  • Brand New Newbie intro and help needed

Thank you to everyone who is taking the time to read this.. it is long and I am very lost and need so much HELP...
My husband and I are going on a reduced carb LIFE.. We are TRYING not to think of it as a diet, but a whole new way of life. I have not read the carb books or heard much about the Adkins diet, except I know my sister was on it once and she said it was hard, but she lost 27 lbs, and dropped 4 pant sizes but she went off it gained her weight back but not her pant size???
We are going to TRY to do it similar to the Adkins diet which means just green veggies, and meat items for the first two weeks. Then after that we are going to allow ourselves so many carbs per day.

    I have some questions.

    1. Are you allowed any carbs the first two weeks?

    2. How many are you allowed after the first two weeks?

What is considered unhealthy? I keep reading that you must have carbs and I figured up my calorie diet and did all the number crunching and found I should have around 200 carbs per day to be on a healthy balanced diet?

I weigh 145 and I would like to lose 15-20 lbs

My husband weighs 280 and would like to lose 50 lbs (for his first major goal).. I think 190 is his “should be weight for his height”

I also have children.. We are going to use better cuts of meat for all around healthy for everyone, we are going to serve carb dishes to our children but not as much as we have been.. Besides our meat our entire diet was carb galore. Before our 2 or 3 side dishes were all carbs, now I will server them one carb dish (potato or pasta) then the others will be Green veggies and things of that nature.

My youngest daughter is 10 and she is bigger than I am, which means she needs to learn to eat better NOW and that will help her later in life.

My next question is for someone who has been on this type of eating for awhile and what is required?
I mean you can’t live carb free forever can you? Is that healthy? But you can live reduced carb ? What is the amt of carb you should take in after u reach your desired goals?

I guess I should buy the book, but we are starting the change tomorrow and need a few answers that will help me get on our way.. I ve been on the Adkins recipe thing and took a lot of recipes off and I have my shopping list all made up and all carby foods put in the basement on shelves.

So.. any help will be great.

Also.. This is what our meals will look like basically

    Eggs and Bacon/sausage for Breakfast

Cheese and Summer sausage for snack

Some type of egg dish for lunch or a green salad

    Veggies and dip for snack

Meat (lean cuts), green veggie, salad, and we are debating about fruit.. Everything I look at online says so many different things.. What are the best fruits?

Also I looked at Frozen veggies today (green like brussel sprouts) why is it 9g of Carbs? Is frozen not what I should buy?

Also the exercise will be limited to a walk. I have to try to strengthen myself up before I can do any type of exercise.

I can’t even do a set up not because of weight, it’s just that I hurt a lot. (poor excuse) I’m just out of shape entirely.

also where do i go on here to ask questions like this?
for future reference, i am already thinking of a couple more but ill stop now.

    Thanks Dawn from Michigan……….

    I have some questions.

    1. Are you allowed any carbs the first two weeks? 20 net carbs during Induction that will last no less than 14 days.

    2. How many are you allowed after the first two weeks? this depends on whether you stay on Extended Induction or move up the rungs (phases).

What is considered unhealthy? I keep reading that you must have carbs and I figured up my calorie diet and did all the number crunching and found I should have around 200 carbs per day to be on a healthy balanced diet? unhealthy is going to be when you are eating enough carbs to make you fat. i would just about guarantee you, you will not be able to eat 200 carbs per day without gaining weight.

I weigh 145 and I would like to lose 15-20 lbs do 2 weeks of Induction then move up the rungs which will be adding carbs.

My husband weighs 280 and would like to lose 50 lbs (for his first major goal).. I think 190 is his “should be weight for his height” do 2 weeks of Induction and see how it goes from there.

I also have children.. We are going to use better cuts of meat for all around healthy for everyone, we are going to serve carb dishes to our children but not as much as we have been.. Besides our meat our entire diet was carb galore. I mean you can’t live carb free forever can you? Is that healthy? But you can live reduced carb ? What is the amt of carb you should take in after u reach your desired goals? the book clearly states that this is a way of eating for life but what many many people fail to grasp is that this is not a "no carb" diet. i would suggest, before you do anything else or move ahead, get the book and get informed about the issues you are asking about. the book says it best. the amount of carbs will be determined by your body as you progress. some can have 40 a day, some only 30 and then there are some who can eat upwards to 100 + net carbs per day without gaining.

I guess I should buy the book, but we are starting the change tomorrow and need a few answers that will help me get on our way.. I ve been on the Adkins recipe thing and took a lot of recipes off and I have my shopping list all made up and all carby foods put in the basement on shelves.

    Veggies and dip for snack

Meat (lean cuts), green veggie, salad, and we are debating about fruit.. Everything I look at online says so many different things.. What are the best fruits? fruits will come later. you need not worry about those at this point. after reading the book that you are going to buy, you'll understnad this more fully

Also I looked at Frozen veggies today (green like brussel sprouts) why is it 9g of Carbs? Is frozen not what I should buy? fresh is what you want to go for, if at all possible. i understand cost of feeding family and such but fresh is the way to go and what is recommended.

