  • a Hello and a question.

I've been lurking around here for a couple weeks now, so i figured I should say hello. I'm 34, mom to several 8-9 year olds. 5'7" , 143 pounds, down from about 146 a couple weeks ago, aiming for 120-125. That's about where all my old favorite jeans fit right.

Now for my question... and before I even ask, I know the best answer is "read the book!". I intend to, I promise, but it could be several weeks before I can drag myself to go get it, and I'm impatient. I figured it couldn't hurt to try what I can in the meantime. So the question is, why so careful about salt? While lurking I've noticed quite a few warnings about watching out for salt. Is this an Atkins thing or just a general health thing? Is it just because of the water gain it causes or is there something about the diet that it interferes with?

I sure hope it's just because of the water weight. It seems to be much harder for me to stay away from the salt than the carbs and sugar. I don't really care about the scale teetering back and forth 4 or 5 pounds, it's always done that.

    Welcome to Rattus!

Glad to have you with us!

There are several health reasons that one should avoid excessive intake of salt, but there are none that I am aware of that are Atkins specific. I know Doctors limit salt intake of people suffering from hypertension as it has an effect on blood pressure and sodium also causes one to retain water.

The average person with no specific health concerns regarding sodium needs between 1 and 3 grams (1000-3000 milligrams) of sodium per day. So if you land somewhere between those figures you shouldn't have too much to worry about unless a physician tells you otherwise.

Best of luck on your weight loss journey and if you need anything please feel free to give a shout!

Hi Welcome. Glad you've de-lurked and joined us. Glad you've made the committment to read the book, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, edition 2002. Its the best way to follow Atkins and get the best results.

Too much salt can lead to high blood pressure, swelling in the feet, legs, arms, fingers and retention of water. I always had swollen feet and ankles which made me feel uncomfortable and bloated.

Best wishes to you. Take your measurements, exercise, drink lots of water and enjoy watching the inches melt as you improve your health! I look forward to following your journey and seeing you succeed!
      Starting Date 3/12/04 285/165/145 - F

Dedication gives wings to our dreams and keeps them in flight! In One Word...COMMITTMENT.
