  • New in every way to Atkins

Goodmorning everyone, I am soooo new to Atkins, I just bought the Diabetes Revolution book by Atkins book a couple days ago and I want to get started but could use your guidance and tips on getting started.
I have just been diagnosed diabetic, with high #'s and they have dropped down considerably just by doing the old AMA diet. But was not happy with this diet because I felt my body could not handle that many carbs so after 2 weeks I started at least to cut back on carbs as of this morning I finally dropped 5 lbs. The carbs made my weight go up that much. SO, I knew I needed more fat and more protein. My hairsytlist told me about this book and I'm so glad I got it. Then I found this site.
You all seem so dedicated and determined to gain your health back and share with others. I hope to become like you, helpful and resourceful and very healthy.
For starters, where do I go on this site to see "How to get this ball rolling" 101. I'll read til I'm blue in the face but need to get started plus read. I'm raring to go.
I already drink a good amount of water and walk 1 hour non negotiable for me. I feel great on days I walk. Gets every part of my body alert and awake for the entire day.
I no longer am hungry, sleepy and I no longer have heart palpatations and shortness of breath. I went into hospital Dec.20 with chest back and arm pain and shortness of breath and found out I was in congestive heart failure :sadblinky . Got my stint put in loaded with plavix and I'm on 5 meds for High Cholesterol ~ 600 I think and triglycerides 1300. BP was@ first 247/150 it started to drop to180/120 before I came hope. Am on 2 BP meds. And on top of that, as if that wasn't enough. I found out I was a hidden diabetic. # were near 300's, A1C was 9.
So right now BP is 148/94. lowest in a while, I was excited to hear this # :joy BS. was 208 before eating yesterday, l34 before lunch and 138 before dinner. That is when Dr. at hospital told me to take readings.
A lot better than in the beginning. I am on Metformin 1000 mg. I have read this is the best one and Atkins says so as well.
I'd love to have your seasoned advice tips, help in anyway as I start on this way of life. I have no outside help because I am so new to this and have absolutely no one to ask questions to. Hope to find people in community or make new friends period who have been around the block with these or similar problems.
Thanks much for hearing me out.

        Hi Joy and Welcome, :wave

Please do join us over in the Diabetic Forum (canuck, IrishIrish and I are mods over there).

I noticed that you test your Blood Sugar before meals. Is this because you are a Type 1 Diabetic? If you're a Type II Diabetic, readings are usually taken after eating (2 hours), unless you're on Insulin.

Also, most Diabetics take what is called a fasting reading, which is done first thing in the morning, upon waking and before you do anything else.

I also know that you did post in the Diabetic Forum and I separated it from the thread you posted in. I put in a couple of other things in there that might help you. I originally thought you had the "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, Version 2002". But I see you have the Dr. Atkins Diabetes Revolution Book. It would be a good idea to have both. Plus, I suggested another book, Dr. Bernstein's Diabeles Solution, Version 2003. The following link has excerpts from the book:

It's great that you're checking out the entire Board, but please, as everyone has suggested, please come on over to the Diabetic Forum!!
