  • Very new , need all the advice I can get!

    Hi all,
Nikki here. I want to start and hopefully can get to the market tonight to get the foods to start the induction. First and foremost, does anyone take anything for appetite suppressing? I don't know if that is taboo here, just asking! Please don't kill me!
I know that I developed a nasty habit of stress eating and eating without thinking. Have two young toddlers, and one has Autism and that is where this habit developed. Daughter is making great improvements now and now I totally feel guilty about not dealing with my health so I can be here for years to come for them.

I weigh now 274 which is what I weighed when I was pregnant wiht my first daughter, (gained 80 lbs. with the birth of my first daughter), My heighest weight was 294 during the birth of my second daughter. I only gained 26 lbs. in the second pregnancy because I was on a diabetic diet.
Now I am back to 274 and really need to change so I am trying Atkins.

Any diabetics here? I am 32, fairly healthy, but always tired and not motivated to exercise, but I am going to make a change and hope to get results.

I do know that eating the wrong foods can make me even hungrier being a diabetic, something to do with the blood sugars and all.
I guess my next step is taking a pic and posting and I do want to make some friends here.
    Thanks,
    Nikki

Re: Very new , need all the advice I can get!

Welcome Nikki. Even though I'm fairly new to the community myself. This is my 2nd go around of atkins. First time I got pregnant but I'm pretty sure that's not a side effect.
As far as appetite suppression. You'll be amazed at how much you don't need anything other than eating the foods you're supposed it. It's a natural appetite suppressant. BELIEVE me. I was a major snacker. I ate late at night or basically anytime I passed the kitchen. lol
Now I don't even get that hunger or feeling of needing SOMETHING to fill the void.

My only issue with diabetes was when I was pregnant. But most of my family on my dads side are/were diabetics.

But the toddler/stress thing I can completely relate to. I have a 2 year old right now and a teenager. lol Double Whammy!

This board is great and will definitely help you if you hang around for the support. If you need some meal ideas check out Linda's site
I feed even the pickiest of eaters those meals and they love them.

    Good Luck on your journey.

      Thanks for responding!
So do you really just take the induction list to the market and buy as much and go home and follow a recipe and go for broke? !!!!!
Did you need any Atkins products to start. I will be on induction for a while .

        Hi Nikki,
welcome to the board. When you get into ketosis which should be within the first 3 or 4 days you will notice a huge difference in your appetite and your energy. You may have a bout of induction flu, but it is fleeting and you wont believe how wonderful you will feel on the other side of that. Old habits do die hard though so make sure you have a bunch of legal foods you can grab when the snacking urge hits. Make a menu, and then a shopping list and set some time aside to pre cook some of your meals. Be sure to go to the food forums for meals and snack ideas before you go shopping. You do not need and are strongly encouraged not to buy any Atkins product for this WOE, especially not during induction. Just buy real food. I cook up a pound on bacon in the oven and then put it in the fridge to crumble on eggs or salads. I also will make a bunch of hamburger patties, or chicken thighs and breasts to have.

Re: Very new , need all the advice I can get!

Congrats on starting this WOL. When you go grocery shopping you go with a list of items you will need for certain recepies/meals. This is what I would eat when iduction. Hope it helps.

Bunless burgers (ground beef or ground turkey, pepper jack cheese, sauteed onioins, tomatoe, lettuce, mayo, mustard, bacon)
Taco Salads (ground beef or turkey, shredded jack or cheddar cheese, sour cream, avocado, tomatoes, salsa)
Chicken breast, thighs, wings (make them any way you want. fried, steamed, grilled, anyway except breaded ofcourse)
Chicken soups (mix in celery, squash, cilantro, onions, tomatoes, cabbage)
Chicken salad (mix celery, onions, mayo)
Spinach casserole (steamed spinach with cheese, onions, toatoes and chile verde)
          Steaks (veggies on the side)

And then there are items like eggs, bacon, sausage, pepperoni, turkey, jicama that you can buy to eat as snacks for for breakfast.

You have a huge grocery list now. LOL!

Re: Very new , need all the advice I can get!

