  • New to atkins & this site - Help!

    Hi all,

I am new to atkins & to this site too & really need some advice.. I started Atkins on Sunday & have become really really constipated & so far have only lost a pound on the scales! Have stuck to the book rigidly & only eaten what it suggests. I was wondering if I can take Fybogel or Senokot? I looked at the ingredients for senokot & it said it contains "7.5mg sonnosides in a base containing calcium phosphate, maize starch, lactose & magnesium stearate" I really need help as I don't want to take this & set myself back at square one. I have found the last few days so hard & am desperate to stick to this diet to shed my baby weight.

    Welcome Pinz!!

Nice to meet you. Welcome to the spotlight. First off, congrats on day 4! I'm not sure about those items you mentioned (Fybogel or Senokot) but most people use a product called psylium husk, you mix it with water and it'll do the trick.

Secondly, you mentioned that you're doing everything by the book, how much water are drinking. I drink 2 - 3 74 ounce containers of water faithfully each day. Water drinking is 100% neccessary on this plan. I'm really sorry you're having a bit of a problem, but eventually your body will get used to things and adjust to the way your eating.

Drink that water!!!! Welcome to the boards, jump around and check out all the forums, the before and after pictures are absolutely awesome!! Very inspiring.

Best of luck to you! Don't be a stranger, and keep us updated on your success and progress! Don't be afraid to ask questions either!! Lots of folks willing to assist, or even just provide a shoulder should you need to lean on one.

Pinz....If you'll look in your DANDR (Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, edition 2002) in chapter 12/Time to review your results...ANSWERS...He addresses constipation> If by doing the induction exactly as it is written (and making absolutely sure you are consuming a min of eight 8-oz glasses of water a day) and you are still having constipation, then a tablespoon of wheat bran daily, or flaxseed or psyllium husks.

Other methods of constipation relief may contain carbs that could interfer with your blood sugar levels. Exercise and extra water have usually done the trick for me. Best wishes!!

Yep, one of the reasons for the water is to avoid constipation. Must drink 64 ounces plus an additional 8 ounces for every 25 lbs you want to lose.

AND eat your 3 cups of vegetables.

Just a side note - when I was on induction I used the capsules containing senoside extract in a base of psyllium husks (no starch or sugar) called "Senna Prompt". When I took the suggested 5 capsules, it cramped me up miserably before my movement. I did that on 2 occasions before realizing it's the stimulant senoside extracts. 3 was still a bit harsh. I've found just one capsule to be adequate thru trial and error and rarely ever need to use any now. Steer clear of iceberg lettuce and aim for the most fiber and nutrient bang for your veggie buck, and drink extra water and you problem should resolve on it's own.

Warm welcome to you Pinz. Glad you found us here at ADBB!

I see the others have given you good advice about psyllium/flaxseed (my preference because you can do lots with it) and loads of water for constipation.

The water is important for weight loss also. It takes energy to heat the water you drink to body temperature, so it helps the weight loss that way, as well as being so good for you.

            Happy losing!

Welcome Pinz! You are in the right spot! I too, suffered from constipation when I started this way of eating. Still do. Even with adequate water consumption, which for me is over 100 oz. a day. Just because I feel better when I am very hydrated. I use a product by the brand name, Konsyl, it is an all natural psyillium husks fiber. It has only .05 grams of carbs and 6 grams of fiber per serving. I find it at Wal-Mart and it seems to work. However, it can make you feel bloated and a bit gassy until your body adjusts to it. Good luck and welcome to the board....you are among friends!

Re: New to atkins & this site - Help!

                Hi All,

Thanks very much for welcoming me & all the encouragement! I will try the suggestions & hopefully they make a difference. I weighed myself this morning & am the same as yesterday but hopefully things should improve soon. I am drinking 3 litres of water a day so its not that but I reckon its just the change in diet as I confess to being a total carb junkie! I managed to track down pysllium husks in capsule form, there is no dietry information on it but it contains psyllium husk, capsule shell (gelatine) anti-caking agents (magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide) which I presume are ok. I am in Ireland which isn't the most Atkins friendly place in the world, so it was hard to find the husks.

                EDIT
