  • I'm Kate

    Hey everyone- Man am I happy to have found this forum! There's so much inspiration and knowledge here!

    Well, as the title says, my name is Kate. I'm from Denver, Colorado. I started the Atkins plan on Monday. I've tried it all- pills, drinks, Nutrisystem, Weight Watchers, counting calories- you name it. I've tried Atkins before but I must not have been doing it right because at that time I really had no energy and couldn't stand it. This time, I think it's because I'm eating more salads, I have more energy. I'm working out 4-5 days a week (i'm lucky to have a gym at work so I can do it at lunch) and doing my best to eat very few carbs. Seems that everything has them tho! I'm not having a problem not eating pasta or bread, but my one vice that I can't give up is my ONE packet of honey in the morning in my hot tea. I suppose if thats the worst thing, then I can deal with it. So far since Monday I've lost 2lbs, and I'm really happy with that. Interesting thing tho, I didn't each too much yesterday- less than I normally do- and worked out hard and I didn't lose any. I'm not beating myself up over it, but I think I probably need to eat more? Also, I didn't drink nearly enough water- so thats my goal today- MORE WATER!

    Thats about it here- if anyone has any advice or comments, I'd love to hear it. I'm 156 now and working my way down to 140- or lower. But 140 is my major goal so far. I'm 5'7" so I think thats a good weight.

    Thanks for listening!

      Hello Kate! Nice to have you join us here. And nice to see that you're already losing.

      You say you're eating less than usual... that's the Atkins appetite suppression kicking in, which is cool. But don't fall into the trap of eating too little. If you do, you run the very real risk of going into starvation mode where your body hangs onto weight because it thinks you're starving it. On the other hand, if you eat too much, you gain.... a dilemma! What's the solution? Easy: eat to feed your hunger only; no more, no less... and of course follow the plan. That way, success is virtually automatic.

      You're allowed three servings of sweetner per day on induction. Could you use one of those servings in place of the honey? Hard, I know...but worth it.
      Actually, the more you starve the "sugar devil" the quicker you'll see cravings disappear. Induction is a great time to kill it stone dead.

      Looking forward to reading of your successes!

        Sally, thanks for the support and encouragement- I know I really do need to kick this honey habit...Any suggestions on what I can replace it with? I've tried Equal, and it just isn't the same...Thanks again!

          Hi Kate and welcome!!!

          Have you tried chamomile tea? I'm *pretty* sure it is carb-free (but check first!), and it has a honey-like flavor on it's own. Add a packet of Splenda and you have a steamy treat.

          Hope to see you around the boards!

            Hi Kate! Welcome to the board. Congrats on the 2 pounds lost so far! You will be at goal in no time.

            RE: a sweetener, have you used Splenda? It doesn't have the after taste, and you can bake with it as well.

              Hi Kate,
              I just looked honey up in the carb counter...
              1tsp = 5.5
              1tbs= 17
              1 ounce = 23
              1 cup = 269
              single portion (1/2 z pkg = 11
              Hope this is helpful.

                Hi, Kate!

                Welcome aboard--sounds like you're doing well so far. My daughter's a honey fanatic, so I feel your pain. It is best to do a clean induction, could you talk yourself into giving it up just for 9 more days? Then, if you do, it might be easier to give it up totally. It's just that the honey could cause cravings, and we'd hate to see you suffer!

                2 pounds in 4 days is great! Especially since you don't have lots to lose. Post often and let us know how you're doing!
