  • "Deja vu, all over again..."

Good morning. Well, here I am. The summer before last I lost 40 lbs. doing a self-styled lowcarb thing. But there were a couple of things I didn't do right and so, ultimately I gained it all back. My main mistake, I believe, was that I became too restrictive, and there was no way that could have been sustainable. My challenge is not to take anything to the extreme. I believe I stayed on Induction too long and ended up getting angry at having to eat like that to keep losing. Like I said, something wasn't right.

The challenge for me is that I eat all the "right" things but not in moderation.

Anyhow, my kid's howling. I'll be back later....

    Back again...

So, I recently read Gary Taubes' new book "Good Calories/Bad Calories". My hubby (an MD) is also reading and it's making a lot of sense to him. It's really an amazing book, and I wholeheartedly recommend it as required reading for anyone who's interested in how metabolism works, and how culture and politics get in the way of individuals' best intentions to live a healthful life.

It's certainly helped me with my decision to re-start Atkins, and this time, to make it work.

Looking forward to getting to know all of you,

    Patty

Hi almondina! Welcome to ADBB! You got it, by george you've got it! The mistakes you made are all too common. Plenty of us stay in induction too long. We get comfortable there. But the reality is that our bodies need other foods and nutrients. Once you start bumping up the rungs, the menu choices become indefinite. And, you can move up the rungs and still lose weight. That much is true!

Be sure to look at all the great things the board has to offer. Come join a challenge, get active. You'll be glad you did.

            Hi Almondina, and welcome

I'm delighted to hear your husband is reading Taubes book - isn't it stunning? I wish, really wish, more doctors would read it. I sometimes feel like buying up a load of copies and posting them out to doctors and some of the people who control public health policies.

Particularly the doc who greeted my partners announcement that he was still doing Atkins with a frosty disapproving silence and the terse comment "I can't stand at your table to prevent you if you really must continue".

This in spite of the fact that the same doc had moments earlier told him he didn't need his diabetes meds anymore and that he was cutting back his BP and other heart meds because his lab results were so much better. Of course that was just coincidence - nothing at all to do with eating this way!
