL eventually be days of no loss and days of weight GAIN. But...always keep in mind that it takes an excess of 3500 calories to gain a pound of fat.

I am a daily scale watcher...but I don't freak when the scale doesn't say what I want it to. And if I do get upset about it, I come here and someone will talk rationally to me about it. LOL

Hi asbeemer, and welcome! This place has been extremely helpful to me in the early going...

To this point, since it doesn't appear to be impacting my weight loss, I'm happy enough to stick to the 1 cup of imported Irish tea. While I don't feel I have a caffeine problem (one cup a day is well below what is generally considered problem usage or abuse), I do love both the taste AND the pick-me-up that it gives me at the beginning of the day. If I can keep that, and still lose weight at a decent pace, I'll stick with it.

When I go for decafinated tea, I generally use chamomile, although I haven't had any since starting on Atkins. Green tea's good, and I always have drunk it at Japanese restaurants. I've never tried it with cream.

I'm still drinking the tea that I do drink black (always had it with milk before Atkins). I just prefer it black to with heavy cream, as I don't like the fat in my tea that comes from the cream (and floats on the surface).

                            Cheers,

                            OBob (17 pounds lighter)
