  • Starting Over Again

    Hello,

My name is Paul. I am 5'7" 185# and 52 years old. I am starting on Atkins again. A few years ago I did atkins and lost weight from approx: 185 down to under 160. I looked good under 160 and my pants size went from a 38" down to a 34" and I could begin wearing Medium Shirts instead of Large. I also was quite muscular because I had been using Heavyhands walking and dancing as my excercise, along with Kettlebells.

When I did Atkins last time, I was not drinking alcohol at all. On one work trip I broke down and had a few drinks. Soon after that I began gaining weight again. Before I gained too much weight, I had my life insurance company redo my policy. I got a much lower rate. They sent someone over to weigh me and take blood tests. They told me that my good cholesterol was the best they had ever seen on anyone. It was 99. My bad cholesterol was slightly elevated but my good cholesterol more than made up for the bad. So they gave me the lowest possible insurance rate, the one reserved for the people in the best shape.

Over the years, I slacked on Atkins and also have been drinking some and my weight is back up to 185. I think its pretty hard for me to lose weight on atkins because I go into ketosis so easily, my body seems to maintain its weight in ketosis unless I excercise a lot.

One of the issues I have with excercise is I get hip pain sometimes. Another issue is I get lazy.

So now I am back to Atkins and I just wanted to say that I have proof that while eating Steak and Eggs my cholesterol was about as good as it gets.

    Thanks,

    Paul

    Re: Starting Over Again

Hi Paul - Welcome... I too am a slacker & restarting my committment to Atkins (alcohol and bad foods will get you everytime won't it?) You know that you can succeed with this way of life as you did it before. Try to find some exercises that least impact your hips --- I am sure someone on this forum can come up with ideas for you.

    Take care

Yes Thanks! I don't have many during the day but always have broccoli at night. Way back when I was in the Navy, I became fat when I was in the Navy School for a couple years, and then stayed that way for a while on the submarine. I got sick of it and this was in the seventies before I heard of Atkins, but what I did was nearly stopped eating for a couple months save for eating canned spinach and eggs once in a while. I also did chinups, pushups and situps every hour while on watch. I lost a real lot of weight in two months under water on the sub like that. I got down to under 140 and had a 29" waist (its 38 now). After that, when we came back home, I immediately took up running and other excercises. The canned spinach worked. I don't usually have veggies at breakfast or lunch, but you know it might not hurt to start that canned spinach again. Then I will be in shape to do the hokie pokie more LOL.
