  • New to Board, Old to Aktins, still unanswered questions...

    Hi Everyone

I'm finding it difficult to navigate on this Bulletin Board ::::

Anyways.... can i just go to my regular supermarket and buy any no-sugar, no-carb bacon available?

Or do I have to go to a specialty store and buy 'nitrate-free' bacon?

Long story, I think I need to post this info on a different section of this board/forum.... but i started Atkins Jan 1, 1999 at 233#.... i lost over 100 lbs, getting down to 128#. It took me 2 yrs. After a car accident & divorce, i got up to 178#. Now I am down to 165#, with a goal of 139#.

I want to enjoy bacon but if it is 'taboo', I don't want to ruin things. I read then, and just re-read Dr Atkins book (from the year 1999), and i could NOT find ANYTHING in there about no nitrates.

    Thanks for your help,
    -Dianna

Hi DiannaLynn and welcome back to the Atkins way of eating! You've given yourself a great present by recommitting to weight loss and better health.

Congrats on your losses, from your original weight, so far. Hang in there, keep focused on your goal and you'll get there.

Re the nitrates... can't answer you on that I'm afraid. I live in Italy so don't know where you'd get nitrate free bacon in the States. Over here, I can't get it at all, so I do just eat the normal (sugar free) bacon. I don't eat it too much though. I'm sure someone will be along to answer your question soon.

Btw... if you can get hold of a copy of DANDR 2002 edition it would be good. That's the version this board goes by as it was the last one that Dr A wrote in its entirety. In it Dr A advises against nitrates in bacon and cold cuts etc.

    Happy Atkineering!

Hi Dianna um, I've found a brand here in the midwest called Plimrose, it's low sodium, no sugar added or cured. But I know the health food stores sell Nitrate free bacon as well. Just beware....it doesn't last long at all, just a few days, your best bet is to divide it up into servings and refreeze it. You can still have bacon, just in moderation is I believe the answer. Nitrate Free is the best way to go though! Good Luck!

Hi Dianna! Welcome to the board. I'm sure there's places online that you can order the bacon you want. Personally, I always ate the regular stuff and was never kicked out of ketosis from it. Good luck to you on your weight loss journey.
