  • What brought me here

    Hi everyone,

I have been viewing this site since October. I have also participated in a few of the challenges as well. I figured that now is as good of a time as any to intoduce myself.

I am 36 yr old male from Philadelphia, PA. I have been married for 8 1/2 years to a wonderful wife, and have two fantastic little boys (ages 2 and 4 ). I had stayed around 305 lbs for a few years, then in the last two-two and a half years the hover weight changed to between 315 to 320. In November 2006 (320lbs), I thought that I was having a heart attack and went to the ER. Luckily enough it wasn't. I went on Weight Watchers right away and by the beginning of January I was back down to 305. I would and still do get tightness in my chest, but after alot of different test over the next couple of months, the doctors figured it was just anxiety, but they would continue to monitor me. They told me I had borderlin high cholestorol and borderline high blood pressure. In the spring my cardiologist put me on cholesterol medicine. So over the course of the spring and fall, I went back up to 320 lbs. In September, I started exercising some each day and by the time I saw my doctor in October, I was back down to 311.

In October 07 I had my blood chemistry done and was shocked by the results. My triglicerides were through the roof, My blood sugar was eleveated, my cholesterol had not dropped and I was considered obese. ( Basically, all the makings of Syndrome X). My doctor emailed me a prescription for new medicine to lower my tri, and told me to go on a low carb diet and that if I didn't lower my triglicerides, that I would be a prime canidate for a stroke or pancreatitus.

I started atkins that Monday, and stayed on the plan completely until the week before Christmas 07. I used a death in the family as an excuse to go off Atkins. (especially to drink). So for the last two weeks, I have been on and off Atkins. I weighed myself this morning and was not thrilled to see that I was back up to 277lbs. ( I'm hoping some or most is just water weight) I had been down to 268lbs the day I went off atkins. So starting today, I'm starting another clean induction and sticking with it. On the up side, I also know now that Alcohol is a major trigger for me, so I will probably just have to avoid it completely going forward. Getting healthy so that I could be here for my children, to have an impact in their lives, and help shape them into healthy adults was my motivator and driving force for me to start and follow the Atkins plan. I lost sight of that for a short while, but I have recentered myself and know that I have to do this. Sorry for the long story, but thanks for reading it.

Welcome, Brian. It sounds like you know Atkins works for you, and you also know where your weaknesses are. Don't kick yourself too much for falling off the wagon lately. The important part is getting back on. Atkins is a lifestyle choice -- and life has its ups and downs.

Welcome back to what works for you! And next time you find yourself tempted, spend a little time here instead of taking that first bite or drink. The support and encouragement here can make a huge difference -- they certainly have for me.

      Best of luck!
