    @290 LBS

I was a lean 200 lbs when I was 22-23 but it's been that long since I've seen anything that side of 235.

Around 2000-2001, I started an Atkins program, I was about 280 with severe HBP. I got down to about 255. I was wrestling with a severe drinking problem though. In the fall of 2002 I started a recovery process from that. To avoid the severe discomfort of alcohol withdrawal I was told to eat sugar. When I said, "I'm on Atkins", I was advised that Atkins had to wait. First things first.

I entered that program at 260 and a year later weighed 290-295. In Jan 2003 I started another Atkins cycle but didn't follow it to the letter, I was in a hurry to lose weight so I made the mistake of thinking that 4 week cycles of induction followed by a week of "whatever I wanted" and back into a 4 week induction period ..... it worked but it was costly ..... by
August of 2003 I was at 245-235. My primary motivation for losing weight at the time was removed so I backed off Atkins and tried to eat like a "normal person". This meant I could have one S'mores poptart or two to three chocolate chip cookies, a slice of pizza. The lie being, I've never moderated when it came to eating anything with sugar or simple carbs.

Off and on, off and on. Lifting weights and exercising throughout. I managed to sustain the 255-260 range all the way up until May 1, 2006. Then I decided I needed to stop chewing tobacco. I've gained everything back and am now at 290lbs.

I no longer feel the need to stuff my face with comfort food because "I've quit drinking, I've quit tobacco, oh boo hoo I should be able to have a whole sleeve of cookies ONCE IN AWHILE". And my motivation for losing weight has changed.

In 2004, it was to try and join the service. At the time the max age was 35 and when I turned 35, I figured it was over. I realize the age is 42 today and some small part of me is still motivated towards that, but realistically, it's looking dim. My motivation today is to avoid the pain of being obese. Both parents are obese. Type II Diabetes runs rampant on my father's side and exists on my mother's side. Hanging around reformed drunks a lot I've seen a pattern, lots of drunks have sugar issues and some are diabetic. I've accepted as a foregone conclusion that I will be diabetic.

What I haven't accepted is that I will have to be obese. I haven't accepted that I will have to get "flebitis" or whatever that horrible thing is that has scarred my father's legs. I haven't accepted that I am required to have one leg chopped off like my uncle (TypeII).

Ergo, the name, WarOnTypeII. I'm not going down without a fight here and I joined up here for the information contained in these forums. Atkins .... while I might not have followed it to the letter in the past ... has proven itself to work for me and it got me a lot healthier than my excuses ever have.

So just wanted to chime in and say hey, thanks for the information and help.

Hi, welcome to ADBB. Want some ammunition for your war, read this post

    http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...read.php?t=386

Congratulations on quitting drinking and quitting the tobacco. I quit smoking in July. Please don't "accept as a foregone conclusion that you will be diabetic". You can end that madness today, by changing your life. That change is eating Atkins as a lifestyle change. You realize that if you do the program as Dr. Atkins wrote in the 2002 version of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, you get ALL FOODS back except for sugar and refined white flour. You get fruit, beans, nuts, potatoes even and bread (whole grain, of course).

Just as I was addicted to nicotine, I was addicted to carbohydrates--especially the bad ones. I changed my life a year ago, I follow the plan and now I'm VERY healthy, my doctor is thrilled, I no longer smell like an ash tray and I am a healthy weight. You can have all of that too.

Thanks for the direction jimmie48, I wish the "whoosh fairy" would come and take away the pounds since my last atkins cycle.

                sallyseachange,

Thanks. When I say "diabetic" I don't mean I've accepted the fact that I will have to take insulin shots and suffer all the deleterious effects no matter what I do. It's more like an attitude that ... if I don't act NOW ... I am destined for it, so I better act NOW. Know what I mean ?

It's been tough seeing the men I admired so much in my youth getting affected by it. I see my father. When I was 30, I was full blown alcoholic, dipping all the time, eating poorly weighing in at 270 or more. My father, when he was 30, was running 5-6 miles a day. You wouldn't tell that now by looking at him. So, I'm scared, scared enough to do something about it, and I have faith that I will succeed. But that fear is a healthy motivator I think.

