  • Yep, I'm new!

    Hey guys!

My name is Sammy, I am 34, married to Bill. From the UK but living in Houston, Texas. I have 18yr and 14yr old girls, a 10 yr old boy and a huge shock of a 1yr old baby! Previous to the surprise pregnany I trained horses and police/security dogs.

I have always been the slim one in my family... until I got pregnant with the baby. Oh.My.Gosh! Pregnancy combined with my very, um, generous eating habits while pregnant brought me to the heaviest I have ever been.

At the moment I am 175lb, the same weight as I was the day after my baby was born! I normally sit at around 130lbs, so in essence I have a whopping 50lb to shed.

I did a psuedo Atkins a few years ago and it worked great. I know I am going to struggle this time as all I do is sit on my arse at home with the baby all day, looking lovingly at the fridge and the food cupboards! I also have the nasty nighttime habit of ice-cream and TV when the kids are in bed!

Anyhoo, I started yesterday, doing ok so far, struggling with finding things to eat but I will get there. I have a very stressful interview coming up Friday (my Greencard interview with INS.. after nearly 10 yrs!) so I really am tempted to stress eat, eat to forgot, eat to pass time LOL!!! ARGH!!!

Y'all are a wonderful motivation! Thank you!

    Re: Yep, I'm new!

    Hi Sammy -

WELCOME ABOARD!!! I, too, am new to this board ... just joined yesterday but am AMAZED at the support out there! This is a GREAT place to get inspiration, ideas and ENCOURAGEMENT! I think we are doing ourselves a HUGE favor by signing on to this bulletin board ... MUCH more supportive than WW meetings or whatever!

We raise horses (Paints and Quarters), so I perked up when I read that you trained horses prior to "surprise baby". By the way, I'm sure your baby is the "apple of your eye" and MUCH loved even though it was a 'surprise'! I also have an ENORMOUS, HEARTFELT LOVE for dogs (ANY kind of animal really!) and grew up with German Shephards, which is likely the breed you train for security animals.

Want to wish you the BEST of luck in your weight loss journey ... I KNOW we can do this ... we just have to WANT it enough to make it happen!!!

Also, BEST of luck with your interview on Friday! I have met several people through the years that have gone through the same thing ... and it has ALWAYS turned out JUST FINE ... so go there with CONFIDENCE and DAZZLE 'EM!!!

      Re: Yep, I'm new!

Thanks for the post, made me feel welcome! Looks like we have the same amount to lose more or less too!

Yep, the horses, I miss them I really do. I did not find out I was pregnant for over 3 mths so spent that whole time jumping and working horses all day, needless to say once I found out I had to quit my job, but was followed a few months later by selling my own 2 horses (QH and TB). I do miss it a lot. BUT, the baby was worth it. I am enjoying it this time whereas when I was younger with my babies I was constantly stressed!

Yep, German Shepherds and Malinois (Belgian Shepherds).

I'll be watching your progress ... keep an eye on mine too ... I need to be "accountable" to stay in line, though I am HIGHLY motivated to get this weight 'headed south'!

I had never heard of Malinois before, so had to Goggle them ... they are QUITE similar-looking to German Shephards, aren't they?! I found some pictures on there of Malinois puppies and boy are they CUTE!

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK and stay on track ... we ARE going to SUCCEED!!!

            Hi -

We do ... LOTS of 'em! I keep threatening my hubby that I'm gonna open the gates and let 'em all run away!!! (LOTS of work ... NOT that I don't LOVE 'em, we just have SO many and they are TRULY a BUNCH of work!).

By the way, CONGRATS on your weight loss!!! HOPEFULLY I will get there soon too!

              Re: Yep, I'm new!

IMO, Malinois (and the other Belgians) are pretty different from German ShephErd Dogs, at least in person. They move differently, they seem to be a little edgier (sharper). I often think of them as more on the Border Collie end of the herding group - incredibly intense and focused.

I'd love to have a good Mal or Terv.

Sammy, welcome! And grats on the upcoming INS interview. Like other folks have said, read the book. I find that when I wander into the kitchen looking for something to chow down on, I can handle it by drinking a big glass of water.

You might consider making new 'rules' for yourself, like not eating in front of the tv or something. Change your habits. For me, it's awfully easy to eat a week's worth of food if I'm doing something else (movie or computer) and not paying attention to what I'm eating.