Also the exercise will be limited to a walk. I have to try to strengthen myself up before I can do any type of exercise. exericse is non negotiable, as you will also read in the book. start where you can but strive to do more.

I can’t even do a set up not because of weight, it’s just that I hurt a lot. (poor excuse) I’m just out of shape entirely.

also where do i go on here to ask questions like this? there are a host of forums for you to post in . health issues go in the Health Chat forum, fun and silly stuff can be posted in Chit Chat. for the most part, as you are just starting out, you will most likely want to post in the Induction forum.
for future reference, i am already thinking of a couple more but ill stop now.

      I have some questions.

      1. Are you allowed any carbs the first two weeks?20 carbs

      2. How many are you allowed after the first two weeks?
it depends...if you wish to continue on extended induction/OWL.

What is considered unhealthy? I keep reading that you must have carbs and I figured up my calorie diet and did all the number crunching and found I should have around 200 carbs per day to be on a healthy balanced diet?
OKAY...for this lifestyle of eating...200 carbs are a huge no no...basically what I have found for most people (not myself-I'm on OWL) don't have more than 100. Which is still ALOT in my mind. I stay currently around 30-35 a day. And I struggle sometime to get that many. You really really need to get the atkins book, and read it. It will benefit you in so many ways!

I weigh 145 and I would like to lose 15-20 lbs

My husband weighs 280 and would like to lose 50 lbs (for his first major goal).. I think 190 is his “should be weight for his height”

This will be great for the WHOLE family! It will be healthy for your daughter and she won't even know it AND you can teach her a healthier way to eat for her future!

My youngest daughter is 10 and she is bigger than I am, which means she needs to learn to eat better NOW and that will help her later in life. TOTALLY AGREE!

My next question is for someone who has been on this type of eating for awhile and what is required?
I mean you can’t live carb free forever can you? Is that healthy? But you can live reduced carb ? What is the amt of carb you should take in after u reach your desired goals?

YOU NEVER ARE CARB FREE!!! You are carb-reduced. Once again the book will be sooo benefitical! Check it out at the library...trust me, they have copies! That is where I got mine from! I check it out time to time when I need to read another chapter over.

Eggs and Bacon/sausage for Breakfast good

Cheese and Summer sausage for snack good

Some type of egg dish for lunch or a green salad good

Veggies and dip for snack CARROTS ARE NO NO... FYI., BROC. AND CAUL. GOOD.

Meat (lean cuts), green veggie, salad, and we are debating about fruit.. Everything I look at online says so many different things.. What are the best fruits? NO FRUITS! NO NUTS! DURING INDUCTION...

Also I looked at Frozen veggies today (green like brussel sprouts) why is it 9g of Carbs? Is frozen not what I should buy? I STAYED AWAY FROM BRUSSEL SPROUTS TIL' POST INDUCTION, PERSONALLY.

Also the exercise will be limited to a walk. I have to try to strengthen myself up before I can do any type of exercise. START SLOW AND YOU WILL GET THERE. 1 IS BETTER THAN NONE!

I can’t even do a set up not because of weight, it’s just that I hurt a lot. (poor excuse) I’m just out of shape entirely.

also where do i go on here to ask questions like this?

YOU CAN SOO DO THIS! PLEASE READ THE BOOK. YOU WILL HAVE AWESOME RESULTS IF YOU DO IT THE CORRECT WAY! WE ARE HERE TO HELP AND YOU WILL LOADS OF ADVICE FROM EVERYONE. JUST STICK WITH IT AND CHECK BACK OFTEN!! BEST OF LUCK TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!! REMEMBER TO TAKE MEASUREMENTS AND STARTING PICTURES!! YOU WILL BE AMAZED WITH THE CHANGES!!!

Re: Brand New Newbie intro and help needed

Dawn and husband....Best wishes to you both. You've been given great advice. As you read the book, devise a plan for yourselves that incorporates Atkins into your unique life-syles. Make plans on what to eat using the acceptable list, supplements, exercise and take your measurements. For me the key to grasping this WOE was to change my attitude. Be positive about the wonderful foods you can eat, the new recipes and the healthy changes you'll be making. Don't compare your weight loss with each other or anyone else. Everyone has different body types, metabolism and loses at their own speed. You can do this and as you feel healthier, lose inches and become comfortable with the program....you will love this new life-style.

The ADBB is filled with people who are sharing their inspirational stories, photos, and giving advice on how they have made Atkins work for them. Get involved in challenges, make friends and enjoy this new WOE (way of eating). Best wishes.

Dedication gives wings to our dreams and keeps them in flight! In One Word...COMMITTMENT.

Hi Valens! Welcome to the board. You have the right attitude in saying this is a change in lifestyle. It's not a temporary thing, eating this way will break you of your carb addiction and allow you to become healthy and lose weight. I'm glad you got the book, there is no "sorta of" eating this way. Dr. Atkins was a brilliant man and it has been proven time and time again that this method works. As you go along, eventually you will be eating from every food group. It's about good vs bad carbs. Also, it's great you and your hub are doing this together! Best of luck to you.
