  • Introducing myself -advice needed

I'm new to the forum but not completely new to Atkins. I tried it 8 years ago and lost about 10kg, but regained it again because I didn't really take the time to read up properly and so didn't know enough to quell my doubts about the diet long term. Since then I started to have health problems. 3 years ago I was diagnosed with 'metabolic syndrome', once I scraped up enough courage to see a doctor. My insulin and blood pressure was sky high, and I had digestive problems caused by candida albicans. I suspect this was in part caused by having to take many antibiotics due to implants I had done on my teeth. I had never heard of metabolic syndrome, but it made sense to me seeing that I was overweight even as a child not like my twin sister(non-identical) who ate the same food and didn't put on weight. I develop PCOS(polycystic ovarian syndrome) which apparantly is linked to metabolic syndrome. I have only been a 'normal weight' once in my life - for 4 months when I was 17. I was told then that I was 'pre diabetic' but didn't really pay much attention to that. Anyway, the good news it that through treatment, I got rid of my candida and parasites in my digestive system and was given to the go-ahead by my doctor to start trying to lose weight in December 2007. He suggest Atkins as he says it's good for O blood types. In February 2008 I went back to him to be weighed and I had only lost 2kgs! The good news, was my blood test results; Hormones(as in premenopause), cholesterol, HDL levels, uric acid, Thyroid, all had gone down to normal levels, all except my insulin levels! I bought a glucometer to monitor my insulin levels as well. I took a closer look at what I was doing, and realised that I was eating the right foods, but I was not accurate in my carb counting. So I started a CLEAN INDUCTION on the 24th February, paying close attention to everything.
I have been walking for an hour 3-4x a week, drinking enough water, eating enough vegetables, etc. My ketoxtix are purple every day. I feel very good, glowing skin, energy, feel satisfied etc. BUT I don't feel any thinner. I don't really rely on my scales as they differ from the doctor's scales, instead I'm measuring, but there seems to be little change. According to my glucometer, the normal level for my glucose levels should be under 5.9. I test myself 2 hours after eating. The levels vacillate between 7 and 5.8. Can I use this as a tool the same as ketostix?

    QUESTIONS:
    1. How long should it take for my glucose levels to stabilize?
    2. Do I consider myself to be in the metabolic resistance category - should I do the fat fast diet of 1000 calories a day or move on to OWL?
    3. Should I first try to cut back on cheese/cream (I do so love my 3 caffeine coffees with cream)
    4. Is maltodextrin ok to use a sweetener?
    5. Any suggestions on how I'm going to count carbs when I go to Japan for 2 weeks in April? We will be hosted by friends, and will go to restaurants.
I would appreciate any words of encouragement/advice.

    First off, welcome to scintilla!

Glad to have you with us and I hope I can be of some small assistance. I won't try to answer question #1 as I am not sure so hopefully someone will come along with an answer for that. As for your other questions...

    2) Absolutely not. You can only even begin to think about fat fast if you've had a clean induction and lost absolutely nothing and based on question 3 it's clear your induction hasn't been completely clean...which leads to the next question...

    3) Coffee is a known staller. If you find yourself not losing this could very well be why. Also, how much cheese and cream are you eating? You are only allowed 4oz of cheese and 3 tablespoons of cream daily. Also keep in mind there are carbs in these foods and you must count them toward your daily total. If you are exceeding these amounts then you aren't following induction in this area either.

    4) As far as malodextrin is concerned...it's normally a bulking agent for artificial sweetners like Splenda. Splenda is allowable, but only three servings per day and you must count 1 carb per serving. If you can't get Splenda, any sweetner with saccharin is also allowed and some here even use Stevia with success.

    5) Just because the restaurants serve high carb foods does not mean you have to order them or eat them if they come with your meal. Just eat the things that are allowable on your current phase of Atkins and forego the rest. If you are comfortable discussing Atkins with others, you might discuss your diet restrictions with your hosts and see if they will accomodate. I'm pretty sure even the items on the restrictive induction list are available in all developed countries.

Hope this helps and wish you the best of luck on your weight loss journey!

          Dear Jace
Thankyou for the quick response. I am impressed by your achievement in losing weight.
I can see now what I've been doing wrong. I've miscalculated the serving size of cream. We use grams here and sometimes I get the gram/oz measurements confused. With regards to maltodextrin, all you have said is that it is used as a filler for splenda.... but is it still 'non regime' for the diet. The labelling says 0.99 carbs per gram.(the product is called 'Advantage I really dislike the taste of stevia. It contains Acesulfame-K and non-nutritive sweetener(no aspartame, I haven't seen Splenda in our local shops. What do you think about this report about Splenda? http://splenda.worldwidewarning.net/www/about/

Seeing as how malodextrin is used in Splenda and Splenda is allowed there's probably nothing wrong with Malodextrin itself, it just depends on the type of sweetener it's being used in. Let's not forget that artificial sweeteners are just that...artificial so there's always a chance that even the allowable ones could stall weightloss or cause cravings. Sweeteners are another thing one may consider cutting if they find themselves not losing weight.

My personal feeling is use any sweetener you're comfortable with, but always at your own risk as Sucralose and Saccharin based ones are the only ones endorsed by Dr. Atkins and not everyone can successfully use them either. Pay close attention to how your body reacts to them after use and respond accordingly.

As for the article...I take most of what people say about Splenda with a grain of salt as there are just as many people on the "there's nothing wrong with Splenda" side as there are on the "It's bad for you" side. I'm no scientist so I really can't say for sure where the truth lies (and it seems most scientists can't agree either).

              All the best,