                  Re: Started Yesterday .... Again

                  Hello WarOnTypeII,

I'm sitting here right now at work (lunch break) and read your post. First off, congratulations for making the decision to live this (WOL) Way of Life! We are thrilled to have you here. I see a few people have already given a little ammo for your war! Most excellent! My name is Scooter, I have been honored with the awesome task of welcoming new people like yourself to the board. This board is the right place to come, a year ago, I weighed 295 pounds totally addicted to flour and sugar...now...I'm still losing weight, I've lost 70 pounds so far, and getting so much closer to goal. Another words, it can be done. It sounds to me like you have the moral fiber, and attitude that it takes to live this lifestyle. Congrats on overcoming the alcohol, and congrats on overcoming smoking, wow.....good for you! We'll take the wheel and help steer you in the right direction.

I want to share a few links with you to help things along. 1st off make sure you pick up a copy of Dr. Atkins book (DANDR) Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution 2002 edition - as this will basically be your layout for success and health! Read the whole book, some people (myself included at first) just skim through the book to the chapters on Induction, or OWL (On Going Weightloss), and what's acceptable and what's not. Then I found this site and saw how everybody recommended reading the entire book. So I did, and how much more I gained from it. So please pick up a copy, you can also get from your local library while you're waiting on your copy to get there.

Just so you can see the types of food you'll be eating on this Plan go here
http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/index.html, there are all kinds of induction friendly recipes there, you might want to check out a couple cooks books that I use, Dana Carpender 500 Low Carb Recipes, and another one by the the same lady, 500 more low carb recipes. Actually some of my family and friends (big Carb eaters) have tried and love some of these recipes.

Next, you'll want to be tracking everything you eat (everything you put in your mouth) that way you can see what your FAT intake, CARB intake, CALORIES, and such. You can use www.fitday.com , a lot of folks here on the board use it faithfully. There is all sorts of useful info there, reports, etc and it comes with a Journal you can keep, this is a FREE program, it's an online program.

You will want to initiate an exercise regime, at first it may only be walking 10 minutes each day, maybe more depending on you and how you feel. I guarantee you will notice a change in your energy levels, the way you sleep at night, your blood circulation etc. I can tell you this honestly because it is everything that I felt when I started this way of life.

Please jump around to all the forums and read the sticky's (they are little introductory statements by members who have helpful information and things to try) and make some posts. We're all in the same boat, we all have obstacles to overcome, if we can help at all, or if you sometimes feel like you'd rather come here than eat that 'sleeve of cookies' I highly recommend it. I draw so much motivation and determination from this board and it is and excellent tool to remain focused.

Congrats on making the decision to come here, I hope to hear and see more of you (until you start losing weight...we'll still want to see you...just less of you to hang around with us!!)

Let me know if you need any help or have any questions!

                    Re: Started Yesterday .... Again

Thanks Scooter. I'm psyched. Yesterday I read a bunch of stuff here and I saw that guy Kent and his videos and am feeling highly motivated.

Where's a good place to run what I've eaten yesterday and today by somebody ? I have the book but it's been a couplefew years since I've read in it. And like you I just skimmed to the parts about Induction and OWL.

I realize it's polite to RFTM and RTFF before asking questions and stuff but by the same token I don't want to say "Okay, I'm going to cracker barrel and eating pancakes all week until I finish the book".

P.S. I never smoked it was Kodiak Dipping tobacco. Apparently one of the toughest nicotine delivery systems to quit. Which is why I'm splitting hairs ...

Gotcha! You're right... fear is quite a motivator.
It's wonderful that you've taken the first steps to changing your life... and so causing the fear to recede.

You can get your menu checked in the "Review my Menu" forum. There are plenty of people who'll give their opinions and tell you where (or if) it needs tweaking. It's helpful if you state what phase of Atkins you're doing and if you give quantities too.
