  • Not new to Atkin's but new to posting, hello!

    Hello!
    First time on Atkin's: 1994
    Second time: 1997
    Third time: 1999
    And now.

I used to use the Atkin's diet to cut flab for bodybuilding purposes. I also used a variation of the Atkin's diet for building muscle, but more on that later.

    Worst stats: 5"10, 265 pounds, 31% bodyfat
    Current stats: 5"10, 238 pounds, 23% bodyfat
Best stats: 5"9, 210 pounds, 12% bodyfat (although I was once 165 pounds and 8% bodyfat)

I don't have the same goals as I used to in the exercise department, so I'd be happy to get down to 200-210 pounds and have the bodyfat be right at 15%.

My biggest hangups on Atkin's: lethargy and constipation (too much info?), fear that ketosis is killing me
My best successes on Atkin's: healthier skin tone, nails and hair grows faster (this isn't exactly a plus), increased muscular definition when combined with exercise, reduced appetite

Good morning basestealer, welcome to the spotlight buddy. Great to have you with us. Sounds to me like you've been touched by the 'negative press' and I understand your concerns. You've come to the right place for sure, lots of helpful information here, this site is basically a buffet of knowledge. Please be sure to post your concerns at anytime!! You mentioned a 'variation' of the Atkins diet, well all I recommend there (as you will find by the majority of members here) that you stay away from variations and stick straight to the rules as stated in DANDR (Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution 2002 edition). If you follow that basic blueprint so to speak, you should be fine!

Our good friend, Seasallychange has started a pretty cool exercise challenge at:

hi basestealer! Welcome back to Atkins! Love the stats above, you gained an inch in height! What's that about, LOL?

Seriously, you feel lethargic while doing Atkins? Do you take vitamin supplements? You really should be experiencing more energy eating this way. It's usually the carbs that make us tired. As for the constipation, there are things you can do to aleviate that! Try to drink lots of water, and eat all of your veggies.

We have a thread about supplements, you may want to look at that

            Hi,
The gain in height was probably do to my age--I was 18 or so when those measurements were taken and grew an inch since then. I was lethargic like most at first, but the energy increased a few days into the diet. However, I was still lacking in energy versus pre-Atkins, but then again I was hitting the gym 2 hours a day in addition to working full time and walking/running 5-10 miles a day. I cut out the aerobic shortly after going on the Atkin's program, but continued lifting weights. I'm specifically referring to the induction phase. I didn't bother following the book to a T afterwards, but my normal "healthy" diet is usually under 100 carbs per day. The variation of Atkins that I used was a ketogenic cycle that consisted of carb loading at specific intervals to make workout sessions more productive, and then immediately jumping back into ketosis afterwards.

LOL! Ok then, another year older and another year wiser! This time, I urge you to follow not only the rules of induction, but also moving up the "rungs" of food appropriately!
