Hello all! I just joined here, after buying the Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution book, and would like to say this looks like an extremely resourceful forum!
I took a peek at the before and after pics and was very impressed, to say the least.

I, too, have heard some opinions from both sides, concerning Dr. Atkins diet, and decided it was time I found out for myself and see what happens.

I was always thin growing up, always out and about, getting plenty of excercise, and no worries about my shape or health. I never got teased about being fat, but was asked plenty, if I was a bodybuilder. lol I think the muscle tone was a gift from the Greek (Father) side of my family, but I have let that muscle fade away over the years, covered by fat and more fat.

Well, of course, as the years went by, I started staying in more and more, and just eating whatever I felt like, and it's gone on for a while and the weight has been steadily piling on, up to now, 255 lbs. I want to remove all the mirrors from the house! lol

It's too bad I've waited til now, but it's never too late, and I know I can have the old me back, where I can do alot of the things I used to do, that the weight is keeping me from, such as biking, canoeing, seeing nice clothes that I would love to wear, but too big for, etc.

I LOVE to swim, but cannot force myself to get out in any public place in a swimsuit. I'm way too self-conscious for that.

One of the biggest reasons I have decided to lose the weight, is that my 2 Sons, who will be 17 and 18 this year, are concerned that I will develop health problems bercause of it. Frankly, I am concerned as well, and would like to get rid of "here and there" back pain, that is caused not by back "problems", but by the excess weight I'm forcing it to carry. My husband of 19 years (going on 20) says he loves me no matter my size, but I was 125 lbs when we met, and size 8. Now I'm size 24, and I am having to go over to the men's section to find polo shirts that will fit (loosely, of course). I'm sure he will be happy with the results as well...

The last straw was when I was standing on the corner the other day, and the police drove by and yelled "Break it up!" lol just kidding.

I'm going to finish this "novel" now, and get to reading some more great posts!

Hi, River. Welcome to ADBB! This place is a wealth of information and support. Of course, the book (Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution 2002 edition ...DANDR...) is what we always refer to. Many times we have additional conversation or clarification about the book...and LOTS of support here. I think you'll find many health improvements along with the benefit of weight loss in your journey. I've found NUMEROUS reasons to maintain this WOL other than the weight loss benefit.

Wow! Hello River! I'm glad you got your book! Lots of helpful info there for sure..and your are most correct, this board is a buffett of information! Don't ever feel like you're publishing a 'novel' we want to hear your story and it so wonderful of you for sharing with us. We'll see what we can do about that back pain, when I started this way of life almost a year ago, I weighed 295 pounds, my back hurt alot, I'd get out of bed, sore because I couldn't ever get comfortable it seemed, and always waking up, hour upon hour during the night. Now here I am 70 pounds down, still pushing forward, sleep through the night like a baby, jump out of bed, ready to take on each day! Granted we all have days we don't want to get out of bed, (nice soft fuzzy warm blankets calling us) haha but they are less and less. The back pain is all but gone, except those wonderful days my darling wife has a 'honey do' list, that involves moving every piece of furniture in the house! haha. My trouser size went from like a 46-48 to a nice loose comfortable 40. Shirts went from 3X to an X-Large. So it has worked very well for me!! Jump around to all the forums and make sure you read the sticky's, they contain lots of helpful information on your journey. Don't forget to take all your measurements, so you can track you loss too.

I think it's wonderful that your children want you to do this. They just wnat you to be healthy and happy so they enjoy your company for years to come! I applaud them and you for taking that first step! Good job.

Since you've got your book, if you have any questions at all about the rules of induction, please feel free to post, and we will try to answer your questions, this board is excellent for that kind of thing!

Welcome, and we hope to hear more about your weight loss journey!! Keep us posted!!

                      Re: Another happy newbie

Good morning all, and thanks for such a warm welcome! Charlene- I am lost too, but slowly finding my way. The more I read (both book and in here), the easier it gets.

I officially started AD last Friday. I felt kinda sluggish over the weekend, but yesterday I felt great! I need to take some pics today or tomorrow, so I have an accurate visual account of my starting point, and will be posting some pics (before, during, eventually "after") in the future.

I was browsing through some of my pictures yesterday, of a thinner, healthier looking me, and am as motivated as ever!

I went on a 3 mile "hike" through the woods along the river with Karma (my sweet black lab), over the weekend, and it was WAY great! I am scheduling times to get out and do more of those kinds of things.I like to play basketball, too, which is great excercise when you are not the greatest "hoopster", but it's what I call "invisible" excercise, like so fun, you don't even think of it as really excercising!

                      Gotta go for now.ta-ta!
