  • My long introduction

Well here I am, hi y'all! I live outside of Detroit if that matters.
For the past few weeks I have been testing out a low carb diet to see if I would be mentally capable of going on Atkins and it looks to be good. I'll be starting induction within the next couple of days so wish me luck.
Right now I weigh slightly under 300lbs... 294lbs to be exact. On May-Day I cut carbs from my diet to see how things would go and lost 15lbs, wow what a revelation, I can't wait to see the results I get on the actual Atkins plan of healthy eating.
A few years ago I topped out at around 350lbs or so. I purchased a bicycle and started using it to commute to work once or twice a week in order to get some exercise in. After a while I became hooked on bike commuting and gave up my car to be a full time bicycle commuter one year ago this month. Riding 20-25 miles per day depending on the route and riding through the winter months (which was quite fun) I managed to lose a signifigant amount of weight. But my weight loss stalled right around 300lbs. Now I am changing my diet from frozen pizza and popcorn every night to healthier foods and will begin by going on the Atkins diet.
I'm one of the type of person who will post ALOT in a few days and then post nothing for a few weeks, so sometimes I'll get annoying, and other times you'll wonder where I am at. But rest assured I'll be reading on here for support and likely asking many questions as I am a person who seems to need clarity on everything, just ask my wife!

Warm welcome to ADBB pj7! Sounds like you mean business re weight loss, which is great. The right mindset is half the battle won from the start.
Good for you incorporating cycling to work in your daily routine. Exercise is soooo necessary to successful weight loss and, more importantly, maintenance.

Looking forward to reading of your successes.
    Happy Atkineering!

thanks for the welcome. The funny thing regarding cycling is: At first, I started cycling to work in order to lose weight, but now I want to lose weight so that I can enjoy bicycle commuting more.

Well done on your current losses and good luck starting on Atkins. We all need clarity when doing this. Ive done Atkins 3 or 4 times, even done the boot camp on here, but I still need advice and the people on here are great. They are so knowledgeable about all aspects of this Way of Eating and that come from years of doing it. You are about the same weight as me and I daren't even start cycling to work, and it is only five miles away.

All I would say about your cycling is that your body may be used to you cycling by now and while it is still a great cardio workout, you may need to add some other forms of exercise in to get the burn.

We are trying to get rid of one of the cars at the moment and I was going to start getting the bus. (Have already tried a months trial and worked out great). But you may yet inspire me to get a bike and cycle to work.

Welcome to the board.. I was expecting a huge long introduction since your title said that.. You haven't seen my letters..lol

You are off to a good start.. A friend of mine..her son has diabetes and he keeps it under control by riding his bike to work everyday..now its a good ways away...about 20-30 minutes by car. But it helps him and he doesn't have to take medicine.

There is a couple right now riding around the US on there bike to lose weight. You can read about them at LittleChanges.com they came to our town and are doing great and seeing the US.

Wow, pj, congratulations on your pre-Atkins loss as well as your decision to go for it with the Atkins woe

You might find you dont get the large intial loss many heavyweights do on starting induction eating because of those 15 pounds already gone, but I am sure that the change in eating plus your cycling will make you a big loser!!

See if you can get some weighlifting in too somewhere, as I read that does the most to resculpt body shape.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Welcome PJ! I think you'll like this woe...very clean and healthy and you don't end up with that sluggish feeling, still wanting more. I breeze by the frozen convenience foods aisle in the grocery stores now, and don't even give it a second thought. In fact the thought of frozen pizza and popcorn now kind of makes me sick!
A lot of people have a hard time around day 4, so watch out for that.
You came to the right place if you have a lot questions....!
