  • Introduce myself, I guess!

So I've always been a fat kid.

When I was 6 months old, the doctor put me on a diet, because I was gaining too much weight with whole milk. Elementary, middle and high school were terror for me. By the time I graduated 12th grade, I probably weighed around 250 or 275.

By the time I was 24, I was at 350. I had decided I wanted to perform missionary service for my church. I went through all of the health and physical exams... only to be told that because so much of missionary work is physical, and because of their health concerns for me, that I'd have to lose at least 70 pounds before I'd be allowed to serve. Folks in my church set me up with a personal trainer who put me on Atkins and light exercise.

Within 3 months, I had lost my 70 pounds, and was geared up to go. I never knew that I could control my weight before! I kept sticking to basic Atkins principles, and I kept losing!!

By the time I was done with my missionary service (well, actually, quite a bit before I was done), I was 190 pounds (that's 160 lost, for those who can't add).

I have tough times... where donuts scream my name, and every freshly baked pizza seems to be made just for me. I don't give in, though, because I can't go back to living a life where tying my shoes was an ordeal, and where walking through the house winded me.

This is me today, and I love it. Love to hear from any of you who'd like to share your story. Thanks!

                Re: Introduce myself, I guess!

                My mission? So exotic.

Iowa, Des Moines. Spanish-speaking. I learned and used a language that represents less than 3% of the population of the state. It was very challenging, but also very rewarding. Tracting in -15 degree weather... not fun.

Thanks for all the positive encouragement, guys. It feels great.
