i may be new to this site, but not to this diet. i have some questions for experienced atkins dieters and i might as well tell my story. here goes:

In early march i found myself at a weight i never thought i'd be. i was out of work for about 6 weeks and didnt realize how much i was eating and the weight i gained. i also wasnt very active. it took a picture a friend took of me at the bar for me to realize how heavy i was getting. when i got home that night, i got on the scale out of curiousity and i was 250 pounds!!!!

im a 29 year old male and thats just not a healthy weight. i was embarrased and ashamed and i decided to do the atkins. i remember how hard it was in the beginning. man, those first few days were awful. headaches, hunger, everything. i wanted it so badly that i fought through every urge, figured out the food i could eat and stuck to it. i also drank 4 32 oz poland spring waters per day (one gallon). i was all over the scale too. DONT DO THAT! inches first, pounds later. thats how it works. regardless, i stayed on this diet for 31 days and i lost nearly 23 pounds. after that i reached a plateau and decided that was enough. i got back down to 220 pounds (which is still too much, but i am 5'11, not to mention i was always right around 238-240) and i saw huge differences, people did, compliments wherever i went, etc. i proceeded to spend the next 6 months keeping the weight off. not one pound gained back. i NEVER went back to certain things....regular soda, iced tea, nothing with sugar, no white bread anymore, hero's, rolls, etc. water only. gave up on the sweets. and what happens is this: you can cheat when you want, but limit it to the weekends. you need to have the discipline come monday to go back to doing the right thing.

    so thats my testimony.

my question is for experienced atkins dieters...

ive decided as of yesterday morning to start this diet again. gotta love the george foreman grill. anyway, can i expect the same results this time around as last time since its been over 6 months? when i set my mind to it, i do it. i wont cheat, it wont happen. i have the self control when motivated. so, under the assumption i do not cheat, can i expect the same weight loss results in the same time frame? im guessing not. im hoping so. i just am so proud for losing the weight, and even prouder for keeping it off all summer. if i can lose 20 more pounds ill be down to 205 and at 5'11 coupled with broad shoulders, ill look real thin.

anyone who doubts this diet, please dont. be patient and dont stay on it for too long.

i just noticed myself getting a little out of control over the past month. luckily i havent gained any weight back, but i figured its time to tough it out for another month.

    feedback appreciated

    Whew, you made it!

Welcome to the board. You have been successful eating the Atkins way, I see. I have to tell you that most people on the board do go by the book (DANDR), which doesn't include cheating on the weekends. I would encourage you to lose your final 20 pounds by seeing if you can do it cheat free.

Look around the board, join some of the challenges and gets lots of support!

oh silly girl. you misread that. what i said was AFTER i successfully finished my atkins diet in april, i then did the right thing for the following 6 months by only cheating on the weekends and going back to normal (not even atkins, jsut eating right) during the week. and thats how i found my way to keep the weight off.

      however

now as of yesterday morning i decided to do the atkins again for the next month. strict like i did it last time. when i did it in april i never, ever, once cheated and know i wont now either.

my question was, if you know, will the weight come off as easily again?

Oh, I get it now. If you are diligent, with no cheating, there's no reason you won't lose weight just as easily as last time. In your first post you are saying not to stay on this too long which is incorrect. Eating low carb should become lifestyle in general, not just when you've reached your goal. It's been proven time and again that the Atkins style of eating is a healthful way of eating which can lower your blood pressure and cholesteral.

I see that you've continued to stay clear of white flour and sugar.

HA, yeah. when i say dont stay on it for too long, i meant to keep your sanity. here is the thing though. after the initial diet there were several things i never touched again. SODA for example. i would drink pepsi, dr pepper, coke, whatever. iced tea and gatorade were favorites too. NEVER went back to that. all i drink is a gallon of water a day now. give or take a few ounces. all my bread intake became whole wheat. if i wanted a burger and fries, i'd do it on saturday. i barely drank alcohol before and now i never do. its pointless.
all i can say is right now finsihing up my second day im not in bad shape at all. yes, ive been eating ALOT in the past two days but obviously all atkins approved food.
its just a great feeling knowing not only have i done this before and done it with great sucess, im now doing it again and in a month or two ill ve at the weight i was when i graduated high school 11 years ago.
all in all its a god day!

Welcome and congratulations on your success! Isn't it a great feeling, to be in control of your eating!

I'm another advocate of a total lifestyle change when you get to where you want to be weight wise. It think it's far healthier than maintaining by having those weekend blowouts then back to strict Atkins weekdays (not saying this is what you do).
Good for you taking out the reknowned "nasties" like soda.

The closer you stick to the programme in maintenance, the better you'll feel, for sure.

No reason why you shouldn't be as speedily successful as last time, although some find it slower the second time around. Either way... by following the programme, you will get to goal!

HEY. thanks. yeah once i lost what i initially lost and heard the reactions from friends , family and co-workers coupled with the fact i wasnt losing anymore i stopped the diet. STOPPED being the operative word. i didnt quit, ya know? i figured out healthier ways of eating while still being able to "cheat" or whatever word you need to use.

              an example:

if i found myself having the chicken fingers with fries one night, i followed that with nothing but eggwhites, tuna, and salad with a gallon of water the next day. i never became, well lets face it, a total non self control slob.

my desire to do the atkins again was to knock off the remaining weight and be the stud i used to be. call me cocky, i dont care. its all about self confidence now.

as far as soda goes. a few months back i was forced to drink a diet soda (i dont even drink diet soda on this diet). i USED to always drink regular soda. anyway, i was in a situation where diet was all there was to drink and the person gave me regular on accident. i literally spit it out. IT WAS DISGUSTING! cant believe i used to drink that crap. it felt like someone pinned me down and jammed a box of sugar in my mouth.

              thanks for the kind words

Re: Yet another newbie, sort of

quick update for everyone! so, your weight is most accurate in the morning right after you pee right? judging by that if that in fact is the case, im down about 7 pounds since last monday (oct 1st) since i started induction which i cant complain about at all. this was only the second or thrid time i weighed myself since i started, so it was a nice surprise this morning. its also my birthday! 29 today (yuck). anyway, yesterday was a tough day to get through. man i was craving something sweet really bad. i dont crave anything fried since alot of the food on this diet is meat and cheese and stuff like that, but its the damn sweet tooth that gets me. luckily i didnt give in and just had some sugar free jello but that gets REAL old and REAL boring quick. its just that its so EASY to give in and grab a doughnut or a candy bar and its so DIFFICULT not to. but there is so much more reward in not grabbing it when you have a goal and something to really look forward to. i refuse (just like i did last time) to give in to temptation. im proud that i lost 25 pounds in april, im proud that i kept it off all summer, and im proud that im doing this freaking thing again and that ive gotton through 8 full days allready.

im just trying to figure out what to do in those situtions where you actually feel sick about the thought of ever eating another egg or piece of cheese again. i might go with just mostly salad today. hopefully 3 weeks from now im down another 10-15 pounds and IF that happens, ill be at a weight i havent seen since high school.

i cant believe that since i graduated high school in 96, i managed at my highest weight to put on 55 pounds in 11 years. thats RIDICULOUS!

alot of people always complain and cry about their weight, at least all of us here are actually DOING something about it!

Congrats Sparky on your 7 lbs lost since last Monday... and for staying strong and not caving when your sweet tooth reared it's ugly head.

If you find the thought of eating lots of eggs and cheese dismaying, why not vary it up a little? Here's a link to Linda's awesome low carb recipe site:

                    http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/index.html

The recipes with an asterisk are induction friendly.
