  • Ten Years Wiser...

Hey, everyone. I am a 35 year old wife, mom and teacher. My son is 10 years old and autistic. When he was born, I walked out of the hospital weighing 265 pounds. Two years later, my doctor advised me to start the Atkins diet or I would be in serious trouble. I took her advice. I was on Atkins for 8 months and lost 54 pounds. Then my son was diagnosed with autism. I am a stress eater and I have to tell you I fell off the wagon hard. It was a very difficult time for my husband and me, but we've made it and so has my son. He is now 10 years old and very high functioning. He's off to middle school next year. I've been thinking alot about the future and the need to be healthy. I'm right back where I started 10 years ago - at 265. *sigh*

SO! Time to start again. I've had several jump starts, but now I'm very serious. Reading this board has gotten me inspired again. I've enlisted help from my family, friends, and colleagues. They are in it with me for the long haul.

Here's to losing 130 pounds, shopping in the misses section, and living a long and healthy life for my son!

        Hi and welcome!!
I can so relate to you. My two youngest sons are autistic..they are 6 and 3. When the first one was diagnosed it was such a devastating time in our lives and i had just given birth to the baby...and was exhausted constantly and gained 60 lbs..on top of my already overweight frame. The past 3 years have been a blur..but im ready to get back to health and take care of me. It just hard finding the time for exercizing but just gotta try the best i can.
We can do it!! Taking care of YOU is the best thing u can do for your family.
        Best of luck!

I am very happy that you joined this board. Do not "waste" another ten years of your life. As I have lost weight I have found it much easier to handle stress. I just feel more calm when dealing with the things that life throws at you. Post lots and lots and do not be afraid to ask questions! Wishing you the best!

Thanks so much for the support! Even though my weight loss goal is large, I am going to take things one day at a time. I see that others on the board have set mini goals for themselves and that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to start with 20 lbs. It sounds easier chunking it into pieces. Twenty pounds doesn't sound near as intimidating as 130!
