  • Insulin resistant - carbs are my enemy!

    Hi everyone.

I honestly hate the Atkins diet! LOL I've tried it before and failed miserably but after years of health woes, my DR finally determined I'm "insulin resistant" - which is basically pre-diabetic. When I eat carbs/sugar, my body doesn't produce enough insulin to deal with the glucose and it doesn't get processed/disposed of properly. It makes me fat, among other bad things it's doing to my body.

Soooo... here I am trying to figure out what sorts of things a person who can't have carbs is supposed to eat! I'm a bona-fide carb addict so I need lots of help and suggestions!

Nice to meet everyone! Happy dieting!

Welcome! What's to hate about Atkins??? I have been doing it for over two years, and find more to love every day. First, work on your attitude, because you can't be successful about anything you are already convinced you hate. Second--it's not a diet--it's a way of life. Embrace it. Be positive about it. Read the book, so you don't think Induction is all there is to this WOE (or that it is the egg, steak and cheese diet). It's only the first two weeks, then on to the most decadent and delicious food you have ever tasted. The first 14 days, you break bad habits and tame the cravings and by then, you will be ready to eat healthy.

      Hi Sunny,

Well, I shouldn't say I hate Atkins I guess... I should say that I LOVE carbs. I have read the book a long time ago but I guess I could refresh my memory. I'm struggling now with not knowing what to eat. I need ideas.

I definitely realize it's not a diet. For me especially, it has to be a lifestyle change. It's a lifestyle change I don't particularly want to make but at this point, I have no choice (Dr's orders!)

Thanks for your advice and nice to meet you.

You really do need to read the book again and keep it handy if you are to make the lifestyle change. I have several copies (different editions) and I have to refer to it many times a week. The people that are successful don't count on memory or worse yet, someone else's memory, about how to do Atkins right.

The recipe forum at this site and several low carb recipe sites like Linda's http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/recipes.html are a wealth of great tasting dishes. Just this morning, I had Zucchini Bread pancakes with bacon for a delicious breakfast. You could even have this on induction if you left out the toasted pecans. I love to cook, so I have been creating low carb recipes for a while, and there is not much that you can't make low carb and healthy.

Coming here, making friends, joining challenges and participating is the best tool you can have to make this a WOL.

You need to look at the induction list and for the first 2 weeks eat only whats on that list...after that walk the perimeter of the grocery store, (deli, veggies, meats, etc) and read labels and see wht all you CAN have...you've got to get creative, and read a lot of labels...my first trip to the store felt like I was there for hours.

A couple of my favorites are homemade ckn salad (with a rotisserie ckn, mayo, celery)
steak, broccoli, mashed cauliflower with butter & cz, ckn wings (un breaded of course), dbl stack from wendys, celery w/cream cz.
Basically we love any kind of meat w/ a green veg!

But like the others said re-read the book & get yourself re-familiarized!

          I wish you the best.

ps...theres also a recipe section on here...lots of great ideas there...or what I did in the beginning was to look in the online journals at what others were eating.

Welcome! What kind of carbs are you addicted to?? There are many, many great alternatives to some of the bad type carbs (faux potatoes, desserts, snacks, etc).. You just need to do a little research. I agree with Sunny - you have to change your mindset about hating Atkins or you will be bound to fail --- and we want you to be a LOSER!! (Loser of weight that is!)

            Good luck

Re: Insulin resistant - carbs are my enemy!

You are extremely lucky to have a supportive doctor who told you to do Atkins. There are many pre-diabetic/insulin resistant people who are warned against it, but whose research leads them to it anyway, and who have to do it in spite of the dire predictions of their doctors.

I agree with the others, you need to get over the idea that Atkins is some sort of trial or punishment or involves deprivation. If you don't, you'll fail. You have been given the gift of the key to good health, embrace it, give thanks for it and get into it completely.
