  • Please Help Me!!

    Hi everyone,
I need all the help I can get. I am 5'8" and weigh 264 lbs. My Hubby is 6' and weighs 260. We have a bet going on who can lose the most body fat percent in the next 6 months. The winner will get $5,000 to spend how ever they want. He is trying the low fat thing. He is a truck driver so he is not very active but he just joined Gold's Gym with his brother because he can stop at any one accross the country. We live in a pretty rural area and I do not have that option. I also stay home with our three kids. He also obviously has the support of his brother and my family lives all over the country. I am doing Low Carb and I will go to the local High School Pool three days a week. Basically I am on here needing a real support system. I am not going to lie it has been hard this evening. I want some junk food so bad. I am trying really hard to not think about it though. I may just go and take a shower and go to bed. I took some before pics and I may dare to put them on later. Anyways good luck to all of you. And Congrats to all the before and after pics I saw that made me decide to join here.
    Anne

    Re: Please Help Me!!

    Hello Anne,

Welcome to ...Be strong...if you can make it those first few days...I promise it gets easier. Remember to drink lots of water, also avoid that caffeine...the caffeine makes you have cravings (I think)...also make sure your taking your supplements, that'll help too. Lastly...I too like something "sweet tasting" at night...so my snack is an atkins bfast bar...the peanut butter or choc chip ones are really good, and a choc atkins shake. It really cures that sweet tooth for me.

Good luck to you...you can do it!
Just think of all the new clothes you can buy with that 5 thousand...cause in 6 monthes your gonna need em!

junk food vs. $5,000...... hmmm.... that's a tough one. NOT! if that isn't incentive i don't know what is! plus you get the bragging righst

get a copy of the book, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002 edition (that's what we use here) and get started on the induction phase of Atkins. with exercise, the plan and your supplements (known as the triad) i have no doubt who will win the bet.

so what will you be buying with your cash award?

        Re: Please Help Me!!

I have not decided for sure what I will spend it on. I want to do some basic things in the house like painting and some new bedding and stuff. No major remodeling but minor stuff. But then I also really want to get Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and start my own hobby breeding. I really want to have another baby but I can't and I really want something to take care of. My motherly instincts are being affected by youngest starting school. I don't know I think I really need to think about it more.

          Welcome aboard Anne!
How lovely to want to breed dogs! I'd love to do that, too. Those Spaniels will ease your "motherly" instincts and be great fun for your child too.

I have to caution you about using the Atkins bars and shakes, as was suggested (no offence, JM). They are not induction legal (whatever the label and the Atkins website says) and have been known to cause many people to stall. Atkins Nutritionals are a business, and out to make a buck over and above concern for your weightloss... so they slip the bars in there, to the detriment of Atkineers all over.
Dr A used to advocate the bars for emergencies only, particularly at the early phases of this way of eating.

Ask questions and post lots. We're with ya!

Really sally? Do you think that atkins nutritionals would do that? God I hope not... I figured since they have the atkins name on them, they must be ok. I have been eating them all week (they say bfast bars - and Im not a big bfast eater, so a few times this week Ive had them for bfast, and at night for a snack too sometimes... I guess I'll see tues when I get on the scale.

**Has anyone else had any problems with the bars or shakes stalling their weightloss...I'd love to hear from you.

            Thanks

Sorry to be the breaker of bad news Jammiemarie but yes, these products are well known stallers. You'll find lots of posts about them dotted around the board and people who have been doing Atkins for a long time steer well clear of them... at least until maintenance.

                  Welcome akwebb3!

You've come to the right place for support...ADBB is wonderful. You'll find lots of knowledge here along with encouragement, friendship & humor.

First thing to do is get a copy of the book as Jimmie started. Read it from cover to cover. Highlight it & keep it handy for referral.

Come here frequently to post, ask questions, read what is going on with others. Start a journal, join a challenge or two...if you feel like eating some junk food just get on the computer!!

Also I would recommend taking your measurements today & keep track of the inches you lose in addition to your weight!

Good for you going to the pool!! Walk on the track at the school also. Check out some exercise videos also. Even though you don't have access to a gym there are lots of things you can do for your exercise!!

                  Good luck & welcome!!

                      Re: Please Help Me!!

As Sally said, avoid the shakes and bars like the plague. They're low carb junk food and there's no such thing as a mythical magical carb that doesn't count (sugar alcohols *do* affect blood sugar and they *do* have calories).

I'd also suggest heading to the library for some workout videos and investing a small amount in a set of 3/5/8lb dumbbells. You will see HUGE improvements in your body if you do a combination of weight training and aerobics. There's no substitute for it. If your library is online, log on and see what they have for exercise DVDs. That way you can give a variety of things a shot without having to spend any money. I know it made my life lots easier when I was home with my 3 kids!

I won't wish you luck because luck has squat to do with it. I'll wish you success!

Welcome to the board Anne. You've made a wise decision posting to this board. It's the most wonderful support system there is. The rest is up to you, but I know you can do it!

                          Re: Please Help Me!!

Most of this is is your mindset. You have to commit 100% - nothing less will do. Everyone slips up now and then so don't get discouraged. As previously stated, just get through the first few days and the cravings will go away. It'll be hard with little ones around because they won't eat the same as you. Fill up on the free foods. Take walks with your kids and enjoy your time while the pounds just drop off. Before you know it, you'll reach your goal. I'm a second timer and doing just great. I haven't cheated once yet and down 6.5 pounds in 14 days. It's not coming off as easily but it IS working. If you have a pedometer, use it. Set a goal on your steps per day and increase it often. You'll be walking miles before you know it too!

Atkins is a lifesytle change. You'll be so pumped when you see results. It's also important to keep a journal. Seeing what you eat it in print makes a difference.

I just found this site recently myself and I am inspired by the stories. I know I"ll continue moving forward because of the support. $5,000 is quite the incentive! Picture yourself at your goal weight and keep that picture in your head. Every time you look at yourself in the mirror, try to visualize the "new" you. It'll work wonders. Remember to also reward yourself with mini victories. For instance, I had a goal for January that I met early. I'm beginning on February's goal now and will treat myself to a pedicure and new polish. Doesn't seem like much but it's nice to pamper yourself. I'll do more if I reach Feburary's goal early. 10-14 pounds a month is realistic if you stay on track. Just keep moving.

Believe in your self! This group already does! You already have your own personal cheerleaders! How great is that! Have a wonderful day and stay strong!
