I'm new to this forum. Found it while looking up articles against the Atkins diet (I like to read them since those authors' prejudices against Atkins really stand out).
I'm 51 y.o., male, and started about the middle of April of this year ('07) at 307lb. As of this writing I'm at about 285lb. It varies from day to day, but I still like to use the scale daily.
The reason I'm on Atkins is this;
in April of 2005 I had a "cardiac event", so called, where there was no damage to the heart muscle at all, but I still needed a stent to open the artery with the blockage. Since that date, I've quit smoking, and now only have one a month just for the flavor of the cigg...I'm pretty proud that I can do that after smoking at least two packs a day for the last 30-odd years. Necessity is the mother of habit in this case, and I'm now convinced that smoking isn't an addiction, but just a habit that's hard to break since I can have one a month without inhaling (forgot and inhaled once, and it just about killed me LOL). I also started to lose weight by using Dr Dean Ornish's book about being a vegetarian, but found I was starving and had to binge often enough that it didn't do much good to diet that way.
About the first part of April, I decided that if the weight didn't come off soon, I'd probably have another "episode" and that would be the end of me. I decided that either the Atkins diet would work, or I'd die trying.
As of now, my blood pressure has gone down, and I plan to get my cholesterol checked soon to see where it is...although I expect to see it lower than it was previously.
I'm well on my way to my goal of 170lb (I think that was my weight sometime in my freshman year of high school!) I've not been able to do artificial sweeteners on the Atkins diet, and I think that's because of the Cephalic Insulin Reaction thing. Doesn't bother me now tho. I can pass on all sweets and enjoy my six strips of bacon and four eggs every morning, with my pork rinds dipped in sour cream, and either chicken thighs, breasts, or wings, or a good sized steak for lunch, and I usually skip dinner or just munch on the pork rinds and either mustard or sour cream. I have promised myself that when I reach 200lb, I'll do one day of sweet stuff and chinese food, and then get back on the wagon to finish that last 30lb.
Wow that was a mouthfull! Hope no one got bored reading that. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!
