  • Ever get tired of defending Atkins?

I have to get something off my chest (other than weight hahaha).....

I'm so tired of defending Atkin's diet to co-workers, friends and family. What they don't understand and I think many of you will probably agree, this is actually EXTREMELY healthy for me. I had been in such a junk, fast and fried food marathon for way too long. Me eat a green vegetable? HAH! But, for the past month while on induction, I am actually eating REAL FRESH VEGGIES and gasp, FISH. Salad daily too. Loving every minute of it as well. Don't forget water, water and more water. I used to have the opinion that water is what killed the patient.

Once I realized how much healthier my menu was, I couldn't wait for the next person to *warn me* of the dangers of Atkins. LOL! I am SO READY to defend. I've never felt so good before and am pleased as punch with the results and my new menu. Both scales are still packed up but pulling three pairs of old *new* pants out of my closet and being able to completely zip and button them after one small week -- made all the difference to me.

I actually look forward to Sundays. I cook up all kinds of induction goodies and stock my fridge well. What is so amazing to me is that I can walk past the cokes, sweetrolls, ice cream bars, cookies, etc. I keep for my kids.

    Yeah, it gets old.

I work in a boutique and lots of customers are starting to notice the weight loss. Of course when a person sees someone who has lost weight, what is the first thing they ask? How'd you do it? When I would say Atkins, their face would drop and other body language showed their disapproval even if they didn't verbally denounce it. So, when people ask me now I just say I have cut out the junk and exercise more. It's the truth without being specific.

People are so damn goofy sometimes.

I'm "in the closet". I haven't told many people at all that I'm doing this because I don't want to have to argue. I figure that I'll lose the weight and when people go "wow, how did you do it?" I'll tell them then.

I recently had a coworker say "That'll kill you." I said "What did you just say??" She repeated herself. I simply stated to her "You haven't read the book have you?" She said no and I began telling her about it. Now she's going to buy the book and maybe give it a shot! I get really defensive when people spout off whatever they think is true. I am not the type to sit back and let them think that. I school them. I'll never get tired of defending Atkins. He is my lifesaver.

Yeah .. I agree with the much healthier bit. Before Atkins I was bread, bread, bread, starch, bread, chocolate and cake. Now it's fresh veggies and salad. Home cooked meals. My skin looks better. I feel ALIVE.
So many of the people who have criticised Atkins to me have said: "Oh ... that's the diet where you don't eat any carbs". I take great delight in correcting them. At one point I thought I ought to work on commission 'cos so many people started Atkins when the saw the weight dropping off me. I'm sure many of you have had the same experience. It's all negativity till they see you shrinking in front of their eyes and glowing - then it becomes a different story.

Re: Ever get tired of defending Atkins?

For me I tell people that I don't eat sugar or refined carbs. I do eat unprocessed meat/dairy/vegetables and fruit. And I drink loads of water. Everyone seems to impressed with this - I just don't mention the 'A' word. To be honest I've found that most people are just not interested enough to go further into any detail other than the above. Its enough to satisfy their curiosity.

Re: Ever get tired of defending Atkins?

Some people are just ignorant and can't help it. I always tell them Atkins is my way of life now. Some roll their eyes but most are intrigued and want to ask questions and learn more.
The simple truth is I eat way healthier now than I ever have and that is the main reason my medical issues have gone bye bye. Thanks again Dr. Atkins.

Re: Ever get tired of defending Atkins?

I get quite tired of people saying 'oh you look great' but then when I say I'm on Atkins they react and start preaching me.

As Julie said somewhere a while ago people think it is great if you say you've give up refined carbs and sugar - 'wow, how impressive' etc, but then when you say it's Atkins they are still shocked.

I always say I'm on Atkins specifically (I didn't at first) but I think Dr Atkins deserves the credit and people (who might need to lose weight) need to know the truth!

Too right. Couldn't agree more. I get a bit sad sometimes because I see very large women on telly who are trying to get stomach band surgery on the national health service. And I wish I could just give them a big hug and tell them about Atkins. Because of all the negative media coverage they are too afraid to try Atkins. And their lives go down the toilet or they end up having invasive surgery because of it. My heart just goes out to them, you know??????

Yep I know what you mean. There was teenage girl on TV a while ago who had weight loss surgery, I can't remember what kind, and it worked at first, but her progress was slower than expected because of cheats and stuff. This kind of thing - though good for some, doesn't seem to address emotional eating.

I keep wanting to tell large people about Atkins, but I would have been very annoyed if that had happened to me...

Re: Ever get tired of defending Atkins?

I get fed up with defending my WOE sometimes. Recently at a family gathering my brother started blasting me about it and my father (who from time to time follows this WOE) whipped out all of his Atkins knowledge and set my brother straight.

The worst part is that I work in a restaurant and my coworkers are just really not all that supportive, including one of my best friends! They keep offering me fries and stuff and I laugh at them... but I've had people turn around and tell me "You're going to die of a heart attack and then your diet isn't going to be so great then".

When people really get on me, I look at them and tell them "I only drink water now, a least gallon a day actually. I'm not dependent on caffiene and have stabilized my blood sugar to the point that I don't crave anymore. I don't eat junk food any more, I don't fill up on sugar. No more fried food, no more processed breads and junk. You've seen me sit here and eat salads and veggies, when have you seen me do that before? And this plate in front of me, my dinner.... can you honestly tell me this is worse than what I would have had before this WOE? Didn't think so, so back off"

                          That usually works

Not to hijack, but my biggest naysayer is leaving the country for just over a month, so I can't wait to show her my progress when she gets back!
