  • Glad to be Here!

I saw the news, borrowed the book, and started induction yesterday. And then I found this place! What wonderful successes some of you have had; it's inspiring, and I just know having a place like this to come to will help me so much.

I'm Mary, just turned 39, and an at-home mom soon to be student. My family moved to Iowa from New Orleans last year, and the stress did bad thing to my weight and health in general. I've never been a small girl but I've decided now that I'm going to be!

I'm 5'11'', and I started at 226 yesterday. After looking at all the excellent links here for determining goal weight, I decided to work toward a goal of 165. I'm going to work out a set of short-term goals as I have time today.

    Wish me luck!

    Re: Glad to be Here!

    Good Morning Mary,

My name is Scooter, it's a great day and it's wonderful to have you with us. I'm so proud of you for making that first big step and deciding to live this way of life. I would like for you know that it is soooo easy. It might take a few days or even a week or so, but you absolutely get addicted to the energy you gain from living the lo-carb lifestyle! I'd love to give you a couple links....

first is www.fitday.com it's a FREE pc program, you sign in and creat a new account, it comes with a calendar, you enter everything (down to the last crumb of cheese) that you eat, and you can watch your carb intake, calorie intake, protein, you can enter you current weight, and your goal weight, and watch that little line graph move from 226 down to 160 where you're looking to be!! That part is really fun, especially after a few months.....

secondly www.tickerfactory.com you'll see alot of folks with little graphs at the bottom of their posts, little icons showing the starting weight and ending weight and kind of tracks progress for everyone to see.

the other is http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/index.html this site has lots of ideas, menus, recipes, yummmmmmy recipes! Make sure though that you use the recipes marked with (*) as though are acceptable for induction.

I hope that those are some helpful tools for you. It is wonderful to meet you. Please feel free to ask questions, there are a great number of kind, helpful folks here to help you along the way. You will be amazed at how easy this is going to be. The hard decision is deciding to do something about the wieght, the rest is..........hsitory!

Best of luck, be sure to visit all the different forums, read the sticky's they hold all sorts of helpful info, and drink lots of water, water, water!

    Thank you for introducing yourself!
    Scooter

First question: WHY DID IT TAKE ME SO LONG TO GET TO ATKINS??? (sorry for yelling... )

I got on at Fitday.com like Scooter suggested, and I just looked at my first full day's accounting. Only 1665 calories?! How...wha...huh? I've been on 1800 calorie carb plans that had me wanting to eat my arms in hunger, but today I ate like a queen on rotisserie chicken with mayo (lip-smacking!) and salad with creamy dressing and a double helping of southwestern taco soup (so delish!) and I still have room for a splenda packet for my nightly tea!! I am replete, I exercised, I didn't have that afternoon slump, I'm happy and I'm looking forward to tomorrow! This is amazing!! (It's certainly making me abuse the exclamation mark. )

Your enthusiasm is contagious mary! Welcome to ADBB. This place is wonderful for providing support. The Atkins WOL has changed my life...truly. It is wonderful that we get to eat so man wonderful tasting and satisfying foods. AND if you do the plan the way Dr. Atkins said to do it (not what the media says it is...or you're daughter-in-law's aunt's mechanic says it is) then you get pretty much EVERY food back except for sugar and refined white flour (which I'm convinced are toxic). Very healthy, LOTS of variety.

I have one easy pass to start with: I can't eat wheat or any of it's cousins. So I never even have to worry later about craving bread or pasta or cookies. The smallest crumb sends me into asthmatic fits. Isn't that lucky?! I may yearn for cajun jambalaya, but I think I'll be able to make do with smothered okra and tomatoes, and stewed greens with ham. (Dang. Now I need to go buy some greens and ham for lunch tomorrow. )

And as for sugar, I'm now convinced too, our bodies were never meant to handle the huge quantities the food industry wants us to eat.

Mmmmmmmm now I'm drooling. You know, cauliflower makes a great substitute for rice anyway. Steam cauliflower and when it's cooked, shred it with a fork until it's the consistency of rice. I add butter and some Goya Sazon for yellow rice...you could do saffron too. Then you have yellow rice.

There's a recipe I've got somewhere too for making Dirty Rice using that bagged brocco-slaw. My DH loves that stuff.
