  • 3rd try at atkins! Need some info

Hello, this is my first post, but I joined yesterday, which was my first day back on atkins. I have never made it past induction, as i always get sick.

Yesterday was different, I had headaches all day and no energy. As I was eating dinner last night I couldn't eat and started feeling ill. So, I went to bed.

About an hour after I laid down, I got up to go to the restroom and ended up vomiting. I have never vomited that bad in my life! It scared me, but I got up today and will keep trying this diet. Is the sick feeling and vomiting normal?

Well, wish me luck.... I am on day 2.

Oh, btw, my name is Tom.

Oh, and can I have diet cokes on this diet? I think my headaches could have been from a lack of caffeine, as I drink alot of soft drinks.A diet sprite after feeling sick would have been nice.

You really should start by reading a copy of Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (Aka DANDR at ADBB). Make sure it's the completely revised (2002) edition. Everything is there; you can often find it at thrift shops if not at a local book seller.

Reading the "stickies" in the Induction forum will help you learn the ropes as well.

Welcome to the board. You will find plenty of advice and encouragement here to get you going this time.

Some do get what is known as "induction flu" symptoms in the early part of induction. Several things can be responsible, including withdrawal from things like caffeine, (which you should avoid), accumulated toxins being flushed from your body as it begins to cleanse itself, shifts in water and electrolyte balances from not drinking enough water, not replacing certain nutrients.

You might wish to post what you ate for a day in the "review my menu" thread, and see if your diet is out of kilter. Include your water and other drinks, supplements, quantities, and included ingredients/added condiments.

        Good luck!

Re: 3rd try at atkins! Need some info

          Yesterday:
Breakfast - 2 sirloin pattys with american cheese and a small v8
Lunch - ham and cheese and a hamburger patty.
Snack an hour later with a large v8 juice, since I felt I needed veggies.
Dinner - pork chop and a salad, but got sick and went to bed, so I didn't eat much.

Today, so far 3 scrambled eggs, 4 slices of bacon, celery stalk with piminto cheese and a v8

I think I need caffeine, since I normally take in alot of it. I think going carb and caffeine frr the first day wasn't a good idea?

Vegetable juice is not allowed until after Induction, and then only the amount that allows for 5 gram net carb (which isn't very much). Have REAL veggies instead of the juice. You need the fiber and the nutrients. 3 cups per day, you only had 1 celery stalk and however much was in your "salad". By the way, what WAS in your Salad?

It's going to take time to kick addiction to both carbs and caffeine. Most followers on the board have been there and done that...and kicked BOTH addictions at the same time. Say you do 2 weeks kicking carbs and go through all the withdrawal...and then decide to kick the caffeine, which is another 2 weeks of withdrawal. That's 4 weeks total, when you could have suffered through just 2 weeks. Withdrawal is withdrawal. I'd rather do it for 2 weeks than 4.

Welcomoe Xecutech! Glad you found us here.

Sorry to hear you've been feeling rotten. Quite likely this is induction flu, which is your body withdrawing from carbs/caffeine and other nasties. Hope you feel better soon... usually people wake up one morning feeling ultra energised.

              Hang in there!

Joy gave you great advice re juice (illegal) vs. real veggies. Whenever possible go for "real" foods over processed stuff. Where man meddles too much, it always messes things up!

Hey Tom! Welcome to the board. I think you need more veggies (and not V-8 - slap on the forehead!). Your salad should be 2 cups of approved "salad veggies" plus one cup of other veggie (like broccoli, cauliflower, spinach etc) per day.

Go read arount the induction forum and the FAQ's, you will find tons of information and lists as to what's inductino approved.

I think you may have induction flu as well. Don't give up, just keep eating properly for a few days and drink plenty of water.

