Hello, what a great board this is. Very, very inspiring. My journey to an appropriate weight for my height has been actively ongoing for 4 years now. My first 3 years were with Curves and their Weight Management Program. It took me four times of going through the 6 week program to get the principles, and each time I went through it I gave up something that I was "sure I'd never give up." Like, potato chips, salty crackers, cream and sugar in my coffee, Doritos (thought I'd die with a pack in my hand), ice cream, cookies, and finally the one I swore I'd never swear off of, red wine.
Anyway I was a casual exerciser too, I have a history of a back/hip injury that reactivated every time I tried a new program. So I was NOT a model Curves woman. But finally something clicked early in 2006 and I got serious, went to exercise at least 3 times a week and started applying the principles. Lost 38 pounds in 6 months!!
And felt so good about myself. Then, if some exercise was good, more was better, and even more was even better. After about 6 weeks of adding Jazzercise to my Curves routine, I dropped out with a bad knee injury and reactivation of some of the old back and hip thing. Over time since last July I gained back 7 of the 38 I'd lost. Not too bad, but not encouraging either.
New Years always gets me inspired for a new approach and usually I'm somewhat successful in whatever it is I'm focused on, so this year I made it that I was going to lose 50 pounds in 2007.
So that's my goal for this year, lose 50 pounds. My employer had tried to get me interested in the Atkins diet several times, she maintains her weight really well with it. BUT she also is not a "foodie" who derives pleasure from food, by her word. I remember when I was about 13 is when Atkins first came out and I alone among my family members could not seem to stay on it. I had only about 9 pounds over the "official right weight" thing, the rest of them had 20plus to lose, but in any case my not being able to stay on it in our competitive family left a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended!) so I wasn't very interested in my boss's suggestions To try Atkins.
But one day I gave it some thought, and since I'm no longer at the same Curves where my mentor still teaches their program, I felt that I wanted something really simple and with some fast results. So I decided about February 26 to give it a try. I set a goal of starting on March 1. I didn't have time to go out to get the book but I thought I had a pretty good idea, and I got on this site and did some reading.
So March 1 I started and although I have not done a "squeaky" induction (due to non-prior planning) i.e. I have used 2% milk in my coffee a couple of times, and I think the first day I had a sesame cracker with pnut butter....still, as of today I have been on it 12 days and lost somewhere between 10-12 pounds (it fluctuates every day it seems). !!!!!! 10-12 pounds already!
So now at 196-198 pounds I am below 200 for the first time in 6 years!!!! I AM SO EXCITED!!!
Already my jeans are loose and one pair is about ready to go by the wayside because it's really too loose.
I don't have any clue what target weight to set for myself. I'm now 50. When I was 40 I got pregnant and became toxemic (where your BP goes way high and your body stores the wastes from the fetus in the space between your cells and you retain water like crazy). I went from 160 at conceiving to 215. After the baby I only dropped down to 198, had ongoing high blood pressure and possibly onset of pre-diabetic state....anyway without going into all the gory details I was not able to exercise and was very depressed and did not take care of myself and....yadda yadda yadda....went on to gain at least 40 pounds. My highest weight that I know about was 238 when I started with Curves 4 years ago.
So I haven't a clue what my target weight is. My sister is about my height, her bodyfat percentage is 25 and 23 is optimum for women. She weighs 170 (we are a muscular type of build). So I figure my best shot is to aim for 160 (we always weighed 10 pounds different while growing up) to start with and see what it is when I get there.
My biggest question is, will I ever eat some of my favorite foods again? I love cottage cheese, yogurt, fruit, wine, chocolate. I am pretty certain that at my age and with my newfound maturity and wisdom (yes, there IS something good about getting older) I will be able to keep the weight off. I just don't know if I can live without pasta with red sauce and garlic bread. Well, I intend to do so for now at least until I get down to 160.
I think I want to really get serious and start writing down what I eat, so that I can be in the habit of it. Wouldn't that put me in a position to know what's going on when I get off track and start gaining weight, at some point when I start adding foods back in? I know that on Curves you go on maintenance and weigh yourself every day. You allow yourself to gain back only 3 pounds, then you do induction until you lose the 3 pounds, and then go back to eating your maintenance way.
Anyway that's getting way ahead of myself. I need to close this up and get on to Curves for exercise. Thank you all for this board, it has been instrumental in getting me on track this time. I feel like I could get a lot of support from the board, like I had during earlier times at Curves. I want to get some pictures posted, I have to get a friend to help me on that. All the signature stuff and all looks fun, too, I've never had much luck with this computer chat kind of thing, maybe I will learn here.
For now I'll sign off with what I can remember about.
