  • Root beer "float" - is it legal?

About seven years ago my former mother-in-law (who lives in NYC) and former patient of Dr Atkins, told me that Dr Atkins advised her to have either a root beer "float" or "chocolate shake" to satisfy sweets cravings.

These are made with a can of diet rootbeer, a dollop of heavy cream and some ice. Diet chocolate soda was the other suggestion but I dont even know if that's still avaialble? It also may include aspartame.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Thanks,

    Swan

Aspatame is bad for you, and in some people it causes major stalls!! Be very careful!

I think I recall seeing something like that in one of his books. If you can find a diet rootbeer (try diet rite brand--sweetened with Splenda instead of aspartame), I can't see why this "treat" wouldn't be okay.

NOW, I will say that you may want to define "Treat". In the book, Dr. Atkins says that a 'treat' or 'dessert' aren't EVERY DAY occurrences. If you have problems with a sweet tooth, the best advice I can give you is to "starve" the sweet tooth.

Low carb/sugar free junk food is STILL junk food. Eating junk food to excess is what has gotten a lot of us in trouble. You may not have these issues, but I feel I need to point them out because someone else reading this thread just might have that issue.

I have found, that after starving my sweet tooth duing induction and for about a week after, sweets to me are like drinking suryp straight from the bottle, even diet rite soda is just too sweet. Now if I find I need a change in staste I just take 2 oz cream cheese a half packet of slpenda and some cinnamon does the trick for me and I am good for the whole week.

If you always have something high fat (not necessarily sweet) to hand so you can nibble when cravings hit, you'll probably avoid disaster or falling from the wagon.

Re: Root beer "float" - is it legal?

I had one of the these last night. In other cycles of Atkin's I've done this as well.

While physiologically "legal" there might be something to just enduring the withdrawal of the "sweet tooth" mentally and overcoming it.

But if I really am going to cave, it's far better to cave in with a "farmer's soda" (as described in the book) and an Atkins bar than it is to get some bread, peanut butter , and high sugar jelly with a tall glass of milk.