If at all possible, I would suggest to try a nice clean induction. You will feel better it takes a few days tho. It can be very hard to stop caffine, i know cause I was addicted to it majorly. I have type 2 diabetes, I dont know if I do anymore cause I havnt been to the doctor. But I know I have it under control. I had a diabetic thirst you wouldn't believe, I was drinking (this is no lie) almost a gallon of milk a day and 1-3 2liters of pop everyday, depending on how bad the thirst was. Since I have started I no longer have that thirst, it's amazing. I kinda wish I did have it tho to help me get my water down faster . But now since I drink water and nothing but water, I feel great, I dont even want pop anymore, just do your very best and push yourself apast them few rough days and it WILL be worth it, I wish you very good luck and please let us know how it goes!

Thank you all for your fast replies and words of encouragement. I think having a forum like this will help. My wife also started atkins with me, so I do have someone to help hold me in line.

I hate that we cant have vegetable juices. I don't care much for veggies, prolly the reason I am fat in the first place. I do like some veggies, but was afraid I would get tired of eating them only.

I am missing Starbucks the most, it was hard driving past there today!
I guess the money I am saving from $5 coffees could be used to buy smaller clothes later.

                      Yep, save that money.

What kinds of vegetables DO you like?

Maybe we can suggest some new veggies for you to try, or ways of preparing them. Take on a task to try a new vegetable every couple of days. You might find that you can learn to love vegetables.

My favorite all time vegetable now is the Jicama. Before starting Atkins I didn't even know what a jicama was. I can eat them every single day now. It's a root vegetable that is not starchy, shaped like a turnip, has a brown papery skin like a potato, has a white flesh like a raw potatoe and sort of tastes like a dry pear. A little sweeter than potato, no starch, but not as sweet or juicy as a pear. I eat them raw, peel and eat, I'll chop them up on salad, make them the base of a salad with some yellow bell pepper and lime flavored olive oil and sea salt. Mmmmmmm I'm drooling over here.

Hi there!! Sorry youre having a rotten induction...that can be the pits!! I may have missed it but I didnt see much about water....are you drinking plenty of water?? I know that if I dont drink enough for the day I feel awful. I know its a "B" trying to kick certain habits...Ive kicked many in my lifetime but caff. is one of the hardest. I tried, and failed and tried and failed again so I just cut back to about one cup a day. As for the veggie juice thing....what about a juicer??? I dont like Veg juice ( unless its a bloody mary ) so I dont even know what goes into it but couldnt you make your own? Everyone's right about the processed food...steer clear. Oh yeah and Im glad your wife is joining you, it ALWAYS helps to have a strong support team!!

No juices, even if you juice them yourself. The problem with juice is the fact that you discard the FIBER which is why the veggies are important. AND all the sugars that are natural in the vegetable are CONDENSED in the juice. Say you have a tomato that is the size of 1 cup, by the time you squeeze it now you have ALL the sugar from that one tomato, throw away the fiber (you don't get to subtract it unless you EAT IT) and its now only 1/4 cup, so you juice ANOTHER tomato and have just DOUBLED the carbs for 1/2 a cup. Juices are condensed, so you can only have a tiny amount of them for a very high net carb count. Particularly fruit juices.

Now, I'm not saying you cannot EVER have V8. Because you can, on the Ongoing Weight Loss phase vegetable rung and only in 5 net gram increments.

Well, romaine lettuce, green beans, cabbage, turnip greens, spinach, onions, bell peppers, mushrooms and now I can choke down celery. I don't eat hardly any raw vegetables. I will try some new ones though, as I want this to work for me. I think the ones I listed are allowed.

I will try to get the book today, we have an older one somewhere at the house from where my wife did atkins years ago.

Yes, they are all allowed. You don't have to eat your veggies raw. Except for Jicama I'm not too big of a raw veggie fan myself.

                              Lettuce
                              bell peppers
                              mushroom
celery are all "salad" veggies. Try some of the others on the list, particularly ones you've never had. You just might find some that you like. You can have 2 cups per day of these veggies. Since you like bell peppers, go for those. They have LOTS of vitamin C per serving--even more than oranges do! YAY.

Green beans, cabbage, turnip greens, spinach, onions (small quantities) are all 1 cup per day veggies (just during the 2 week induction--after that you can have more) and are all great choices. Lots of fiber and vitamins in those veggies.

Oh and obviously you like tomato, since you are drinking V8, so have the raw tomatos too--1 cup per day.
