  • Hi Everyone! I Really need some Help and Advice!

Hi everyone my name is Kim and I am new to this whole thing. I am just about to turn 30 and just had my last son. I am so desperate to lose weight. I tried the Atkins diet yrs ago..but only made it to the third day. I am super determined this time only because I was told I could not do it. I need to lose 30 Ilbs. First I am asking to please help me understand the food I can and can not eat during Induction. Last time I was under the impression that any Veggies was completly out. Now I read it's ok. Plus there is no way in this lifetime I can give up caffine. I tired that once before and wound up in the hospital..I am not ashamed to admit I am addicted to caffine. However I have cut it down to just 1 cup of coffee a day. Will this still work with me doing this? I know I sound very un-informed with this diet and I really am. I am a wife of a U.S. soldier and just do not have the extra money to invest in the books and all the rest. All you military folk out there I know can relate. My husband is very supportive of this diet since he knows I am very determined to succeed however I am really excited to have found this website..I NEED YOUR GUYS SUPPORT TO!!! Please help me along let me know what to do..I am in on my second day..here is all I ate yesterday...

Eggs for breakfast, ham slices for a snack, lunch ..more eggs..dinner steak and cheese

Am I doing this right? I also had TONS of water

I am sorry if I sound so un-informed..I ahve been reading tons of people's success stories on her and I just so desperatly want to be one of those!

    Thanks to any replies! Kim

Hi there honey ... welcome to you. You sound really determined. I hope that you will do this because you deserve it, and not just because someone thought you couldn't do it. You really do deserve this my luv. You will feel healthier, more energised and all sorts. The book that you really need is the New Atkins Diet Revolution. Can someone else please give the date - 'cos it's slipped my mind and my book is packed in the garage (SOMEWHERE) at the moment - having just moved house. Do you have a 2nd hand bookstore anywhere near you. You can sometimes get them really cheap like that. I'll see what I can find for you in terms of a veggie list in the meantime - because you really do need 2 - 3 cups of veggies and salad stuff everyday (from the permitted list). Else you will end up feeling a bit ill because your body won't get enough very important nutrients. Welcome aboard my hon. It's good to have you here and we will give you all the support in the world. Lotsa luv to you. I'll pop back later if I can find a permitted veggie / salad list and type it in for you.

Hi Kim, welcome to ADBB. Glad you found us and that you are ready to change your life. I'm sure I'm not going to be the only one to tell you that you really really need to get the book. How about you this, now that you are drinking water, take the amount of money you would have spent on soda this week and buy the book instead? This is not a frivelous expense, this is the book you need to be healthy for the rest of your life. It really is worth it! The book is "Dr. Atkins New Diet revolution" 2002 edition.

We do have quite a lot of information here that will help you get started but reading the book really will give you a deeper understanding of how and why Atkins works and in the long run will really help you be succesful.

Here are a couple links to threads on this board that will start you off right.

      Getting started:
      http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=5781

      Rules of induction:

      Wallet sized acceptable foods list:
      http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=3982

As far as the book goes, you can often find it at used book stores, maybe even the library. New it's around 8 dollars if you get the paper back, you can also find it on the internet. Amazon has a ton of copies for a penny (with $3.99 postage usually) Here is a lonk for that:

        SOME BASICS FOR INDUCTION

(but please get the book as soon as you are able to. It’s very important because it explains the process and how you move up the carb ladder.)

Golden rule for induction: stay within 20g of carb per day, eating foods off the permitted list.

Up to 3 servings of salad veggies or 2 servings of salad veggies and 1 serving of cooked veggies. For ease, most people use 2 – 3 cups per day:

Types of salad veggies you can eat: lettuce, celery, cucumber, mushrooms, olives, peppers, radishes, tomato (the list in the book contains more …. But these tend to be the basics I use).

Types of cooked veggies you can eat: asparagus, aubergine, bamboo shoots, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, onion, spring greens, summer squash, turnips, water chestnuts (again .. the book contains more … this is a basic idea).

If you don’t have the book for recommended portion sizes, find a carb counter on line and double check to make sure you stay within 20 grams of carb per day during induction.

In terms of salad dressings, you can used your basic herbs (parsley, basil, coriander, dill, thyme, rosemary, plus oil and vinegar (but not balsamic).

In addition, you can have: 10 – 20 olives, half a small avocado, 30 ml sour cream or 90 ml unsweetened double cream, 2 – 3 tablespoons of fresh lemon or lime juice. (but if it impacts weightloss – adjust intake of these).

Coffee isn’t recommended by Dr Atkins. I’m not sure if you are drinking it black or not – but putting cream in will push up carbs.

Remember you are limiting carbs – but it’s okay to eat fat and protein. Any old protein will do (meat, fish, chicken, eggs – but make sure it isn’t in batter or coated in crumbs.). Also watch out for processed foods – some ham and other processed foods contain hidden carbs (check the packet … VERY important!!!). Obviously avoid stuff like pre-packaged meatballs that contain bread as a thickener.

NB: all cheese has some carb content – so factor it in yeah! Usually matured cheeses, cow’s and goat’s cheese, cheddar, mozzarella are okay as they are fairly low in carbs. (NB avoid ricotta, cottage cheese and processed cheese. I’ve also heard people refer to “American cheese” as being high carb).

Take a look at the recipe section on this board. There are some great ideas for induction legal foods. I'm sure other people will give you ideas about where to find other recipes as well.

I hope this helps you for the first few days. Please, PLEASE, try to get your hands on a book. I'm being a mother-hen here, but I do worry about people who cut out carbs completely. Dr A never supported that. It's very important to get your nutrients. Check out the vitanutrient forum for ideas on supplements etc.

All the best in the world to you.

Re: Hi Everyone! I Really need some Help and Advice!

The thing is that caffeine might keep you from losing weight, and if you don't see any results, you'll probably give up.. don't let that happen!!! I was addicted to Diet Coke as well, and when I started drinking my 120oz of water a day, I started to replace it, until I finally don't have any ... Don't worry.. You need to lose a reasonable amount of weight and if you make that effort, you'll be in maintenance before you know it!! And if by then you still want caffeine (which I don't think, because of the experience of successful atkineers).. you can have it at the end when you don't need to lose anymore weight..

Keep us posted in how you are doing. gEt the book (I got a mint condition hardcover copy at half.com for 75cents plus 3.99 shipping!!) ..... so there's no excuse! ... and for the induction list there's a pocket size induction rules sheet to print here ..

Re: Hi Everyone! I Really need some Help and Advice!

Hiya Kim and welcome aboard! Glad you came here for advice on low carbing the Atkins way. Seems the others have given you great tips for getting started so I'll only add my plea that you get the book somehow. Make sure you get Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution - 2002 edition. The 2002 edition was the last one that Dr A wrote in it's entirety before his death, so hasn't had "other pens" messing around with it. It's the edition this board goes by.
You might also take a look at the FAQs which will answer lots of queries and read the stickies in the Induction forum.

Remember to drink loads of water and do some exercise too.

Post lots and keep us in the know as to how you're getting along. We're behind you 200%!!

Hi ya Kim. How are you getting on today. I'm hoping you are enjoying adding some veggies and salad. It just makes food so much more versatile. Protein gets really boring after a while if you don't have a bit of CRUNCH to go with it. Luv to ya.

Hello and Welcome! There is so much variety and lots of yummy foods on the atkins plan. Once you get the hang of what is allowed for induction you will be fine and then when you head on into OWL ( ongoing weight loss) you can add even more goodies. Goodluck!
