  • Just started (Again)

Hi, I'm Dave and I'm overweight, again. I did Boot Camp two years ago and was doing a great job, but fell off the wagon and, well here I am back just over 300 lbs. At 6' 0" I can carry the weight not too bad, at least that is what I have been telling myself, but I know I really need to shift at least 70lbs. Ideally I would like to take off 92lbs, which would make me 15 stones in UK weight. (14lbs to a stone).

I started work as a Prison Officer almost 10 years and was 252lbs, but had to lose 28 lbs to get in due to a health check. I managed this at the time and so got down to 224lbs. So in 10 years I have put on almost 80lbs. This is despite numerous "diets" and a couple of attempts at Atkins, so who knows what I have lost and gained again.

Anyway, I am 11 days away from my 39th birthday and the old addage comes out. "I don't want to be fat at forty." The best way I know how to lose weight is though Atkins but I don't want to just say, "I'm going to do it for a year." That would be a cop out. I really now need a way of eating for life, which will maintain my weight where I want it, and who is to say that it will only take a year. It may take longer. So I have to be committed, (I should be).

I have short term goals as well, which is always a good motivation. My wife and I, ( she is also on Atkins, so good support mechanism) are going to a music festival, T in the Park, in two months and really need to lose weight before then. We need to get the two of us into a three man tent. I haven't tried the tent on for size yet, but hopefully we shouldn't have any problems. So short term goal is to lose as much as possible by then, followed by long term goals.

We have both got off to a good start, (as always). We started on Monday and weighed in this morning. I have already lost 6lbs and my wife has lost 9. I know it is mostly water weight, but it is a good and promising start and I also know that I need to stop weighing myself, as I do get a bit obsessive with it.

I am off on leave from work this week, but start back next week and have a gym and sauna there which I intend to utilise. So exercise shouldn't be a problem.

So no doubt I will be on here over the next year or so and I will jump in where I can to help others.

    Thanks
    Dave

Heya Dave, welcome back! Good that you decided to re-commit to this way of eating. You're giving yourself the gift of better health if you do Atkins for life, as you seem to want to. Great!

Glad you have your wife with you on your Atkins journey. It's a great help to have support and encouragement... for both of you! Congrats on your losses so far!

            Re: Just started (Again)

Thank you for the support. It is the main reason that I came back here, just a great community of really friendly people helping one another in a common goal. (that sounds too pretentious doesn't it)

I think I am getting the energy rush now, seems to always take about 4-5 days with me. Wednesday was really terrible. I was yawning all through work and ended up going to bed at 9.30pm as I couldn't stay awake. I then slept fitfully all night through to nearly 10am. I'm usually 6.5-7 hours a night so over 12 hours in bed seems like some form of energy delpetion. Anyway feeling all the better for it now.

Scooter, re. the exercise challenge, I hate chores, but our daughter is moving out in the next two weeks into her own small apartment. This needs wallpaper stripping, painting, carpet laying, furniture humphing, furniture building, etc. So hopefully that wil be good exercise to come. Aside from that, I went out and bought a sports bag yesterday in order to take my kit to the gym in work starting on Monday. I'm going to take it slow to start, not done any exercise in over a year, (except for on swimming session). There are guys in my work who work out every day, they know the ins and outs and will help me develop a programme.

Baarb, thanks for the message of support. T in the Park is three days in Kinross in Fife. Friday night has Arctic Monkeys, Lily Allen and Bloc Party, so far. Saturday sees the Killers, Razorlight and My Chemical Romance plus others. Sunday has Snow Patrol, Scissor Sisters, Kasabian, The Fratellis, Paolo Nutini and Avril Lavigne among many more. It is set over seven stages with over 170 different bands playing over the weekend. It sold out pretty quickly and I think I was quite lucky to get tickets. (I'm not sure of the web site posting policy on here, but it has a simple one which you could guess from its name.) Someone described it to me as the most relaxing/exhausting weekend of the year. So really looking forward to it.

Once again, thank you for the support.

            Dave

Welcome Dave.. What is it with turning 40...that we realize that we have been miserable with the first part of our lives and its time to get serious to enjoy our second part.. I will be 38 in June and I keep telling myself at 40 I want to feel GREAT...

That is wonderful that you and your wife are doing this together.. I live with 3 thin people and hubby isn't working today because of the weather.. He wanted me to fix him Bacon, Eggs, and BISCUITS. I said NO WAY NO HOW.. I cannot cook biscuits right now... I can't resist them yet.. Needless to say He and my son are up the street at the local restaurant...lol

                  Re: Just started (Again)

I think 40 is just such a round figure (a bit like me) that society focuses on it, however, there have been a couple of articles in the UK press recently that have said, and I quote, "50 is the new 40". ???

I can understand where they are coming from. More and more 50 somethings are living life to the full. Many have finished mortgage payments and have a good disposable income. They say that they think back to when their parents were their age and don't want to be the fuddy duddy that they were, so want to live life to the full.

People are getting fitter and living longer so, even at 50, there may be 30 good years or more left to go, with nothing but leisure time. It's a far cry from say 50 years ago, when we didn't have the disposable incomes that we do today and there were never the opportunities to do so much.

As for 40, I think that if I don't get losing weight and getting fit now, then I may not live much past 50, if I even get there.

There it is, from my ramblings, it is a mortality thing. Live life to the full while we have the chance.

                  Deep!!!

                  Dave

PS Biscuits, that is cruel. Give him the recipe and stay ou the kitchen while he makes his own.

I agree with everything you said.. One day Mrs. Edwards (her husband is running for president and she has cancer) was on Oprah show.. She said my motto is to LIVE until I DIE.. and I knew that I wasn't doing that.. So that has been one part of my getting myself healthy

Welcome back Dave, I know how it feels to be 40 and close to 300 but this time last year I was 400 something. So I know if I can do it you can too. I can hear 210 calling my name. Lets get there together this year.

                            Re: Just started (Again)

Thanks again. Weighed in this morning I've lost 10lbs since Monday and my DW has lost 12lbs. The first week results are always the inspiration I need to keep going.

Start back to work tomorrow after two weeks off and I am going to get my gym bag organised so I have no excuses. I'll be taking it slow though to begin with, don't want to put myself off by aching for three days. I'm going to try for Mon/Wed/Fri this week and up it from there.

Bradybunch, sounds like some kind of a challenge. I haven't been 210 since I was 21, 18 years ago. and even then I wasn't as fit as I had been. Lowest weight I have been as an adult was 178lbs, but I felt too thin then and not much muscle, so 210 sounds good. 224 is the lowest I've been in 10 years and I was heavier before then as well. 210 with some muscle mass sounds REAL good.

OK 10lbs down, now at 292, it's only 82lbs to go, and in a year. I will keep my GW lower than this just to push me, but if I get there and feel fine, I may be quite happy. I'll just have to wait and see.

Sillygirl, I am really looking forward to the music festival, another sort of mid life crisis. But I've never camped before and I am really looking forward to letting my hair down.(All 1 inch of it). The only problem being is I will obviously be off Atkins for that weekend and perhaps for the two weeks after, if we go on holiday, but that is the first goal and I can't wait.

                            David
