  • Well....Here goes

    Hello everyone.

My name is Kevin, so don't mind the nickname. It's a chat name I've had for almost a decade.

I started the Atkins (really I'm on more of a low/no carb diet) diet Monday, Feb. 25th. I'm *GUESSING* I've lost somewhere near 17 lbs. since I started, since I don't know my exact start weight. I guessed it at 425 because my scale wouldn't read it until yesterday evening when it said 402. It's fluctuating, and I've checked it 3 or 4 times for an avg, since it first read for me. The weight I'm going with now seems to be 407. I was extremely happy when the scale read, because it's quite depressing when a 400lb. scale won't post your weight.

About me...hmmm. I'm 39 for a few more months. I'm currently disabled, due to both my weight and back issues. I am doing this diet because my fiancee has inspired me to lose weight with her. I did Atkins/Scarborough previously, about 9 yrs ago, while in a previous marriage. I lost about 40lbs. in the first month, then quit, due to money/time/depression issues. Looking back on it, I just gave up on myself. No more excuses this time. I've got 3 children of my own. 2 from my previous marriage, and a 5 mo. old from my current fiancee. She also has 2 kids of her own, so I'm a stay at home dad of 5, all but one live with us, and luckily all are in school during the day except for Aidan, the baby.

So far, the diet seems semi-easy. Menu choices aren't plentiful just yet. I'm sort of lazy about looking for new recipes, and I don't eat fish, so it's kind of limited. Oh! Also, I'm not the only person doing the diet. My fiancee and all the kids are, too. She started at 224 and she's at 217 now. My son and daughter are both over weight. They're 12 and 11. Right now, since they eat 2 meals at school, their diet is severely modified. Once summer hits, though, they're both going on Atkins hardcore, of their own volition.
Well, that's about it for now. I've been checking out the board for a few days. It's very inspiring. It's nice to know that regardless one's issues now days, you can find a support group uusually online for it.
I look forward to your replies and responses.

    Peace~
    Kevin

Hi Kevin - actually I was rolling when I read your name - that's pretty funny . Good luck - just remember this is a way of life - not a "diet" and really if you think about it ~ living this lifestyle is not any more expensive that what you normally would have spent on food - considering you probably eat out alot... The only difference is that we cook our own meals (prepackaged foods can have lots of sugar, etc) and it is imporatant to prepare in advance.

Also I DONT do fish either (allergic to shellfish & dislike fish in general) TRUST ME... there are plenty of menu ideas out there [One of the major reasons I LOVE Atkins]. Go to Lindas lowcarb recipe site and just look around.

Make sure to get online and post often and ask questions if you aren't sure!!

Good luck on your weight loss journey!

      Thanks for the hasty reply.

I agree, it's a lifestyle change/choice and not really a diet. I love most of the food I'm eating and don't crave too much.

It sure is funny that eating unhealthy costs about 2 to 4 times less than eating right. In just the last week and a half I've spent over 300 on food, but my fiancee and I both agree it's well worth it. Once we're out of induction and more stable with menu choices, it should drop quite a bit.

A lot of the recipes I make are my own. I do 95% of the cooking here, and I like to dabble with it, so I do my own thing. I made some great turnip french fries, and rocking cauliflower casserole, and a few other dishes. Even our kids loved most of the stuff. I'm sure with time, effort, and some web searching, I'll have a complete and varied menu planned out. Sadly, I'm OCD, and a list maker. So I like having a menu list at the least a week in advance. LOL Eh...I'll deal, though.
If there was a Laziness Union, I'd be their Jimmy Hoffa.
