  • Newbie Book Question??

Hi. I am an absolute raw beginner and was seriously thinking about commiting to the Atkins way. I have a couple of questions, however.
I purchased a "kit" book in the store... it has the "New Diet Rev" book (3rd edition) the "new diet cookbook" a journal and the gram counter. It is in a sealed package and I just wanted to make sure that I have the correct book. I believe the copyright is 2003.
Also, I was skeptical about it's safety (have high chol.and am hypoglycemic) until last week when it has been spotlighted on the national news as being "safe and effective" according to a recent Stanford research study.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Re: Newbie Book Question??

We use the 2002 edition...I'm not sure if there was a 2003 edition and if it differed much from 2002. Hopefully someone like not2late will see this and be able to answer.

I have been on this plan for a year and have lost 78 lbs, lowered my blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood glucose, I no longer have heartburn, headaches, muscle aches, I have lots of energy and a positive attitude. My doctor is thrilled.

I have one caveat. This plan IS safe and it IS effective when you read the book and do it that way. Making up your own rules or using what someone else tells you does not work. Many people think that if low carb is good, then no carb is better...WRONG. Many people hear (incorrectly) in the media that Atkins is a egg, bacon and cheese gorge fest...WRONG. If you're going to put your time and effort into this, do it the right way and it will work very well.

Welcome Buddyjay! Glad to have you here at ADBB.

The reason we use the 2002 edition here is because that was the last one that Dr Atkins wrote entirely... before his death. If you can get hold of a copy of that edition, it would be good.

Re "healthy diet or not..." , well most people find that their numbers improve (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar) on this way of eating. It's a good thing to have a blood test before starting for later comparison, and then again after a little while on Atkins (not less than six weeks). That way you can see the changes which almost certainly will be for the better.

The few people that find their total cholesterol rises (I'm one), find that their good cholesterol (HDL) goes up, and the bad cholesterol (LDL) goes down... giving a better "risk" ratio. This is what happened to me, and when I asked my doctor (who was thrilled with these results) if I could go on eating eggs, cream and cheese... he said "absolutely yes!"

Keep us posted about your progress... we're all behind you 100%.

Hi Buddy! Welcome to the board. I'm impressed with your preparation for this. I ditto what the Validrouge and Sallyseachange said. It's good to see that positive articles are being published on a regular basis so people need not fear eating this way. As you go along, you will be eating from every food group eventually. Good carbs only!

                Re: Newbie Book Question??

Is your copy of that copyright 1992, Avon books? It will do just fine, however there's a 2002 edition that has additional information and is the one we use around here. Personally I have the same one as you and that's the one I always used until very recently. You can go to the induction forum to get the list of food Rungs of adding foods into your diet, I don't think the edition you have is as point blank about that. My 2002 edition is blue/yellow/green striped on the cover, but again the one you have will do.

                  Re: Newbie Book Question??

Thanks for all the input. It turns out that I DO have the correct book. It is the 2002 version but it was PACKAGED with three other books (gram counter, cookbook & journal) in 2004. I couldn't check the copyright since it was in a sealed pkg, but was able to locate all the info on Amazon. Thanks again.
