  • letting that slim girl out

    Hi all,

I have been on the atkins diet now for a month. So far lost 11 pounds but keep cheating grrrr.

Ideally I would love to lose 50 pounds, I am my own worst enemy though

I live in Wales, UK, where summer has decided not to come so its rainy and cold and I want comfort food all the time. All the things most forbidden, it is also hard to find some of the great sounding things that are available in the USA.

I would love to find someone to chat to about all the issues that go with being a single mum, cooking for two weight concious teenage girls and wrestling with my own body image.

I guess I use food as my reward as I am often lonely, how on earth do I break this habit? Any advice would be welcome.

Anyway I love this site and all the inspiring stories, I am soo pleased to find others like me

Re: letting that slim girl out

Hi there. GaynorA here from Newquay in Cornwall. Welcome to you. Hmmm ... the cheating thing doesn't really work on Atkins. Because you are essentially changing your body chemistry, jumping back and forth from high to low carb is putting your body into all sorts of turmoil (picture it saying: "What the ******** are you DOING to me woman!!!"). So, my suggestion would be to make sure you have stuff you can eat easily accessible. That way if you get the munchies, you've got something you can legally eat. We'll get to the emotional eating cycle later - but for now you kinda need to position yourself to stick to induction for a couple of weeks. You've lost 11lbs, even with the hopping around a bit. So well done you. But .. imagine what that could have been if you hadn't had those tempting 'lil bits. Let's face it ... you probably only had a tiny bit anyway 'cos you felt bad about breaking Atkins. Not worth it really. Go day by day. Eat as much as you need to, within your carb limit. We are here for you. Keep going for it yeah!!! Best thing ... the cravings will soon subside if you stick to induction. Honestly ... they will! Lotsa luv to you.

Goal weight: 80 kg (176 lbs)

    Total loss = 8 kg (17.6 lbs)

      Hey Fawn,

11lbs off so far is a real result! How satisfying to know that this WOE works!!

I'm new here too! Today is day 1 for me on both the diet and this forum!
Your post was really touching - while I don't have any children I share your sentiments about comfort eating due to lonlieness and boredom.

As far as your 'weight conscious' girls go - this is something really positive for all of you. Not only will they see that you are able to eat 'real' food on this diet - they hopefully will pick up on the oh so common misconception that low fat food is better for us! Fat isn't always the enemy and I think the more educated your girls are about wise food choices, will equip them for later lives and hopefully mean they are able to look after their own children and manage their own weights.

Best of luck - and stop cheating!!! Just remember all those reasons you have chosen to do this the atkins way and if that fails count to 10 slowly before you put anything in your mouth.
      xx

Thankyou so much for the words of encouragement. I know you are right and I mustnt cheat. I think I need to go back to the really strict induction and see if it makes a difference.

          Hi Fawn! Welcome to ADBB!

Hey, there's nothing wrong with comfort food! You just need to find Atkins friendly comfort foods!

Why not start a journal on here? I, too, thought I was going to have to go it alone until I started mine. The members here pop into each others journals like mad and it's so much fun! I've managed to meet some really great people that way. Hope to see you there!

I wish you the best of success!

            Hi, fawn4n! Welcome aboard!

As Paula said, there are Atkins friendly comfort foods. I have the same problem, so I went to Linda's recipe site (http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/index.html) and there are all kinds of casseroles and yummy comfort foods to make! Great stuff.

            Good luck!

Re: letting that slim girl out

Hi again. How's it going today? I know ... isn't it frustrating seeing all those wonderful low carb goodies in the USA but not easily finding them here in the UK. BUT!!! I saw a site advertised on ADBB yesterday: http://www.lowcarbmegastore.com/ - it's a low carb company based in the UK. How cool is that. Just remember to read the specs though yeah. A lot of these "so-called" low carbs have hidden stuff. I'm going to check some out.

Hey there Fawn. Greetings to you from wet and MURKY Newquay. And if the weather forecast is correct, I'm guessing it's wet and murky Cardiff too. Just thought I'd pop in and say hellooooooooooo. Lotsa luv to ya. Hope all is going great.
