  • NEW & EXCITED!

Hello ladies and gents! - My girlfriend and I are on day TWO! - She's four pounds lighter already! - I forgot to weigh in this a.m. - We promised to weight each morning and fight the urge to weigh ourselves three times a day! She (Valerie) asked me to post a question to you all. - "Is it possible to intake too FEW carbs daily?" - Is there a health risk associated with VERY low daily carb intake? - Hope to hear from you all soon.

    Hi Charley

Welcome to ADBB! Congratulations to Valerie on her 4lbs loss but I'd advise not to weigh too often as weight can fluctuate throughout and you may find yourselves disappointed if you weigh and find the scales have stuck or even gone up a pound or two as can happen!
I began by weighing myself every 2 days until I read here about not weighing too often...so I've stopped for the moment...tomorrow is day 8 for me so I may weigh myself then and then again next Monday when induction finishes and I hopefully begin the OWL phase!

Good luck to you both...look forward to reading about your progress!

        Re: NEW & EXCITED!

Hi Charley (and Valerie). Welcome to the board. You've come to a good place for low carb info and friendly advice.

Re "too few carbs"... well most people, if they are eating correctly, eat between around 12 -20 carbs a day on induction. You need to eat your three cups of veggies (2 x salad and 1 x other acceptable veggies) and most of your carbs come from these. Then there are the carbs from eggs, cheese etc.

The important thing is to eat until you are satisfied, not full to bursting. If you do that, and keep within the 20 g carbs/day you'll be fine. If you eat too little, your body will go into starvation mode and your metabolism will slow down, so you have to get that happy medium. No way should you go hungry on Atkins.

I'd advise you to take your measurements at the beginning, as often you can lose inches but not pounds (particularly if you increase your exercise a lot). The tape measure is a far better indication of actual loss than the scales. I didn't do this at the start, and regretted a lot, later on.

Recipe for success: Keep to within 20 g carbs in induction; drink masses of water; exercise; read DANDR (2002 edition); take supplements without iron.

        Happy Atkineering!

Thank you all for your wise advise. We will weigh-in twice monthly and stick to those veggies and water. We have the tape measure and forgot all about it until you mentioned it here so before days end we'll have our measurements! - Thanks again.

                Re: NEW & EXCITED!

Hey Valsgal! I've been reading the posts/questions here. Yes, you can eat too little calories per day. This will put your body in starvation mode and you will not lose weight because your body holds the weight, wondering where the next meal will come from.

Someone else said 1200 calories per day. I believe that to be too little as well.

                This site: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/
will help you understand exactly how many calories per day your body needs to lose, as well as to maintain. Also, with limited carbs, you can literally eat more calories than you normally would!

                Hope that helps!

                      Re: NEW & EXCITED!

Hello! Welcome! So awesome to have a buddy to do this with.

Just a couple things stood out when I read your original post, you know...you'll see a lot of people talking about being a slave to their scales...that can sometimes be frustrating.... pick on day of the week, maybe Wednesday, and say every Wednesday you'll get up out bed and weigh yourself. Put the scale out of site, it's easier said than done sometimes, but the results are so much more worth it.

now about the too few carbs, well, some days you'll be closer to 20 than others. It all depends on your lifestyle and how active you are, they are correct, most of your carbs at this point should be coming from veggies, if you're hungry, eat, if not, don't. It's really that simple. Now of course if you were trying to survive everyday on 0 carbs or 5 carbs, that could eventually results in some health issues. But some days you will need those extra carbs that take you to 20 and other days you won't. I hope that is somewhat helpful.

Good luck and keep us posted!
