Hi all,
My name is Swan and I'm no stranger to Atkins. Ten years ago I wanted to lose 25 lbs. I did AD the "bad" way: i.e. meals consisted of lots of eggs and bacon, salami logs and hunks of cheese with "milkshakes" made of diet chocolate soda and heavy cream. Amazingly, I lost weight by eating this way but felt terrible.
Two months ago I spent $400 on a Jenny Craig membership. Last summer I did the 6 week diet and actually lost 20 lbs. However, that food gets old after awhile. This time I was assigned a "Jenny counselor" who is very, very overweight and depressed. I realized that I have to find something that works for me, that I can stick to.
Diabetes runs on both sides of the family, so a low carb approach makes sense.
Last week I heard a report on NPR, discussing the new study results of women and AD. The nutrition dude said that "every diet message gets oversimplified". In other words there are low-fat dieters who convince themselves that they can eat anything, in any amount, as long as it's "low fat." Unfortunately the low carb message got pretty scrambled. I've known some morbidly obese people who thought Atkins was an excuse to eat lots of unhealthy foods almost exclusively (a former colleague who kept a 10 lb salami log and 5lb block of cheese at her desk so she could "nibble.")
I now realize that the way to do this is through lean proteins, veggies and healthy fats.
I moved to the east coast 2.5 years ago and, as an emo-eater, have taken out my frustration and anger by eating too much. Somehow I've ballooned up to 235, and am an 18W size.
My best size is 12. I want to get there. I know I can with the support of this community.
Gracias! Swan
