I am trying Atkins again because I want to break my emotional addiction to food, and because I am planning to get pregnant soon and am committed to losing weight first. I am 28 years old, 5'2' and 159 lbs. I have pretty much been on and off diets since I was 12 years old. I have probably gained and lost my body weight over that time. I am tired of feeling like food has control over me and that I have no control over food. In the past, when I have done Atkins, I have never done it correctly. For the last week I have done what I think is a clean Induction, but I weighed myself this morning and I've only lost one pound. I'm really discouraged. I know that seeing results quickly is vital for me -- otherwise I tend to give up. That's why I turned to Atkins again.

Atkins is the PERFECT way to gain control over food! When adhered to correctly, your appetite will decrease and cravings will diminish.

Flaquita, I cannot stress enough the importance of following Atkins to the letter. As you can see from my stats, I am a second-timer to the Atkins WOE. The difference between the first time, and this time, is that this time I followed the plan exactly. Sure, I lost weight my first time around... but I never reached goal, and I never acquired the skills needed to maintain for life. This time, I did it right... achieved a weight under my goal weight, and feel like I can do this for the rest of my life. The book that we follow here is the 2002 version of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. (DANDR for short) It was the last one written by the good doctor himself. I have read a couple of the books put out since his death and there are some fundamental differences.

Another tip that I would like to offer - I would suggest waiting the full 2 weeks before you weigh. You have thrown your body a curve ball by starting this way of eating, and it is likely confused right now... you can't trust the scale this early in the game (and sometimes later in the game, too). Once the 2 weeks is over, your body should be more in the groove. Once Induction is over, there are many people who weigh everyday. Personally, I weigh once a week. There's just the potential for too many head games if I do it more often. Having said that, there are many who can handle that and don't get discouraged by the daily fluctuations. As long as you realize that the scale DOES NOT tell the whole story, you can weigh as often as you like after Induction... keep in mind, though, that your body weight can fluctuate greatly for many reasons. Just don't let it get to you!

Here are a few links to get you started. The first one is to a website that many of us use for recipes. The rest are places around the board that may be of interest to you. Good luck!

      Hey mitzimarie,
Thanks for the great advice! I think I definitely have to break the scale-mood connection. I actually weighed myself a little later on and found I'd gone done a pound more... further proof that the scale is not a reliable gauge at this point. I also have definitely got to get the book. I've been going off the Atkins website, which is not as comprehensive. Thanks also for the links, it's so nice to get a response and some encouragement.

DON'T GIVE UP!! List what you've been eating and one of the seasoned Atkineers can tell you if it's okay. And like they always say--GET THE BOOK, READ THE BOOK. This plan really works, so please hang in there.
