  • Hi Everyone! My intro...

Hi Everyone! I could almost copy Gentlerain73's intro!! I did Atkins a few years ago and lost 65lbs. I loved it and felt GREAT while doing it. My doctors told me I would never get pg without a lot of medical intervention, so after about 13 years, I figured it would never happen on our own. Surprise! At age 42! I totally think it was Atkins. I don't think I would have gotten pg simply from the weight loss alone since I'd lost weight before and it didn't make any difference. Also, dh was doing Atkins all this time and I really think it helped his body perform better too. Enough personal stuff! LOL! I had intended to go on maintenence when I got pg, but I totally, totally blew it. I knew I'd do it again and after pg and breastfeeding, 3 years later, I'm ready to do it again.

Dh and I are both doing it together and we've been slowly adding Atkins-friendly foods w/o really giving up the carbs for the last couple of weeks, just waiting for me to get over an upper respiratory infection. I think I may be coughing for a few more weeks, but I'm feeling so much better that I announced to him this morning that we're starting today! We both want to lose over 100lbs.

Last time it was very tempting to feel jealous about my dh's quick and easy weight loss, however, once I did the math, I realized that we were losing at the same rate, percentagewise. He lost more, faster, but he had a lot more to lose. We both want to lose about the same percentage of body weight this time too, so we're thinking about making mini-goals based on percent instead of pounds and rewarding ourselves when we each reach one.

    Any good reward ideas?

Also, I have a ds (6yrs) and a dd (2.5yrs). For those of you with children, have you changed their diets as well? In what way?

I'm so happy I found this site and I even found someone I know here!! I hope to be around for a long time.

      Hi Sheepie

Welcome back to Atkins. This isn't my first time around either, but hopefully my last. I'm on day eight of induction and I think the worst of the "induction flu" and cravings are gone.

I have three kids (15, 8, and 4) and both my husband and I are on Atkins this time. The kids mostly eat the same things that we do except I add things to their meals like fruit, oatmeal, etc - so you don't have to make two seperate meals. I don't know how fond of pasta your kids are? I guess if you can't stop giving them that, you might make it for them for lunch. Also, as my kids are a bit older than yours, I've started letting them bake their own cupcakes for school lunches. Maybe your six year old could be taught to do this with an oatmeal or carrot cake mix and your supervision. If your kids don't eat sweets at all right now, then your starting off a step ahead.

      Good Luck!

PS I've noticed that my grocery bill is going way down because I'm not buying junk.

Hi Sheepie! Welcome to the board. It's great that DH is doing this with you. Don't you just hate how quickly men lose weight? It's so not fair! But, with good eating and staying on plan, you too will lose weight. Slow and steady is the way to go!

Hey there Sheepie! Welcome to our happy family.

Yep Silly's right... men lose quite a bit faster than women, and they can eat more than we can without gaining... sheesh! It's such an unfair world!!!!

I never really altered my kids meals... here in Italy everyone is so pasta and bread focused that's it's hard... but I do make sure their pasta is very "al dente" (with a bite) as overcooking pasta causes it to impact more on your blood sugar causing cravings.
If we have meat and veggies, I just leave the carby things (potatoes, rice) etc. off my plate and have an extra amount of green veggies or substitutions like fauxtatoes (mashed potato made with cauliflower) or fauxrice (grated cauliflower microwaved for a very short time).

You'll find it gets easy when you get into a routine.

About rewards... I'd avoid food rewards, and not associate food with "rewarding". A little pampering treat perhaps... like a trip to the hair salon? Or something to wear on your ever shrinking figure? For me, if truth be told... the weight loss alone was the biggest reward I could have, but I admit it was fun to buy clothes in lower sizes... especially one time, when I went to buy my usual brand of (unisex) jeans and was told that they didn't make that brand in sizes as small as mine!!
You'll soon find similar things happening to you, I'm sure.

          Happy losing!

            Good Morning Sheepie!

Great to have you with us!! Excellent choice coming back. Might I suggest popping into the Second Time Around Club forum...say hello, we have daily check in and it's starting to see some action. People talking about daily goals and such, and asking questions. First off, how excellent that you are doing this with your husband and family. My sister has a 7 year old DD and DS (twins) and an 11 year old DS. Now, she has started this plan about a month and a half ago, and other than the little girl saying ('little girls need refined sugar mommy...in cookies...haha') they have all been loving this lifestyle. Especially since they've stopped the fast food, junk food, the kids munch on veggies and such. She still keeps bread in the house for the kids to have a sandwich, and they do have a special treat or reward or two for the children. Her husband is trying to stick to plan but really struggling. I myself see no reason why a child could not eat this way, with some minor differences, however, that being said, maybe talk to their doctor at the next check up and inform him what you and your DH are doing. He may be able to offer some insight on the subject.

Anyway, it is very nice to meet you, please don't be a stranger and stop in at STAC and say hello!

Best of wishes. Life is good!

              Re: Hi Everyone! My intro...

I have done atkins before also, but have never thought of it as a way of live untill now. There are so many new options that have helped me to stay on this and I am rarly hungry. I love not having the cravings! It is fantastic!

I get a little scared somethimes that I am not going to loose weight, or that I will give up. I plan on this being the last time I have to START a diet.

I have not really changed the way that my kids eat accept that we don't go to fast food as much and they don't get any junk food. They still eat bread. I tried to give them the mock mashed potatoes yesterday and they did not like them, I was quite surprized. I think that I will keep trying to give it to them!

              Have a great day!
