  • Introducing myself to the board

    Hello everyone,

you can call me em23 for short. im 5"6 and currently 196 pounds. when i started atkins, i was at 240, two years ago. i was able to bring it down to 188 but i couldnt break that so i quit. my weight ballooned to 220 when i decided to start over again. its been a month now and im at 196. during the first two weeks of induction i went from 220 to 207 so im preety happy with my results. my goal is 160 so im about 36 lbs to go. so far i havent lost anything in two weeks, but this time around im not going to drop out of it and i have decided to look for a place where i can read about other people who are in the same situation i am.

i found this board through youtube and now i feel like some puzzling questions can be answered about recipes, allowable foods and support. hopefully i can break through this barrier and finally get to where i used to be. so thanks in advance!!!

Hi there Em23 and welcome to the board. So glad you found us through youtube. Maybe you were looking at Kent's awesome Atkins videos... and if not they're well worth a look. He has them under the name of Bowolf.

Re your concerns at your slight blip (two weeks is slight) in weight loss... here's a link to an interesting piece by Moochiecat; I know you're not such a newbie, but what she has to say is valid throughout the diet, nut just in induction:
          http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=5090

You might also like to post a couple of menus in the "review your menu" forum, for someone's opinion. Often, by tweaking just a little thing, you can jump start the loss again.

Ask any questions you have; we're here for ya!
          Happy losing!

Re: Introducing myself to the board

thanks again scooter, and everyone else. reading some threads here is shedding light on what is stopping me.

when i started induction, i used splenda on my green iced tea, HOWEVER, i didnt measure or limit how much splenda i put on a pitcher or jar. i lost weight and everything was fine.

the foods im addicted to are white rice, potatoes, pastas, and sugar (as a kid i was a koolaid addict) since i was born in south america, the food there is laden with rice and starches, and that is how i was brought up in america. add the massive amounts of sugar and the fact that my dad has a portly demeanor to him and now i see why i gained so much weight.

in my past attempts at atkins, when i hit the 196 wall, as i call it, i would quit after 3 weeks and go back to my old habits. since im not going to quit this time, what im going to to is simply restart my induction without splenda or any sweetner. most of my meals since i started are basically composed of salads, miso soup, tofu and chicken. another mistake i made was having turkey patties during induction, which i now think isnt on the acceptable foods for phase one.

psychologically, when i would hit a wall, my low self esteem would kick in and start driving me back to my old habits. Living in Los Angeles is tough because everyone here is into themselves and how they look. dating is even worse, i went on a date once where the minute the lady saw me, her eyes rolled up, even to a guy it can be devastating. i was married but my wife died of cancer two years ago and having to start all over again is painful. the motivating factor in my quest to drop these 35 lbs is to feel better about myself and hopefully find that special someone to start a new family with. also, being in better shape helps at job interview and social events here. no matter how much we should accept each other for who we are and what we look like, human behavior still drives people to be attracted to the attractive.

having just read about sweetners in the induction phase im going to adjust my diet to eliminate splenda for a couple of weeks, i think it will work

being used to weighing in at 240 lbs for years, i was very happy even if i wasnt at my target weight. this is me after the removal 45 lbs of comfort food!

Hey em23. Welcome to the board. We (of course) are awesome. I have always had a tendency to do the same thing as you - plateau and immediately jump off the wagon. This time I'm sticking around for good... and have gotten to a weight I haven't been at in ummm... about 5 years? I hit the wall for like, 6-8 weeks, and then switched my workout routine and started moving again. Have you joined challenges yet?? You should. Oh yeah, and a journal in the journal chats 'cause that's where all us cool people hang out.

hi EM.....i can totally relate to your thoughts on the LA scene. i am from the east coast where people are very...should i say...genteel. i guess one of the reasons i feel so out of place here (southern ca) is that the focus is pretty plastic. i have been told over and over how attractive i am but... i am not a hollywood starlet! it takes lots of self esteem and self love to be happy with who we are. you are a real handsome fella...i admire your goals. just be sure to do it for YOURSELF and no one else.....coming from someone who just got engaged to my wonderful, handsome, sweet and terrific fiance.....coming off the 4 year dating-go-round here in southern ca...i know what it is like to jump back in to that pool (mine after an 11 year marriage and a shocking divorce!)

i guess i am a little off the topic of weight loss but.......bottom line is this...LOVE YOURSELF. that perfect woman will love you for your good looks, great health AND super person that you are!

Re: Introducing myself to the board

thank you for your kind words. this board is frickin awesome!

of course you can read the atkins book, which i did, but there is nothing in there about experiences and everyday effects on the people who are going through what im going through.

my late wife was from atlanta and its a whole different ball game over there, i didnt feel like my socks had to match (even though they do!)

congratulations on your upcoming wedding!!! having been in a loving marriage myself, IT IS WORTH THE EFFORT TO HAVE SOMEONE TO LOVE AT YOUR SIDE!

just remember to use splenda instead of sugar on the CAKE!!!!
