  • 1st week

I am new to this Adkins way of life, today marks my 1st week. I believe I have
followed it correctly. Eggs with cheese and turkey bacon for breakfast, turkey
and cheese rollups for lunch and usually tuna or chicken with a salad for dinner.
I snack on cucumbers and sugar free jello, I switched from diet pepsi to pepsi
one as they say aspartame is a no no in the soda, I have splenda in my soda
now, also drink unsweetened iced tea and lots of water. Have lost 1 pound this
week, I have 13 more pounds to go since I have lost weight before I started
Adkins. What am I doing wrong? Oh yeah, I also jog and do the stepper and
sit ups, exercizing 4-5 days a week. Help.

    Re: 1st week

Sorry I'm new with no experience, but someone will come along shortly to help you out.

I can make an educated guess, that you may have stalled in the poundage but maybe still losing the inches.

I know it's a great motivator to see the lbs melting off but if you are exercising 4 to 5 times a week you are going to start to gain muscle and that is much heavier than fat. Therefore the scale is not dropping as quickly as before..... again just an educated guess!!

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you might find, you get what you need.

If you haven't read the stickys re the Induction phase or Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002 revised edition!) it would be a very good idea. In the directions, you will see limits to the amount of artificial sweetener, plus total volumes of other foods you should eat. You might wish to post a full days menu including the quantities of everything. Also, if you have used pre-prepared or deli food you may have taken in added ingredients you don't want, such as is often in deli/sandwich meats and prepared salads & dressings.

Hello and welcome! Glad you're here with us.

In the first two weeks of induction the norm is to lose between 5%-10% of the total weight you need to lose. So... if you need to lose 13 lbs total, and have lost 1 lb in the first week, I'd say you're doing splendidly. Correct my maths if I'm wrong anyone (math dummie here!).

              Re: 1st week

Hi aerosmithgirl! Welcome to the board. Sally's right in sayint that the pound you lost is great since you only have 13 to lose.

Are you eating enough veggies? You should be having 2 cups of "salad veggies" plus one cup of regular veegie (like broccoli, cauliflower, spincah) each and every day during the first two weeks. Based on your menu, I'm not sure you're eating enough!

Can you entirely skip the Pepsi One and stick to water or iced tea for a while?

Also, I think since you don't have that much to lose, you should follow the rungs of Atkins and climb the ladder in order, after the 2 week induction. You will be amazed how fast you can reach your goal.

                Re: 1st week

Thank you all for your reply and help. I will check all induction rules, but think
I am following it. I will, however, cut down on my pepsi one and try and only
have one a day. Kind of hooked on the sugar free jello, that will be tough to
eat less of those. As far as the veggies go, I think I'm eating plenty of those.
Will snack on raw green beans and sliced cucumbers, my fav. Have lost another
pound and today marks the 14th day. Have lost 2 pounds so far, I have cut the
exercize for the 2nd week, but think I will start back up with exercizing for the
3rd week. I think I was building too much muscle as someone else thought that
too. Wish me luck for the third week as I'm not sure what to eat. I think the
carbs go up just a bit, from 20-40 I think. Can I eat those chocolate Adkins
bars on the 3rd week which starts tomorrow, or will that stall weight loss.

                  Re: 1st week

Hey ASG~ I ate the SF Jello daily when I first started. It's nice to have a little treat. if it's not affecting your loss, go ahead and eat it. As you move along you will be able to have more substantial treats.

Regarding the bars, don't even go there. They are not a real food and the carb counts are deceiving. You might want to read up on sugar alcohols. Even though they say 2 net carbs, you are really eating the full 18 or whatever carbs. If you don't try them, you won't get addicted to them! Take it from one who knows. It's much better to stick to real foods!

Hi there....way to go on the 2lbs.....and by all means I would encourage you to a copy of the Atkins book if you don't because the first time I started I received so much advise from ppl who had tried it or thought they understood it, and I was eating things I certainly should not have been eating....
Look forward to hearing how things go for you this week.....be sure and read the links if you can't get the book or even if you do...there is some great info on when you know to add carbs and when you shouldn't/or cut back
                    Hugs

Hey Sillygirl and Bradybunchmom and others; thanks for the advise on not eating the
adkins bars and sticking to real food. I actually tried one of those low carb soups that
I made, stayed away from prepared foods and lost 3 pounds this week. Cant believe it,
because I actually ate fruit this week but did eat healthy food choices. When my famil
was eating cheeseburgers, I eat fish. I will have to make dessert soon for a party, and
I was watching this low carb show and I think I can cook with soy flour.Keep you posted.

Fruit? What kind of fruit did you have? Fruit is not allowed during the induction phase, as it is further up the food rungs (Rung 4) and then it's only berries.

You can have cheeseburgers with your family, in fact you can have 2 of them if you wanted. Just don't eat the bun!

Great job on fresh food and 3 pounds gone!

Sillygirl...wow am I confused. Thanks so much for that food ladder link. I basically went
on what my sister said that has done Adkins. The first two weeks I thought was induction, then I thought you could add fruit. I didnt know anything about this rung stages. I made sure to eat low glycemic fruit though, I bought a bag of berries which had
strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberrys and had a small portion of it with
whipped cream, yum. I will have to go to the library, I think I need to read the book.
                          Thanks for setting me straight.
