Hi ALL !!! I am a newbie to this board. I want some suggestions whether i can start Atkins diet or not. In April 2006 i weighed 147lbs and my height is 5'6". I was on a low fat diet along with vigorous and regular exercise. I used to also swim twice a week. I reached 133lbs in august 2006 after which i could not exercise as i developed shin pain.I cannot do cardio exercises but i can do strength training. I stopped workout from october 2006 and i am still on low fat diet and have maintained my weight till today. Though my weight is correct for my height my lower body is plum. My target weight is 120lbs. With the low fat diet and no workout i am only able to maintain my weight but not able to reduce further. I read about Atkins diet on the web and came across this board. Read through the forms which provided with a lot of information about this diet. I am a rice eater since childhood. I eat 1-1 1/2 cups rice once a day. I am interested to follow Atkins but in the long run(after say 6 month) i will surely adopt back to eating rice. So what i am confused is all the effort spent on this diet will be lost when i start eating rice again. So is it that life long i will not be able to eat rice? I want to know how fast will the weight regain be? I am in a situation in which i can't workout to loose weight and need some diet to lose weight. Please provide suggestions. Your suggestions will be valuble for me. Thank you.

Re: I am new and confused about starting Atkins Diet!!
Well first off, Atkins is not a "diet"--it is not a quick fix, but a way of eating meant to be followed for a lifetime.
If followed correctly, assuming that your CCLL (critical carbohydrate level for losing) is high enough, and assuming that you are not allergic or have food sensitivities to rice, you may be able to add brown rice to your diet, if you so desire. You might say, "how can I be sensitive/allergic to rice? I eat it everyday." By cutting out most carbohydrates on induction, we begin the process of finding which good carbohydrates are suitable for our bodies. For instance, I used to eat potatoes every single day. I loved them! I recently tried a small piece of baked potato and ended up with severe abdominal cramps. Often the foods we love and are addicted to are the ones that cause us problems. I'm not saying that you will neccessarily be sensitive to rice, but it is very possible.
If you are interested in truly following Atkins for a lifetime, please pick up a copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution and read it! It explains why/how the plan works, and it explains the various phases of the plan. Atkins is more than induction.
If you are looking for a "quick fix", Atkins is not the solution.START 8/16/06 @ 270+~MG1: 220-12/2/06~MG2: 210-1/07~MG3: 199-3/2/07~MG4: 190-4/27/07~MG5: 180-7/04/07~GOAL: 170

Welcome to you AsianGirl.
I'd ditto everything Juli said... and would underline that Atkins is not a quick fix. It's good advice that you read the book before making your decision. Before and after:

Hi Asian girl! Welcome to the board. I too agree with what Julie said above. In addition, if following the Atkins style of eating, eventually you would be eating rice/grain again, but only whole wheat, not white!