Thanks because I was just about to ask for a list before I go out to the store! The first burger sounds yummy.
See, the will power will be my thing. I just ate two turkey burgers with one piece of cheese, one squirt of ketchup. But my daughter's frozen mac and cheese was tempting . Took about three spoonsfull.

I do need the right stuff in here so I can snack on my own foods and not hers!

Thanks! I will look on the forum for ideas to take with me to the store. I think it's easier if the food is precooked or prepared.. I think I'm gonna miss fruit .

What's the induction flu feel like???

niki .. drink LOADS of water .. sometimes hunger is mistaken for thirst.
To elsys list I'd add Chicken Fajitas .. juts don't do the tortilla beans and rice ..

A really simple quick meal ...
Open a can of tuna in Olive Oil
Drain the oil into a dish .. add a little more from your store cupboard
Add some vinegar (white wine or malt) to the oil to make a basic vinaigrette
Open a bad of bought green salad .. pour the vinaigrette on it
                  Put the tuna on top
                  Hey Presto

Snack on cheese .. salami ..

IF you get cravings for sugar .. some pouring cream will help or a slug of diet cola but don't overdo the cola .. Dr A is anti aspartame.
                  Good luck

                    Nikki,

Don't sabotage your efforts by eating ketchup. Unless you bought some sugar-free, it's loaded with sugar! That's what made me think you were tempted by the mac and cheese.

Sugar is insidious -- it's everywhere. So read, read, read those labels and avoid sugar as much as you can. Good luck to you. I'm a newbie on this board, too, but it's filled with lots of help, resources, and very nice people.

Re: Very new , need all the advice I can get!

You'll definately find that when you start induction for the first day or so you may feel a bit ill.. not bad just different. This is the induction flu as we like to call it. It will pass but you will be amazed at how much you can eat and that you are not usually hungry. This is a very good thing. For at least the first two weeks I would stear clear of the atkins products they contain some "illegal" things in them and they can also cause cravings for candy, chocolates, ect. The first two weeks is kind of a crash course on how you should be eating the rest of your life. Stick to it. people have amazing results after the first two weeks. I carried the book around in my purse for those first two weeks and whenever I was shopping or had a question I pulled it out. Be prepared though... there are a lot of people in the world who will see you reading the book and decide to tell you their two cents worth. My best friend was one of them but now that she saw the results she thought she would try it but was not dedicated enoughh to do it. Bottom line is that this diet is easy once you get a grip on your eating and the things that put you out of control in the first place. And it works GOOD LUCK!

Re: Very new , need all the advice I can get!

Hi Nikki. Welcome. Here is a 'shopping list' that one of our members devised that you can print off and carry easily in your wallet:
                        http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...=shopping+list

I can't wait to read your posts after you've been on Atkins for a few weeks. If you do the program with a strict induction for at least two weeks, throw in some exercise and come here often for support...you are going to feel 100% better. When you have a craving for something not on the list...find a subsitute food that you can eat that is legal. In order to break a habit, you need to find something to put in its place. That's what worked for me.

I know you are a busy mom and its hard to find time to take care of yourself, but if you put some music on and do exercises with the kids or march in place or go for a walk, that will be benefitting you and them. I watch my granddaughter and she loves it when I play (its really exercising - but she don't know the difference) with her.

My advice is to read the book, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, edition 2002...come here often to surround yourself with others for motivation, develop a positive attitude about your new WOE. Measure so you can see the inches melting away and enjoy the friendship and the changes you are going to see and feel by doing the program. Best wishes!!

Welcome! You have gotten great advice from people who really know their stuff so all I'll say is you CAN do it, you really can! I will never forget my second night on Atkins, I wanted chocolate chip cookie dough so bad that I sat on the couch and cried. Can you imagine that? Crying over cookie dough? I did...for like an hour. When I look back, I think that was the turning point for me. Had I given in and eaten that cookie dough that night, I honestly believe I would not have lost the 80 pounds that I have. Whatever your cookie dough is, you can get past it.

Oh, and hang around here because these people will inspire you in ways you didn't know possible. I go wandering off sometimes, but I always come back.
