Hi, Everybody. I am new to this, started the Atkins Diet two weeks ago and haven't seen any results. I saw from the scale that when I had salads I gained weight. Anyone Heard of this??? I am also a little confused about the fibre thing, I didn't read anything on subtracting the fibre carb, so with veggies I do the total carbs subtract the fibre carbs to give me an actual total of carbs? And what is One cauliflower considered, One little branch?? or the whole thing?? Oh, and one more thing, any one heard of those chocolates in the BULK BARN store (canadian) that are low carb, It says to subtract the "alcohol sugar" form the gross carb to get the net carb? Is this right or should I be staying away from it any ways? LOL, I swear I only cheated yesterday and today. I only bought 14 chocolates, as to limit my self, I was kinda discouraged when I seen no results from the atkins first two weeks of induction, of course, when I seen all the Gross carbs in veggies I pretty much didn't eat any these last two weeks. On that note "how is the Chocolate Ex_Lax for this Diet??? Anyones info would be greatfull, THANKS

    Hi VW-Girl and welcome.
Have you read the book? It clearly explains how many veggies and which veggies you should eat in addition to the meats & fish (fats & protein). I was pretty confused as well in the beginning and made some minor mistakes, but then somone on here recommended www.fitday.com it's a free online tool to track and monitor what you eat, your physical activities and weightloss progress. The food tool will help you calculate the net carbs.
As far as I underdstand, you shouldn't eat any protein bar product in the induction phase. And for sure no chocolate or sugar what so ever!

My recommendation is stay on "pure foods" the first couple of weeks - follow the book and you will see results. Buy Ketosticks to monitor if you are in Ketosis. And measure your body. Your scale might not show results, but the measurement tape might.
Again...read the book, make it your food bible. Good luck!

Hiya vw girl and welcome to ADBB!
I agree with SwissMiss... try to get a hold of the book: Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR). The one you want is the 2002 edition. That's the one the board goes by as it was the last one Dr A wrote entirely, before his death, so hasn't been interfered with by others.
Also, steer clear of processed foods, bars, shakes and sugars of any kind. You need to eat lots of natural fresh foods.

Have you any exercise planned? That's another huge help to weight loss.

Keep posting and let us know how you get on. We're behind you all the way!

Oh... I forgot to mention, that you also have to drink plenty of water. Atkins recommends min. 8 x 8oz glasses of Water. Drinking enough water is essential to "flush" everything out of your system.

Sally is right, excercising is key to loose weight. Excercising will make your metabolism work better and faster. It is also very important to drink before, during and after excercising in order to prevent dehydration. A nice side effect from exercising is that you will become happier because your body will release lots of endorphins - these are hormones that make us feel happy & content.

        Good luck & happy Sunday!

Thanks guys, I have read the books three times, but they are the older versions I think. Exercise, I get lots of that, I am digging out my bsmnt and mixing concrete for the footings of the house. Lots of work. How much weight are you usually supposed to lose on induction?? I did make up my own excel template to track my eating on my pocket pc. with all the carb counts but I think I will try the one you suggested. Oh, where do you get the Ketosis sticks?

          Thanks again every one.

Hey VW! Welcome to the board.

You can get ketosticks at any pharmacy. Sometimes you have to ask for them as they keep 'em behind the counter!

How terrific you've read the book 3 times! Great job!

Most people lose between 5% to 10% of the total amount they need to lose if they do a clean 14 day induction.

It's important to do as clean an induction as you can, because the amount you lose in the fortnight, will give you an idea of your level of metabolic resistance to weight loss also, very importantly, where you can expect your CCLL (critical carb level for losing) to be when you climb the OWL (ongoing weight loss) rungs.

                Re: New and Confused

Hi there. Welcome to you. Sounds like you are really trying hard. I would suggest that you go to the induction section of your Atkins book and follow it to the letter. You will see in there lists of "legal" foods that you can eat and quantities. Only eat what it says on those pages - nothing else (even if it does say "low carb"). All the best to you.
Start weight: 103.6 kg (227.92 lbs)
Goal weight: 80 kg (176 lbs)
                Now weighing in at ...... 95.6kg (210.32)
                Total loss = 8 kg (17.6 lbs)

You guys are all so fantastic, and look fantastic too. I still can't see how I can get enough vegetables in withought passing 20g of carbs. More so I need something to keep me regular, as I hadn't gone to the bathroom in a week. I know drink more water, but if I drink any more I will be up 10 times a night to pee. I already have to get up 2x in the night. HELP

                    Re: New and Confused

You should be eating 2 cups of "salad" veggies off of the list and one cup of "other veggie". Are you eating more veggies than that and still not able to use the bathroom?
You can take some psyllium husks (like metamucil) or flax seed will help. Just make sure it's sugar free and corn starch free. Go to a health food store and I'm sure you can get somethng there. Hang in there!

                      Re: New and Confused

I was eating salad every day which was basically lettuce, celery and radish, but I seemed to gain weight when eating it. Strange I know. especially when lettuce is like what 90% water. now I am even more confused because I went on that fitday website and the carb count is different than the carb count in the atkins book. Ahhhh, why is dieting so hard? =0(

I know, I know, it is hard. But you are strong and you can do this!

Are you eating lots of fat? Daily, you should be having about 30% protein, 60-65% fat and the rest veggie carbs. If you truly are gaining weight (as opposed to water weight or other) it would probably make sense that you're not eating enough fat. If you're not having enough fat, actually, a teaspoon or two of a good olive oil might stimulate your digestive tract too.

                        EDIT
