  • Very frustrated Newbie

    Hello all.
I am new to this posting. I am58 and female. I am an artist living in California with my husband and two canine children.
I have been enjoying reading all your statements of hope and encouragement.
It kept me going , but I remain frustrated.
I am in day 12 of a clean induction. My scale shows no movement, that is unless I go for a long, hilly walk. Then the scale shows gaining a bit of weight... each time!!!
I weigh everything that goes into my mouth. I am at or below 20g of net carbs, usually at 20 gross carbs. My calorie count is around 1200. I drink 6, 12oz glasses of water or herbal tea. I rarely use splenda. Any more H2O and I get over watering problems... dizzy etc.

What is happening with the scale??
I have the book and read it constantly. I use a computer program to chart every morsel of food(CalorieKing)
My goal is only 2lbs/week fir 20 weeks=40lbs

    Currently 180.4
    mini goal..169
    minigoal...159
    minigoal ...149

    Any Ideas?

I don't know why your scale isn't moving. I also understand the frustration that comes with it not moving. Let me start by asking yourself if you got measured before you started and if you have measured yourself since you started. Just keep on going and don't give up. You'll sucseed if you believe in yourself.

Sorry to hear about your frustrations...I've been there. But sometimes it's in the food and lack of water or even too much salt, hey, maybe even hormones, that cause problems. If you can post a sample of your daily menu, that might help give some of the experts here an idea how to help you some more. Oh, and exercise is another key to not losing sometimes because of muscle weighing more than fat, but don't stop exercising! Keep your faith, your goals, and post your menu so we can see how more to help.

Hi Babycrone and welcome to the board!

To add to what the others mentioned, did you get your bloodwork done before starting? If not you really should consider it - I had a major malfunction with my Thyroid that I had no clue about until I dragged myself to the doctor & he scolded me for not having a checkup with him since before the baby was born (over five years ago!). All I knew was that I couldn't lose weight no matter how hard I tried and I was exhausted and cold all the time. If you do get your bloodwork done, make sure they include "TSH" on the order form.

And you know, even if you don't have a thyroid issue it's still a good idea to have that bloodwork done so that when you go back next time you can compare the results.

Good luck to you and please hang in there until you can sort out what's wrong!

          Yes
I got my blood tested and I am waiting for the results. There are many symptoms of an under active thyroid and if that is indeed part of what is happening, at least it can be addressed.
My favorite meal so far is my evening meal.. strawberry Atkins shake with 4 ice cubes blended.

              Re: Very frustrated Newbie

Post a couple of days worth of menus for us (include how much of each item)...

This can help us determine if it may be related to what you are eating.

BTW, Atkins shakes are not legal for induction, plus frankenfoods are not good for the body anyway. Try cutting those out and see if there is a difference.

Welcome Babycrone! Glad to have you join us here.

Sorry to hear of your difficulties, but I'll second what the others have said. It could also be that you are not eating quite enough and you have gone into starvation mode. 1200 cals is considered a minimum for everyone. Try adding just a little bit more fat into your diet...even a Tbs of oil/mayo would be enough.

Also, many of us lose inches before lbs... takes the scale time to catch up. Or you could be building muscle, which when comparing size for size weighs heavier than fat... I mean... a can full of fat would weigh less than the same can full of muscle... so, if you're losing inches but gaining muscle, the scale might not move. Sorry if that's confusing.

Keep at it. If you do the plan properly and don't forget to add in exercise and loads of cold water, you'll do fine.

                  Re: Very frustrated Newbie

Welcome to the board! I ditto what everyone else has said. here's a link for you about caloric intake. While it doesn't matter so much for this way of eating, a person still can eat too little, or too much and defeat their efforts. I can tell you are 100% in this by the way you're charting every little morsel. This site does require some reading, particularly about the harris benedict equation.
                  http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/

Yes, post a few days of menus at the review my menu forum, but as others said, I suspect the shakes. You can also read up on sugar alcohols. These shakes and bars are loaded with them. While you can mentally believe the net carb amounts on the package, you are only fooling yourself. In reality, because of the sugar alcohols, you are consuming the whole listed carb amount.

It's all very interesting and scientific. Generally, plain old whole, fresh foods are best.

Post often so we can see your results!

Thanks for al the input. I was counting gross carbs not net when I ate the bars and shakes. A part of it was wanting to get more fiber......However, I will try it with out it for the next few days and see what transpires.

But, the shakes are not part of induction. What's the total carb count on them anyway? Your fiber should be coming from vegetables! We have a vegetable challenge coming up in October, I urge you to join it (plus, I'm running the challenge so I get to plug it).

Induction = 12-15 net veg carbs
                      OWL = 17-20 net

Keep those numbers in mind when eating your 3 cups of veggies each day!

                        Re: Very frustrated Newbie

I don't think that there are any sugar alcohols in the Atkins shakes. There are 6 total carbs and 4 grams of fiber. 6g Carbs - 4g Fiber = 2 net carbs. The bars do have sugar alcohols and funky ingredients with the goofy math in the nutrition facts.

Having said this, the shakes are NOT legal for induction and really shouldn't be used till closer to Pre-Maintenance or Lifetime Maintenace, if at all. Your carbs should be coming from nutrient dense, fiber rich, veggies. You really should post a specific menu so we can have a look.

                        Good luck!

I second what everyone has said.

Ditch the shakes and any other prepackaged foods.

Eat 2-3 cups of veggies today, including 2 cups of salad. WITH dressing.

Up your calories to about 1500.

Make sure you are eating enough fat. If you don't eat enough fat, you won't lose.

And hang in there. There are any number of people who don't lose on the scale in the beginning, and then suddenly drop. Measure yourself (shoulders, chest, waist, abs, hips, thighs, ankles, upper arms, wrists. Check the measurements every 2 weeks.

                              EDIT
